We had more than enough talent to avoid the humiliation of getting beat by Minnesota the last few years. Donnie and Dylan being gone hopefully helps. That said, we have to do a better job of evaluating and acquiring talent.

This thread wasn’t meant to be about that though. I’m just interested in following guys I want to see succeed. Even getting a sniff on practice squads means you’re a helluva athlete. Kenny Bell spending his whole career on practice squads should tell us that. We’ve had some good players but not enough of them and certainly not enough elite ones recently.

I attended most of those games , they took us to the wood shed. we were NOT a more talented team .

I think you’re confusing chemistry problems and bad coaching with being “soft”. I heard with several games left that the O linemen were done with Donovan and Dylan. Open rebellion was the term that was used by a booster of substance. He also stated at that time that Donovan wouldn’t be retained.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Butler didn’t get it done. He may be a very good DB coach but he clearly didn’t get his college guys in a position to be successful. Lots of comments about the defense being confused about their responsibilities in given situations. Are the players really “soft” or is it just bad coaching which cost Donnie and Butler their jobs?

With all the Nebraska boys we had from the 2023 & 2024 classes, I'm surprised we weren't the toughest team in America.

our coach is a bleeding heart pusssy who hates competitiveness, oozes softness and coddles his players like he's their doting mother

try as they might, tough kids like gage stenger can only do so much to impact this kind of culture

you seem to really enjoy watching highly recruited primadonnas come here from elsewhere, get their sh*t pushed in & embarrass our great state.

Suh doesn’t agree with your takes about Rhule. I respect your opinion but Suh’s Instagram posts carry a lot of weight with me. I’m ambivalent about Rhule and at least frustrated with him, but when I see guys like Suh line up behind him I take note.

Why is that as was not a problem years ago. So many RB's from Omaha, linemen from both small and large towns. Are the numbers down due to potential injuries? Soccer? Poor coaching? Just curious.

This same topic was recently talked about on the Iowa board (including several Iowa high school football coaches) as the # of kids going out for football in Iowa is declining too.

There wasn’t one clear-cut reason, but reasons given included: concerns about long-term head injuries; specialization of kids nowadays focusing on just one sport/activity; increased popularity of soccer; more distractions with social media, etc.; and perhaps just less motivated kids these days.

Years ago we relied a great deal on players from Nebraska, Iowa and other Midwest states and picked up a few skill players from Texas, California, etc. Now we rely on getting most from states outside of the Midwest. Not easy to recruit kids from the South as a different culture. Lot of big money in the SEC area. Who knows what college football will look like 5 to 10 years from now.

In the glory days there was consistency where the NU coaches encouraged Nebraska high schools to run the option. Nebraska kids were more likely to be doing farm labor instead of sitting in a machine all summer. This meant huge kids were also really strong and fit. Rural populations have shrunk or at least are not growing the same as urban, high school football in rural areas has become less popular, and more expensive, and the national circuit more important to development.

Nine of eleven offensive starters from the last national title were from Nebraska. If that is a necessity to us winning, we will never win again. Scott Frost, Ahman Green, big, strong oline from Nebraska, running a high-powered offense just isn't ever happening again. Unless...Florida is flooded and people move here.

Scottsbluff's own Sabastian Harsh made the Texans 53 man roster. Walked on at Wyo, transferred to NC State.

That dude was a hell of a Class B QB a few years ago. Probably the most intimidating QB in recent memory. Scottsbluff was good then and they are still good.

He played just well enough for them to want to sign him to the practice squad without having to worry too much about someone else taking him. He actually had some great throws when I watched a replay of one of their games last night. His receivers dropped several easy catches, had trouble getting open at times and his O line was not good.

Interesting. I'm surprised you were able to sit and watch a 49ers pre-season game. That's more than I'm willing to do! I'm just passing along what a 49er podcaster said.

Lots of guys on practice squads. With our records over the past 10 years that shouldn’t surprise anyone. We have to get better talent. It isn’t just a matter of development. Gotta get more naturally talented guys too.

I'm convinced that we've stunted our ability to produce pros by continually taking in transfers who are OK (but hyping them up) and keeping our kids in the program behind them. The difference between the two groups is much closer than we realize. The thinking sometimes is that our younger guys suck and will always suck. And anyone who played for a different school must be better. Then we get the same results anyway and those transfers do not even make honorable mention all conference and never get drafted. How hard is that to pay top dollar for transfer after transfer and just about none of them lives up to his billing? That's quite an accomplishment.

We’ve developed some walkon Johnny Tryhards in to NFL practice squad players. The problem is we need to recruit more guys with better upside athletically IMO. I think we landed some 3-4 star guys over the past 10 years who didn’t have high enough ceilings. We need more Elijah Pritchetts.

The truth of the matter is that having a 4 star rating next to your name doesn't mean anything. We're getting 4 star kids who got "offers" from good schools but nothing more than that. Out recruiting Louisville and Central Florida for a 4 star Florida kid isn't the same as beating Florida and Georgia.

If given a choice between winning with Nebraska boys or out of state boys, I'll of course take Nebraska boys all day. But that ain't gonna happen because there's not enough talent here.

If the talent was so good here, you'd think the great Cignetti would try & snag a player or two. But he ain't even looking this direction.

We're not even seeing many Nebraska boys succeed outside of Nebraska at a really high level. What, 1 or 2 guys per year? We cant win with such little talent in the state.
