I just watched a video about a woman who's Alexa device recorded a private conversation, then sent the recording to a random employee in Seattle of her husband's. Given, that incident happened A LONG time ago, it got me thinking about default settings across Android, iOS, Alexa, Internet Browsers, etc. that are set to gather data by default. In a more recent video, I watched a woman who was called by her daughter who was supposedly kidnapped and being held for ransome. The entire event was AI. Hackers are using Audio Harvesting, Voice Cloning and Caller ID Cloning and it's pretty scary.

Soooo, in this thread let's discuss tips and strategies to help minimize our digital footprints and exposure.

Let's start w/ Alexa (I've been building an excel spreadsheet with device tabs):

SettingWhat to doWhy it matters
Follow-Up ModeSay “Alexa, turn off Follow-Up Mode” or open the device settings and toggle it offIt prevents Alexa from staying in an additional command-listening state after a request. Amazon confirms it can be toggled by voice or in app/device settings. amazon
Review voice historyGo to Alexa Privacy → Review Voice History; listen/read transcripts and delete anything unwantedAccidental wake-ups happen. This lets you identify them and remove saved interactions. Amazon’s Privacy Hub says you can view, hear, and delete voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. amazon
Automatic deletionSet voice recordings to auto-delete after the shortest retention option you are comfortable withReduces the amount of historical voice data retained in the account
“Help improve Alexa” / use recordingsTurn off sharing of voice recordings for product improvement, if the option is offeredIt limits optional use of recordings beyond providing the service
Drop InDisable it globally, or restrict it to trusted household members onlyDrop In is intercom-like access; it deserves a stricter setting than ordinary voice commands
Calling and messagingDisable if unused; review contacts and communication permissionsReduces the people/services that can communicate through the device
Voice purchasingTurn it off, or require a purchase confirmation/PINPrevents unwanted purchases, including those caused by guests, children, or mistaken wake-ups
Microphone buttonUse the physical mic-off button whenever privacy matters more than convenienceThis is the clearest practical choice for bedrooms, private conversations, visitors, or sensitive work discussions
Connected skillsRemove skills you do not use; inspect their permissions and linked accountsSkills may involve third-party privacy practices, not just Amazon’s
Smart-home accessReview devices, routines, household profiles, and linked servicesA privacy audit should include who can control locks, cameras, lights, and other connected devices

I've won them, and been given them as gifts before, and never hooked one up. It's main job is listening, and I don't want/need that in the house. I've got enough things keeping tabs on me, don't need to add another.
My house is fully automated (I got bored during COVID). Now I'm thinking about switching to Home Assistant and control everything internally. Darn smart phones aren't much better...the things that make all this tech work are the same things that will be our undoing. Ugh.

I like to play a game where I see how long it takes something in my house to pick up what I’m saying and translate it to ads on YouTube. The tv remote (Amazon fire tv) moves the quickest and is < 15 minute turnaround between saying “crackerjack” and getting ads for ritz crackers. I eat neither crackerjack nor ritz crackers but anticipate that On3’s ads will deliver soon because they’re too stupid to ingest the whole sentence

I don't have Alexa, but whenever I go to a house that does it I tell her to recite Pi.

A few years ago we had multiple Alexa’s in our house. Then about a year and a half ago we still had multiple Alexa’s in our house. Still do to this day, in fact they control mor lights and devices than they used to. Why worry about one device in our home when multiple devices are doing the same thing everyday. Hell I’m using one right now.

The wife and I will play similar games. Have you ever mentioned the name of the device that should be listening in. We’ve said things like I’m sure Siri is listen to our conversation about us wanting a new couch or similar things. When you do this, your phone/Siri does not supply you with ads for a new couch. It’s like oh sh.it they know I’m listening.

Well, unlike most on here that are discussing top secret stuff and doing million dollar deals, I don't really discuss anything that would be a problem if it were disclosed. I actually don't do a bunch of stuff like controlling the house, but it's handy to have a device that can handle grabbing random info for me.
