Thoughts on Sellers play? Concern that he didn't run? Missed on 4 passes?

I was pretty encouraged from Sellers play yesterday (yes, of course, we know the level of competition, blah blah). He hung in the pocket and delivered passes, which many of our fans were saying he couldn't do.

It's funny, some who were saying he was too run happy are now criticizing him for not running yesterday. I'd be curious to know if that was by design by Briles. Not sure if he was trying to prove point that the offense could function without Sellers running.

I've seen him also getting some heat for underthrowing some open receivers, but he completed 83% of his passes including some deep dimes, so it seems like quibbling. If the standard is 100% completion, then he's doomed.

There was nothing that stood out to me as a major red flag going forward. The competition gets much tougher in a couple weeks, but we'll see then, but just based on this performance, I don't really know what more we could have wanted.

I know our OL wasn't really tested yesterday, so we'll see what happens when he gets some real pressure.

Good assessment. I was fine with him not running yesterday. Was only disappointed in him missing the crosser to Bennett on the 1st drive. That could have been a TD. However, as you said, no QB has ever been perfect. Didn't need his legs to beat that team. Work on getting better in the pocket until your legs may be needed two weeks from now.

True, it wasn't necessary and would have opened him up to injury. Also, if thinking strategy, it might make future defenses re-think how they have to defend him. The book on Sellers is that he's run first, second and third and not really much of a threat with the pass. It's the smallest sample size, but I think opposing defenses would at least have to consider his passing ability. Will just have to see how he does against better defenses.

He played well. Cant complain about the stat line and was taking shots. The sack or two he took surfaced some bad memories for me. The couple bad throws were just sort of head scratchers. He can throw it fifty yards then under throws a guy twenty yards downfield. I think he’ll be fine passing. I’ve always felt like he needs to be getting 5-10 designed runs a game and should take off and run if it’s there. With Harbor on the outside needing to be accounted for and a few solid backs, throw a 6’3” 240 pounds runner into the equation and there’s a lot for a defense to keep an eye on. Fine with him not running against Kent state though.

Too soon. Numbers were good. The misses weren't good, but everybody misses some.

Positives:
Good numbers
Looked comfortable
Most passes were accurate
Deep balls had nice touch.
He didn't have to run, and didn't appear to have "happy feet."

Cons:
The misses were bad misses.
He appeared to stare down his receivers. I only saw him go through a progression once.
Was the ball coming out quick enough? I'm unsure.

Overall: we gotta be happy with that. The future will tell.

He played well.

He still tries to "arm" the ball too much instead of stepping into throws- which always hurts his accuracy. I was only concerned in that he did it a couple times when he had time to step into the pass a bit. HIs form gets off a bit too much for me. Doesn't hurt him against teams like Kent.

had nice zip on the ball.

but he protected the ball good enough and that's a big part of the job.

Good read.

I'd have been concerned if he had been running around. 1) He didn't need to. 2) No really, he didn't need to against Kent St..... and I'm 100% positive he was told that, firmly, multiple times.

I'm not really bothered by the incomplete passes either. - First game jitters, new coaching staff, new OL, etc.

I think the speed at which he made decisions shows he's moved in from the crap show that was last season. He was confident and comfortable, and was extremely accurate outside of those 4 passes where his mechanics just fell apart. For a guy who's game so clearly follows his confidence and comfort, I'm not bothered by a few sloppy passes coming back into things. He was top 10 on the week in raw QBR.

That ball was coming out pretty quick. He worked a lot of deep and intermediate routes and believe i heard he got them out in under 2.5 seconds. He averaged more than 3 last year, and threw late a lot last season. Everyone got the ball before coverage found them again.

He still was sacked a few times. Great athlete. Average QB at best. Beams is still the HC, which works against him.

I don't even like saying it because it was a spectacular performance by Sellers and all. He did stare down people a good bit. With that said, the silver lining is he has a rocket arm and can squeeze some passes in sometimes that I didn't think he could make.
All together though - gem of a day for him and the offense.

The touch on the out route to our sideline, where he threw it just hard enough to fit it in but soft enough to get over the LBs fingers and on the sideline where on our guy could get it. That was really encouraging!

His problem is the past was often throwing too high. His misses on Saturday were all short/too low. So, obviously they've corrected if not over corrected the problem.

It's very hard to take much from that game.
Depends on how you look at it. If we lost or won a close one, there'd a whole lot you can take from it.

That there were no major red flags at the very least shows improvement from last year when we got outgained in offensive yards by SC State.

The whole team did what it was supposed to do against an opponent like that. Good warmup/preseason/scrimmage type game.

Sellers looked as well prepared as I've seen him. Slimmed down a bit and quicker, confident and focused.
This is what I would expect being his third year and forgoing other options to return and lead the Gamecocks to his vision of what they can accomplish.

Yeah, he has had busy feet for years. Those feet were less chaotic this Saturday. He just looked like he was so much more comfortable. I’m not sure if it’s because he trusts the line more or because of the scheme. Time will tell.

I thought so as well; you used ‘comfortable’, I used ‘confident.’ My personal belief is the scheme; it looked to me like he believes in what’s going to happen pretty much every play, that the play will be successful. That was missing to my eyes last season.

It'll all shake out once we get to SEC play, but the offense just felt more settled on Saturday. It never could find a rhythm or identity last year, even against the likes of SC State.
