Interesting on the tv money with the 24 team playoff-
So why are the CFP’s keepers doing this? For once, it’s not the money. The Athletic reported that ESPN is paying them “north of $300 million” for the additional games. After $250 million is paid back to the networks that were airing their conference championship games, the 138 FBS schools will get a cut that’s barely enough to afford a backup receiver.
What’s the real reason administrators are willing to suck the soul out of a sport they supposedly want to protect?
It’s because they’re only nominally in charge at this point.
In the age of both $50 million rosters and $50 million coaching buyouts, presidents and athletic directors now serve at the whim of impatient boosters and overzealous politicians. They’re stuck on a hamster wheel of desperation, begging for donations to fund a championship roster, then begging for more to fire their coach for falling short, then begging for even more to give the next guy a guaranteed contract and an even richer championship roster.
