The 4th Quarter was shorten to 10 minutes. I'm okay with that today, but just wondering why? ****

It was incredibly hot.
“Africa Hot” for the movie fan.

If you were at the game I`m sure you would understand. I`m guessing both coaches had to agree. I was sitting in the shade the entire game and was still sweating.

What did 5 minutes accomplish though?

Just seems odd. Is this the norm, now? If you're getting your butt kicked and it's too hot or cold, you can just quit the game early?

Yeah, why not skip the entire 4th quarter? The game was clearly over by the end if the third. How does 5 minutes significantly mitigate the damage after having already suffered through it for nearly 3 hours?

Shortening any game by 5 minutes simply because of heat.... is a first for me. Never heard of that before. Seriously. Can't recall another game in CFB that has done that. I'm sure there are but it seems very , not professional.

Bottom line with the logic: - If you're REALLY that concerned about the "safety of the fans, players, coaches, etc" - then literally don't even bother to tie your cleats. Stay home. It's absurd.

I think back when the miserable *** Tar Heels would not call the game after like a two hour delay, to play the final couple minutes with SC well out in front. So I think it is at the discretion of the coaches. I am sure TV has a lot to say about it as well.

It must have been bad, it looked like maybe 300 fans were left in the stadium at the end of the game.

It's been 11 years since I've been to a game but where is the upper concourse?

The rule use to be both both ADs had to sign off on the agreement.

Me and my friends attended that game and when it started to rain hard we went to our car and listened to the remainder of the game on radio. I recall hearing the announcers say that both AD's had to sign off to the agreement. I could be wrong and it was the coaches.

Not sure, but we left the game, had hoped to beat traffic, but didn’t lol. Heard the game start back almost home in RH

I couldn't post the information from AI but it basely said the two ADs had to sign an agreement or two representives of the ADs from each school.

Lots of people passed out at the game yesterday due to the heat- including band members. A number transported to the hospital. I am sure security staff and even EMS was probably telling university officials they were being stretched way too thin. Those folks have to also think of the safety and health of their employees.

I am sure when they made the decision, shortening it by 5 mins of gametime was the amount of time that could be quickly agreed to by both teams and television.

and 5 mins of gametime probably shortened the game by 20 mins.

I do agree that a running clock would have also been fine but I am sure they just went with whatever they felt was best when they were discussing it with the teams.

Thats a great story.

None of that would gave mattered had it been a competitive game.

It's a new age move but I'm good with it. Heat Issues & Chance of Injuries in a irrelevant 5 minutes.

With the margin what it was, there was no compelling reason not to run the clock when the preponderance of fans had checked out. JMO

I still don't see the point of playing only 92% of the game. How many lives were saved by taking away those 5 minutes?

It would be like having an outside job with an 8 hour shift and the boss saying "Boys, this work conditions are unsafe. You only have to work 7 hours 21 minutes today."

I would think we had to get Kent State to go along with whatever was agreed upon. Maybe they proposed it. Maybe the referee proposed it. It's only a guess but this could have been a compromise between the two teams.

time and heat have a direct correlation on some level. The longer you are in it, the more hazardous it can be. I think cutting it 5 mins makes sense given those criteria and concerns. Cutting it 5 mins likely could have cut the total game time by 20 mins or so.

I have heard of work cycles were working outdoors in the heat they would have a rule according to maybe by the temperature and humidity they would work for 45 minutes and take a 15-minute break or work for 30 minutes and take a break for 30 minutes or work for 15 minutes and take a 45-minute break.

5 whole minutes of safety.
I've seen HS games called at halftime due to heat/one of the teams sucked. So I have no problem with it. It allows time to get your backup players some run while just getting the game over with. Sort of like a baseball game that gets called due to rain after the 5th inning and the leader gets the win. This game was over at halftime. So, calling it any point after that was understandable.

But this isn't high school.

Americans kind of scoffed at the WC needing hydration breaks this year b/c Americans are tough and wouldn't need such things.

Guess we aren't so tough after all.

I've also seen running 4th Quarter clocks at the College Level. Cutting 5 Minutes is a similar concept to the running clock. Takes roughly one possession away from each team. So, you wanted to see more walk-ons play?

I just wasn't aware things had gotten so soft. Teams can just quit and have refs shorten the game if they're losing.
