First post on new boards. Last night stunk. But that's sports.
Greg will be here next week against BC as he should. Let's see how team responds.
I still think we can beat BC and get this season back on track. How the players respond will be telling.

Lot of negativity around the program right now. Coaches and players need to shut that out and just CHOP.

Winners face adversity, shut out the noise, focus and give it their all.

Losers like @RU Cheese hide behind keyboards and quit 5 minutes into the season and start polls to fire the coach.

While I agree that bad losses happen (See ND vs NIU or Texas in 2022) a lot of times those teams will also outperform and beat ranked teams, have up seasons, and so on. So there is a sliding scale of failure and success.

IMO This loss stings more for RU because they haven’t had that breakthrough Win to offset the embarrassing loss last night. Theres is no, “well they knocked off number 10 OSU last year. This was just a stinker and it happens so whatever.” It’s just been the lows and no highs for the past few years so I understand the negativity.

State Penn fired JF after a loss to NW because they are serious about football. Name another school in the Big 10 a coach going into his 7th year could lose to a team that hasn't won a game since Oc 2024 a team that we paid a million $$ to play us would keep their job after a loss. If GS keeps his job we aren't serious about football. How much more do you need to see to realize that GS isn't a good coach, good at talking a big games but he has always carried a little stick.

If GS keeps his job we aren't serious about football.

I made a post on the r/cfb subreddit that GS has the hottest seat in the country, and at least half of the comments were repeating things like we have a big deficit / we don't have the money/who would we be hiring smh🤦‍♂️

Yeah that wasn’t a defense of Greg or RU. More so, sure these losses happen every year but those other teams bounce back and have out performed. RU has not so there’s no silver lining here. It’s just the floor* dropping even more and that’s not acceptable by any measure

Minnesota last year was a bad loss. PSU last year was a bad loss. Nebraska two years ago was a bad loss. Those were games we should have or could have won, and that set back the trajectory a little bit or took away a great opportunity.

This loss is a program destruction, reputation destroying, loss.

May we add UCLA and Illinois, please?

This was a loss of historic proportions. Given the dearth of Thursday night games, the "weak" opponent, the margin of defeat versus the Vegas spread, and the (yet again) empty post-game fireworks, this game has once again made RU FB the laughing stock of national media, sports and non-sports included. Save the political ranting for the CE board, but last night's mockery even made it to the Fox News headline page.

For real, the Fox News site has not one but TWO articles posted right near the top:

"29.5 Favorite Scarlet Knights crumble in the worst defeat of the Schiano era"
(Complete with a picture of Greg looking lost, constipated or likely both)

"UMass safety humiliates Rutgers QB, then obliterates unsuspecting woman on the sidelines"

Keep chopping indeed.

It’s not that we lost to UMass that bothers me. It’s the fact that we’re not as good as UMass that really stings.
Definitely an eye opener. I watched on tv so you can't always tell, but they appeared bigger, faster, and stronger. They brought in 50 new guys. Saving grace in this day and age. The next Rutgers coach will have an opportunity to flip the roster very quickly. The sooner Keli makes a move at this point the better. Her timeline was moved forward much faster after last night and though not ideal, it's where she is.

Schiano's rep really ruined any chances of success. No one wanted to work for him. He took forever to hire a DC, missing the portal window completely. That ruined any chance to make the D better via player acquisition.

Cycle of failure he is in. Cut bait. Something I learned in business. When you know you want to fire someone, don't wait. Nothing good comes of it.

I don’t know how anyone who watched that game can think in terms of “a bad game” one off type thing. RU got pushed around for large portions of the game. If it was a crazy 1st game with 5 or 6 turnovers but RU had a 2-1 yardage advantage and dominated up front and lost by 3, I would say ok there is still hope. Very hard to have any hope for this season with the way it looked. An important question, who is evaluating the transfer talent pool? Many of those guys on D looked out of their league.

Still trying to figure out the OL performance. not a big change in personel from last year. a group that played nationally ranked B10 defenses tougher than this opponent. A group that did well on the first drive of the game. If it was just the D I'd say last year's problems didn't get fixed but that's not the case,

No one was evaluating the transfer pool on D because we didn't have a staff. No one wants to work for Schiano so it took forever to hire, thus missing the entire portal window.

So we got what we got. Left over bin. And it shows. These players aren't D1 material much less P2.

You left out UCLA and Illinois 2 years ago. 2024 is the great lost opportunity season of Schiano 2.0. If a perfectly thrown TD pass isn't dropped against Nebraska, they don't utterly **** the bed against UCLA, and he doesn't make the boneheaded decision to ice the kicker against Illinois, that's a special year. If they don't collapse in the second half against Iowa and Minnesota last year, and AK doesn't fumble the snap against Penn State, we're looking at 3 straight winning seasons and a much different discussion, but alas, the discussion is what it is because of inadequate coaching.

Chopping is the dumbest sports mantra ever. It assumes you are always in a bad spot and need to work out of it. Appropriate for Schiano though.
In other words Greg looks like dead-wood on the chopping block after his coaching made RU look like the cupcake in last nights game against the Mighty Minutemen

We all hope it was a bad game and those do happen.

Yes Harisymiak had the team prepped and knew a lot of what would happen (for all the KC love doesn't everyone know most plays that are coming which JH seemed to) The changing of the D with 15 seconds on the play clock when the communication cuts off so Lonergan was on his own (why has KC always programmed them to wait till end of clock when D can time it) was great coaching by JH.

BUT it didn't appear to be just that. It appeared Umass had better more physical players, which wouldn't make it what we hope-a bad game.

This occurred not only in the pickoff play but where were our athletes on kick and punt block--we always had some that seemed athletic enough to get to the ball. Last night, it didn't appear there were any who could be a playmaker.

The hope is it was shellshock, overthinking and being put in the wrong place-as opposed to not B10 level talent. This week will tell a lot about the talent level, in addition to coaching.

I watched the 20 minute highlights and realized RU is genuinely a bad team. I'm sure UMass with a RU coach helped them. But RU was slow, weak, poor techniques, bad reads, cant shed blocks or tackle - confusion and lethargy were all over. OL was manhandled and secondary was lost. UMass looked like a BIG team and RU looked like a bad BE team. The last time I saw Rutgers that bad was Vs UConn 2011. RU had just beaten Cincy 20-3 the week before. RU went to UConn expecting to leave with part of a BE title but ran into a buzz saw and got beat 40-22 (-9 rushing for game), Sanu and Brandon Coleman were only bright lights.

Aside from Howard its hard to see lights in the tunnel. Cant see any B1G wins but if OL solidifies a bit and Raymond can get over the LOS then maybe RU can get some ball control. UMass had 13.00 min edge while RU had only 30 yds rushing. It would be nice to think Indy would be a fun game but fun games are hard for GS in the B1G

His Superbowl is BC, Howard, Northwestern, Nebraska, Maryland, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan State. He needs to win all or most of these games to wash the stink off.
That would be the worst thing that could happen because then they might decide to retain him. It's time for a change..

This is not just a bad loss. This game is a realization for all of the fan base that Schiano is a terrible coach. He is at best an average coach, but is completely capable of being unprepared for lesser opponents. There should be no one in the fanbase who should ever tell folks to donate more money ro the football program until we have a coach who has proven to be capable of winning every single winnable game and 2-3 upsets per year.

Schiano's style is horrific. It isn't capable of upsets and allows less teams the ability to hang around or in Umass' case, run away with it. It's feckless, lack of aggression and lack of confidence inspiring. His incessant focus on things like handing the ball of to the ref properly and controlling room temperatures aren't things that actually drive winning football. It's mastering the mundane, when he should be focused on mastering what goes in in between the lines during live play.

From Bleacher Report

From Bleacher Report
It's only Friday morning of Week 1 of the CFB season.

But good luck finding a worse loss than last night in New Jersey.

➤ UMass was 0-12 last year with a -344-pt differential. It was their first win since October 2024.

➤ The Scarlet Knights were 29.5-pt favorites — and trailed at one point by 23

➤ Best part: It was a buy game

Rutgers handed UMass a massive check for that L.

UMass received $1.55 million to play.

I understand why Schiano has so many supporters that still gave faith in him
I was one myself and won't post petty insults trying to mock those that still have faith in him
making RU a good program.
But I'm now among the Greg must go crowd, if RU doesn't start showing it can be a good team .

I'm not waving a white flag implying the season is over after one disastrous game, against a team considered a cupcake going into the game, to start off the season .
But I do demand Schiano prove he can make Rutgers into a competitive program capable of beating the best of the BIG and only an 8 win 2026 season would give me hope he could turn RU into a good B1G program.
Anything less would be unacceptable and I would be pushing for his ouster .

Right now I'm just saying he hasn't proved able to lead Rutgers out of the wilderness and if he doesn't show he can do it by the end of this season, Zinn must look for someone capable of making Rutgers a permanent resident of the promised land and send Greg packing .

So sad to think we had to pay a team to prove we need to pay a coach to leave.
That cash could have went to the buyout.. same for Howard I'm sure.$2mm in total for both..

Speaking of the transfer pool. Someone mentioned this in the game thread last night. Why does UMASS have transfers from Nebraska, VT, Indiana, OSU, and our guys are from Rice, South Dakota, Toledo etc. WTF is GS even looking at?
A very good question indeed. T

hose two who are brothers on the DL, the secondary and OL guys looked better phsyically at least for one game than we did.

Did the Cignetti outlier phenomenon-that if you did it at a lower level you can do it at any level-(TKR podcast repeated this often)--infect RU and caused them to focus on lower level success stories, but who may not have the physical talents to play in the B10?

The LB Allison looked small--Jones looked slight-Munn looked waifish---there are more that can be identified.

But yes every time I heard a play was being made by an Indiana transfer or a Va Tech transfer etc I was like wtf we have Drake etc
