Pizzou added another player today - rules for thee but not for me?

Not only did they find a magical roster spot for MM, they just added another player this late in the game.

Can someone explain how a program that already had a full roster added two players who are just now enrolling?

Seems to me we’re the only program in the country playing by the “rules”

Most likely, they had 2 players move off scholarship, or redshirt. That's the only thing I can think of.

Redshirts count against the scholarship limit and supposedly walk ons are no longer a thing.

So the OP raises a good question, I’m not sure how they’re getting away with this.
Well, let's get Lane Kiffin to try it, that'll put an end to whatever Missouri is doing.

I'd really like to know who their supposed walk-on is? Every one of their players was a solid prospect.

Luke Northweather and Nicholas Randall are the only two that didn't play much but still wouldn't be walk-ons.

I kind of hate our conference.

Medical Waiver Alternative: Additionally, freshman guard Annor Boateng is currently injured and expected to take a medical redshirt year, meaning he wouldn't count toward the active limit anyway.

Medical waivers don't exist....exist to screw Kentucky I guess.

Also this BS:

Reporting from the Fulton Sun and Columbia Daily Tribune confirms that Missouri's compliance department successfully utilized the House settlement implementation rules to claim a "Designated Student-Athlete" exemption. This creates the extra 16th spot specifically for Mark Mitchell's return. [1, 2]
The exact designation remains an internal athletic department decision. Because it functions behind the scenes as a paperwork exemption to bypass the strict 15-player cap, Missouri is not required to publicize which player holds the label.

That BS above is how we fell behind so quickly. Everyone else was skirting rules while we were making them up, to look good at the next PTA meeting with Mitch.

Supposedly there are no walk ons now. At least that’s what we were told when they changed the rules and expanded to 15 spots …that 15 was now an absolute roster limit with teams no longer allowed to use walk ons to go over.

So I’m baffled as to how Mizzou is getting away with this.

SEC going to be loaded this season. That will be the excuse when we finish about 5th.
Excuse or explanation?

Excuse would be “the SEC is loaded so we need to excuse Pope and keep him forever.”

Have yet to hear very many people who think that way.

Explanation would be “the SEC is loaded so we need to consider that when thinking about how good/bad a team is.”

Florida won a national title two years ago while losing double the amount of regular season conference games (4) than they did the year after (2).

Everything doesn’t have to be an “excuse.” If the SEC were theoretically LOADED, Kentucky finished 5th but were 1 game back from 1st place, that’s not the same if we were 5th and 4 games back.

I think what you’re trying to get at is you’re worried about fans keeping the coach around by softening the edges on the negative aspects of his performance. That’s an unfounded fear. Batt will make the call to change the coach if/when it’s time even if some fans think 5th wasn’t terrible in a strong conference.

5th is being optimistic IMO. I think we're behind Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri. We're about even with Bama and Vandy but I'd give Bama a huge coaching advantage over Pope because he hasn't come close to beating Bama.
You mean a 9th seed in the SEC tourny but really we were a 8 but the tie breaker stuff got us. We coulda been 8th. Year three Pope loading.

I made a thread the other night before I went to bed. It was talking about Mark Pope Era could be fun.

Then I woke up and seen Mitchell went back to Missouri after just committing to UK. I've accepted Pope was the crossover after Cal until we got another coach. I'm not mad at the circus. Just going to patiently wait for the next era and hopefully see Kentucky at the top again. We're supposed to bounce back. It's been awhile this time feels like.

If someone was a walkon last year they maintain that status and are not apart of the 15.

I don’t think so, man.

Suppose it’s 2028 and Kentucky just went 23-12 and lost in the Round of 32 and nowhere near contention. You think Batt is going to say:

“Hmm, I’m really on the fence about letting Pope go. I mean, yeah, I could go get my friend Nate on board….and sure cornbreadnmilk and kyhankypanky seem dissatisfied about the coaching results, but that UKFan0708 account was a little too accurate about the schedule difficulty. Ima pass on diss.”

I just don’t think that’s how it works.

Instead, the unfounded fear is used to shut people up who want to have a nuanced discussion. And it’s been like that for awhile, it frankly gets exhausting. Discussing details and explaining things ≠ making excuses. It’s just a way to tell fans how to fan. “Be exclusively negative or you’re the problem.” “Be exclusively positive or you’re the problem.” No, bickering over that stuff is the real problem. It makes us all miserable at one another and fight like children. For no reason.

Former walkons are exempted from the new scholarship limit. For instance North Carolina had a walkon, the NCAA passed their new rules, this walkon still has eligibility, but under the new rules he must be on scholarship (but won't count against the scholarship limit.) So UNC has 16 players rostered this season.

I’d take 5th right now but look for another 8th or 9th place finish. As good as as we will/should be offensively we are going to be the opposite defensively and we know offense can have many off nights. Add in the pope factor of not game planning well, quirky substitution patterns and, if history repeats, injuries to key players, this will turn into another **** show season.

I’m assuming the walk on thing ended because in reality with NIL, you could just make as many players as you’d want walk ons and NIL money could pay for everything like a scholarship would

Some won't believe that
Who is the “some” that won’t believe that? It objectively is the worst decade for basketball since Rupp arrived in the early 30s.

1930s - Won a Helms title and a Premo Poretta
1940s - Won two natties and NIT title
1950s - Won two natties and another one was stolen by the NCAA
1960s - Made national championship runner up and had two elite teams. 1966 and 1964.
1970s - Won a title and made a national runner up
1980s - Made a Final Four and had another elite team in 1986 that should have made one
1990s - Won two natties, lost a third in overtime, made another Final Four and played in the greatest basketball game ever played
2000s - The only real contender for worst but at least the 2003 and 2004 teams were really good, both 1 seeds. 2005 was an overtime away from a Final Four.
2010s - A nattie, a national runner up and two other final fours. An undefeated regular season.
2020s - A Sweet 16……

It really is crazy that we’ve only gotten past the tourney’s first weekend once this decade. And even that one and only time ain’t much of a memory, given that it ended with us getting smoked by a hated rival.

Never thought I’d see UK basketball have a dry run quite like this.

A lot of idiots on here still aren’t sure about Pope. My paranoia that he gets a few more years seems quite founded to me. I am guessing the less intense fans will also have way too much patience. Less pressure from the fans means that some AD we don’t really know may not see the urgency in the situation.

Man, I hear what you’re saying but I just don’t agree. I think the fans have been more than angry enough given the current results. Those things take care of themselves anyway. No need to legislate that fans have to be negative or have to be positive. Frankly, given Pope’s results so far the most honest response is like 45% satisfaction level — nowhere near Kentucky expectations and nowhere near conclusive either. The only thing the policing does is make having discussions extremely boring. Say Pope’s record being similar to Gillispie’s is insufficient due to the strength of schedule? You’re a sunshine pumper. Say people who’ve watched practice since June report the team has an Elite Eight ceiling? You’re a basher. Unnecessary, let’s allow honest dialogue and allow the specific details in there and not feel the need to silence voices.

I understand what you’re saying. I think our biggest difference is that I don’t care about interesting discussions when it comes to Pope - at least not like I think you mean. I am downtrodden, depressed, and demoralized when it comes to UK basketball. The most interesting conversation for me honestly is who will be the next coach. I rarely post on here anymore because most of the threads about UKBB are depressing and full of irrational optimism.

To be fair, MM enrolled here. He was a part of this university. Wouldn’t that technically make him an intraconference transfer when he went back to pizzou? I’m sure that’s been brought up. It’d be nice to have an AD with balls that really got their hands dirty with this kind of stuff.
Just bring Jurich and Katina in since rules don’t matter anymore.

Correct, except they are a scholarship player now and not a walk-on. But the big thing is they won't count against the scholarship limit.
They don’t count against the cap if they were a walkon last year though. Had to be a walk on prior to the new rule. Once those are phased out then it’s 15 no matter what. Only other way for more is a season ending injury before the season.

Technically redshirts do still exists but not in the way they used to, or at least in way of providing a year that doesn't count against your eligibility. If you redshirt, you still count against the 15 roster cap, still lose 1 of your years of 5 for 5, and still maintain your scholarship and NIL.

The exception is that you can be declared medically retired (career ending injury), or full season injured (for an injury before the season starts) that is reviewed by a board of doctors and the NCAA and the school can be awarded your roster spot back to replace you. In those cases the player still loses eligibility (career eligibility for medically retired) and (one season for full season injured) though. That's the only instance I've seen "red-shirt" mentioned in terms of it's use going forward.

Apologies to the Chicken Littles.

Will wait before jumping off the bridge in the preseason.
