Just shows how important winning is. I guess the days of scheduling tough non conference games are over unless you’re just wanting to be battle tested.

I totally agree. It’s bad enough that the NCHSAA allows private and charters to play against traditional programs….that built up their programs. The playing field is simply unfair and not on an even basis for traditional public schools to be limited to kids from their districts, while private and charters are allowed to accept recruited and transfer players that are sucked away from the school they probably should be playing for. The rules should apply to all, or either create a division for all private, charter schools.

It is unfortunate that there are no allowances or points given toward programs that play tougher schedules. At least in the MVAC, East Wilkes has played against 3A Mt Airy, 4A Hibriten, and 6A North Iredell; Starmount has played against 3A Mt Airy, 3A East Surry, and 4A Forbush. And Starmount has always tended to play up in classification……years past the Rams have played against West Forsyth, Davie County, (pre-Draughn) East Burke (all 4A at the time) and North Iredell. Tarboro just played Wilson Hunt.

My biggest issue with NCHSAA’s rules is allowing private/charter schools to compete evenly against traditional public schools that cannot recruit or accept transfers immediately without a waiting period.

Winning should always be the most important part of the formula. Somewhere we have devalued winning the games in front of you for strength of schedule. A school like East Wilkes will be ok RPI wise as the season goes on. They are going to win games and they played 2 tough opponents that are going to win games which will help them.

I agree winning should be your ultimate goal. I look at non conference games two ways. You’re either wanting to be battle tested against good teams and lose which hurts you in RPI, or your focused solely on a good RPI and playing non conference teams you know you can beat.

I’m sure there is multiple examples out there but for EW last year, lost to mt airy and hibriten which are higher classification teams and are good candidates for being battle tested. The other loss coming to starmount which made them 7-3. Alleghany played weaker non conference teams and only lost 2 games ( one by EW) and still being higher in RPI at seasons end.

That’s all I meant by the winning games comment.

Im not one to complain about the rpi method just expressing how coaches can have different views when picking their non conference games. Are you focused on being battle tested or are you more concerned with beating teams you know you can for RPI sake?

Was thinking the same thing. They've beat Salisbury who is one of the worst teams in the state, and LNC who will be .500 at best. Lost to West Rowan who is another .500 team at best. North could win their conference but I doubt they'll have close to anything for North Stanly.

The west is going to be a 3 maybe 4 horse race and North Rowan isn't in the conversation.

Well let’s start with Mitchell Cherokee Allegany the west is more than just a 4 team race. Doing some research North Rowan is 1-1 vs Corvian all time and West Rowan who they lost too just beat Walkertown and from what i understand North fumbled inside the 10 yd line 3 times. Mitchell could find their way in the conversation and could be in that 4 team convo. I like Alleghany but don't think they'll have enough ponies to keep up coming down the stretch. Cherokee isn't in the conversation right now.

I've wondered the same thing.

I think the district rebuilding Knox Middle hasn't helped them. All those kids were shipped off to other middle schools for the years of construction so they haven't had a true feeder program for the last few years. So my guess is they have alot of kids that are playing now that didn't play in middle school. I don't know how the programs are at the other middle schools and not sure what all other middle schools they went to. I just had heard this year that Knox reopened and knew that was their main middle school.

Yes even with a loss I think tonight proves Edenton is going to be a major contender in the 2A east.

When I looked at alleghany roster they had a lot of juniors. I expect them to be a major major contender next year potentially.

I'm not sure just looking at the scores right now Hendersonville looks like the team to beat. It could have been just a bad first game but Mitchell's lost to Charlotte Latin 27-18 who's lost their last two games 42-20 & 58-35 concerns me.

Look who charlotte latin is playing. Hendo could barley beat bad north henderson team without their stud runningback and wr playing freshman QB.

Well all I know is Corvian and Starmount plays a weaker schedule than most!

Corvian has the highest SOS currently in 2A and Starmounts is far from weak with several tough matchups left.

Starmount's conference is one of the toughest in 2A, 3 of the top 10 teams in 2A. Not to mention playing Mt Airy, East Surry and Wilkes Central. It's not like it was a few years ago. Any given Friday they could be beat.

I'd say right here right now, corvian and starmount are the two teams to beat in the west. I am curious to see if Clem can play the remainder of the season for Murphy. With him in the lineup I believe they are definitely a contender. CSOD is also one to keep a eye on. Last year they gave corvian a heck of a game.
