I think you’re underestimating the pressure Varina can put on a team especially if they’re playing at home. Reidsville is a good win but if Varina played them I’d have Varina -21. The Blue Devils honestly shouldn’t have lost a game last year and I think with the added additions they have they will learn from those mistakes and go 15-0 this year. The only team that will come within 28 points of Varina in Class 4 is Huguenot. I’m telling you we are a year away from the playing field in Class 4 being completely leveled across the board.
@ Maury this week
@ Oscar Smith next week
vs Grimsley, NC middle of the season
vs Highland Springs near the end of the season

That's 3 state champions from last year and a runner-up.
If they go undefeated during the regular season, I'll agree with you on 15-0. But, that's a gauntlet for any team.

Typically, you don’t hear people expecting a team to go 15-0 for any high school. It’s winning a championship. I don’t the Varina coach is saying to his guys “15-0 is the expectation” lol

I don’t know about that. Reidsville is very good. Not as good as Grimsley or Hough but definitely on a tier or so down. I’m definitely not crowning GW anything by beating Reidsville but there isn’t much difference in the competition level between Reidsville and Varina.

I do agree with you on the playing field balancing out next season. Varina, Dinwiddie, Huguenot (pending some things) and Petersburg will be a heck of a region.

I personally have a lot of questions if Huguenot doesn’t get a W over Varina this year because they graduate literally everybody. It’s now or never for Charles Scott

I think that game with Dinwiddie could, COULD scream Salem -14. A young team on the road coming off what could be a blowout loss to Highland Springs. Plus I had the chance to watch a little of that Dinwiddie v Colonial Heights game last week and idk if Colonial Heights is that much improved but boy they were manhandling dinwiddie’s DLine. I know they have bigger kids to put on the line than that. Any team with size shouldn’t have a problem with Dinwiddie’s defense at all.
Dinwiddie had some defensive linemen that didn’t play against CH but I agree, they didn’t get a lot of push on CH’s offensive line the first half. I think the LB core will keep them in a lot of ball games but the defensive line is probably the weak link as we speak. I think their offense is a lot more versatile than it has been in some time which will also help.

Sherando smothered Loudoun County. 48-21 Final, but it wasn't that close. LC scored once on a deep pass, once aided heavily by penalties on Sherando, and again with 0:22 left in the game. LC could move the ball with short passes to the sides but didn't make it back to the line of scrimmage often on the ground. That said, it looked to my eye that LC has taken a big step back this year so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Colonial Heights ain’t the prettiest to watch but they are a dang good football team. I personally thought they played Dinwiddie better than Hopewell and Petersburg last year. Very tough bunch of kids and they have some excellent coaches. The Central District is probably the most well rounded district in the Richmond metro this year (the Central and Colonial will be very good too).

Not underestimating them at all. They are still my clear favorite. Just in comparison to last year they were a 99/100 and this years team is more like a 95/100.

Varina is blowing Huguenot out this season in a potential 4B championship, similar to the 2024 game at Varina. Huguenot has no depth and a weak OL. Huguenot will out 'talent' teams at the skill positions, but winning come Nov/Dec., is in the trenches.

I definitely oversold Reidsville. They’re no where close to a tier of Grimsley and Hough in the state of NC. Definitely a very good football team but I oversold them and GW. Hats off to Amherst, but I think Danville had a big game hangover (which they historically do after a big win). Amherst (who Sherando and Salem whipped) made a lot of big plays on GW’s defense last night. Can’t compare scores but you can look at trends.

Also I think people are overselling Varina and underselling Huguenot. Varina is a good football team and Kaleb Wyche is the best player in C4, but no where (and I mean no where) as good as they were the past 2 years. I don’t see where they’re head and shoulders better than the rest of the pack. Maury (MISSING PRIV BIG TIME btw) had big play after big play on this defense last night. Big time coaching questions (Varina blown lead and Maury throwing to the end zone at the Varina 16 yard line and getting that holding penalty instead of running the ball closer for a game winning field goal in regulation).

Was surprised to see Amherst have as much success as they did against GW last night. Watched the game on NFHS. While GW was clearly the better team, Amherst moved the ball more effectively against their defense than they managed against Salem or Sherando, who both had them largely locked down until garbage time.

If not for the delay and questionable play calling that game would’ve gotten out of hand quick. Priv is definitely missed on the defensive side for Maury they had zero “Want To” at times last night. Huguenot had a big game last night. Sloppy at times of course because of first game woes but they looked good. Come November they’re gonna need to find a running game can’t just drop back 30 times. I’d also be careful about the post game antics of calling out Route 5. A lot of arrogance there 🥴

I'll give a bit of a pass because a 2 hour delay for high schools kids is a lot. But to me it looked like Maury and Varina were playing at a clear level above HSHS and Huguenot. HSHS offense was non existent. And Huguenot QB will have no chance to make those runs against Varina. Lewis the WR is the real deal. He'll be a threat but there's nothing else there.

As for post games antics it's getting pretty disappointing seeing the Varina coaches approach referees after games. You're on camera, just go be happy with the win.

I think HSHS offense being non-existent was bit on the play-calling . Springs have the talent at the skill pos. on offense to compete, you just got to give your guys a chance. You can’t keep waiting until 3rd and long or when you’re down 3 or 4 tds to decide to pass the ball

IMO, Huguenot is still holding onto “almost beating” Varina back in ‘23. I got a lot of love for Charles Scott but we can’t call a game a rivalry when it hasn’t been close. I love the confidence by CJ and Lewis but that’s what you prove in your play and believe within yourself, not speaking it and giving the giant bulletin board material. I’m going to sound like an old head but that’s what’s wrong with these young boys and society now.

If I had to rank 4B I’m going 1. Varina, small gap, 2. Huguenot, a tad bigger gap until the young pups mature over the next 3 weeks, 3. Dinwiddie, and even larger gap, 4 & 5. Spotsy/Hanover. Can’t be the man until you beat the man. Varina is the man for the foreseeable 3 months.
