Haven’t looked at it real close, but if the ball crosses the out of bounds plane before the clock hits zero, there would have been time left. It isn’t when the ball hits the ground.

The player has to be out of bounds, the ball can cross the out of bounds plane and come back in over and over again and play continues. The only "plane" the ball crosses that stops play is the goal line.

Get a judge to issue a ruling game was over. Only thing is they probably have destroyed all the video evidence

I watched the play multiple times today and was able to freeze the video.

The game clock on tv reached 0.00 as the ball was - my estimate-3-4 feet from touching the Western Michigan player's outstretched hand(s). This was clear. I saw other people online posting the exact same screen shot that I was able to freeze myself when watching it. This would clearly have ended the game right there.

There is zero doubt the player had NOT touched the ball by the time game clock TV was showing reached 0.00. So per tv game clock, the game was over there.

Then I saw the booth replay version and that clearly showed the Western Michigan player touching the ball with 0.01 second left. That was also clear. The player had at least one foot out of bounds and had jumped up to try to catch or touch the ball and clearly touched it at 0.01.

I read that the tv time and the official game time were synched up and that had been verified. So how they were clearly different I do not understand. That's the issue.

But clearly, one of them was wrong- and clearly the replay booth is going to go by the time they show on their clock.

Thanks for the recap. It's not like the OP already posted an article explaining this, so you taking the time to recap is appreciated.

I love that one.

But as absolutley crummy as it is, no one will care in a week or two.
Maybe you are right about that. What would be payback is a scenario that at the end of season NCAA playoff committee has already picked 11 out of 12 teams for the playoffs and they have to decide between Michigan and one other team, and they pick the other team. Michigan will feel that pain like Norte Dame when they picked Miami over the Irish last season.

Absolutely horrible. No way do you put one sec back on the clock. Even the view they said was official "proof" wasn't clear when he actually touched the ball.

TV game clock view- ball almost in player's hands

1.jpeg

View showing player stepping out of bounds before he leaps to try to catch ball

2m.jpeg

Replay booth view- player catching ball- 0.01 seconds remaining. As soon as he touches the ball the clock is dead. By rule, he doesn't have to have caught the ball for the clock to stop since his left foot was already out of bounds when he jumped up

I don't buy all this "secret" official's clock that nobody else ever gets to see. "Just trust us"
The official clock is the stadium clock run by or supervised by an official, per the rules. The on field time keeper is for backup and timing errors. There was no claim of a timing error. If the stadium clock went to zero, the game is over.

If there is another clock, I'll be darned if I can find it in the rules. I think they're using these new "review" tools without considering they have gone beyond the rules. There is not supposed to be another clock.

I've always thought instant replay is garbage. Hate it.

This is just another reason why.

What do you think the odds are if the tables were reversed and it was WMU with the final Hail Mary that was incomplete that the refs would have reviewed to put a second back on the clock to give them a second chance?

That's why I wrote this above....

I don't pretend to know why there are two different times that need to be synched up or if I am using the right term by saying "tv time" - what I mean by that is the stadium clock. Apparently the stadium clock (used by tv) and the replay time are synced up. But clearly that wasn't true here.

I know an ACC official. If I see him this week, I will try to ask what he thinks about it.

This is Josh Pate's question for the BIG10 in his show on the subject in another post.

Anyone else attend the 86' NC State game? That game should have been over as well. Their clock manager stopped the clock when it should have run out. They get an extra pass because of a phantom PI. The ref had his flag ready to give them another try if they failed. That game was fixed!

Then on the do-over the receiver slung our db to the ground and caught the pass for the game winner. Ref right on top of it, hand on flag, left it pocketed and ran off the field. There'a still picture of it somewhere. Most egregious example of b;atant cheating I have ever seen. For those of you that chide when 'refs' are mentioned, no sorry; seen it too many times.

Big 10 being the Big 10.
Having Michigan not lose that game keeps the RPI/standings/ratings higher for Michigan which looks better when they play against other in conf. opponents as well as their end of year record for bowl purposes.
I have said for decades.....big10 is quietly the dirtiest conference around.....well, the ACC might say "hold my beer to that" considering UNC and Miami's infractions.

Nope.In that case a player could never catch a pass falling out bounds with his foot touching in bounds.
Math teacher must be a Michigan graduate.
