This inning is Yankee dynasty era esque. Scratch and claw for the lead, then deliver a knockout shot immediately after the stunner… and then Rosario just hustles an infield single that means nothing more than forcing a few more pitches from the starter. Gets thrown out stealing but I love the aggression
Really great win today. The west coast swing is going to be tough this late in the season. So we really needed to extend our lead over BOS this weekend…and we did just that.
Very good point. I have to admit that I didn’t hate the D. Willams move when we made it. I always assumed we’d have addressed our 3B issues via free agency by now.

Tonight could be a good night if we find a way to win after heading out west with no travel day. Rays and Sox both losing late.
Looking at the boxscore I see our bullpen was absolutely terrible and Bednar was trashed. It's no secret I don't care for Bednar. I don't see how he can help the Yankees in the postseason. A closer that can't strike out batters is a recipe for failure in the postseason. Gil pitched 2 innings in relief striking out 3 of the 6 outs he got but gave up a run.
I completely understand your concerns with Bednar. It’s worth pointing out that he has converted 31 of 34 save opportunities (91%), which puts him 9th in MLB at this point. He definitely could bite us in October, but I feel like we have several other more even more troubling issues as the calendar hits September.
3B - Caballero is hitting .239 with an OBP under .300 and an OPS of .671. If McMahon isn’t able to get back, then we lowly ride with Caballero in the postseason…which is a hole in the lineup.
CF - For a brief stretch in August, Grisham got hot and carried us to a few wins. But, man, he’s been terrible since. On last night’s broadcast, they pointed out that he is now 2 for his last 34. He’s now hitting .209 on the season with an OPS barely in the 700s (.704). But where do we go? Do we let Jones play CF in October games? Belly? Can’t be Judge. We have to hope Judge can play full-time in RF…because if he DHs then either Rice or Garcia sits.
SS - I got nothing here. I love Lombard the prospect. But I don’t think he proves to be an asset in October. And yet it has to be him…or Cabby I guess…which, as noted above, isn’t doing much at all offensively.
2B - Jazz has gotten hot of late. Maybe he sustains that. If so, we will be fine at 2B in October. He and Cabby at least give us threats on the basepaths. I do hope Jazz’s defense holds up in the postseason.
The good news is that we will have a REALLY good rotation in October…perhaps the best in baseball. We will throw Schlittler, Fried and Cole for sure. And probably Rodon, as he has pitched well since coming back. And we have some new bullets in the pen with Gil and Weathers and Warren and hopefully Schmidt. The sooner we can get them some relief appearances, the better. But they will help a worn down bullpen. Truth is, we are going to have to pitch our way to a World Series. And we can do just that. But the margins are going to be so thin with the lineup we have to roll out there.
Our team is an awful hitting team. They have won games in spite of a lot of holes on the team and Boone's stupidity and hard headedness and that speaks of how bad other teams are. We do not consistently hit with men on base, very seldom play small ball, make many base running mistakes, and so on. The bullpen has been crap all year. Allowing inherited runners to score keeps their ERAs down. Bednar pitching to contact is not what we need as a closer despite his saves total. His ERA has hovered around 3.00 all year. That's not good for a closer. A good closer should be at 2.00 or under. Can't argue with many of your points. Jazz and Grisham have always been streaky and you covered about everything. I don't like seeing Rice being the DH. He needs to be in the field and not the DH on a regular basis. Both he and Garcia make really good defensive plays but you can't let Rice get rusty. As a catcher as well he plays bad hops good at 1st base. I like Gil in the pen and and as you said Warren and/or Weathers will be joining him soon and that should fix most things. As a former scout I look at players differently than the average fanan I deldom give away my secrets on a message board. Never know when my services may be needed. No. I scouted without analytics and metrics so no one would listen to me now. lol

To the point where they become regular turns in the late innings and talking heads will be going "I think the Yanks have fixed their pen....now we see why Cashman didn't pull the trigger on a bullpen arm at the deadline." Warren will be effective as a 2 inning bridge arm.
But we're going to be in the playoffs in a key game. And there's going to be a game where we had been using Gil...or Weathers...., etc in a set up spot and Boonie is going to instead put Cruz or someone else in. And that guy is going to blow the game. And afterwards, when Boone is being asked "why did you go to ______ instead of Gil / Weathers" and his response will be:
"________ has been in that spot a bunch. Gil/Weathers have been great for us but I felt like I needed an experienced bullpen arm there....someone thats been in that pressure.....and wasn't comfortable putting them in that spot."
And that will be all she wrote on the season.

Have never heard that. I would argue he's the exact opposite. Durable, has lived up to the huge contract he received in 2019, great defensively, not a flake, future first-ballot HOF inductee.
I watched the game last night. Didn't plan to but health issues kept me awake. Good game. It got very dicey late but the bullpen actually shut down a massive bases loaded jam. Grisham's failure to lay down a bunt in the 7th inning up 4-3 actually worked in the Yankees favor as he singled with 2 strikes and the Yankees ended up scoring 2 runs in the inning. Lol
Last night, the Angels really hit Cole hard. Eight hits and a few other balls hit right on the screws. I d on t know what it is about the Angels, but they always seems to swing well against us. Very glad we found a way to hang onto the lead in the middle innings and extend the lead a little later.
Need to come out tonight and finish the series. Then three huge games in San Diego.
The Angels have the worst record in baseball. They said last night the Angels in 6 games against the Yankees have scored at least 10 runs. Wow!
The rest of the league in over 100 games have done it only 5 times.
Well Schlittler goes 8 innings of 2 hit ball and once again gets no run support. Only 1 run. If the Yankees could score when he pitches he would be having one of those 1978 Ron Guidry years.

By holding Anaheim to a single run, Schlittler logged his 19th start of the season allowing one or zero runs. In doing so, he surpassed Ron Guidry (1978), Whitey Ford (1964) and Jack Chesbro (1904) for the most such starts in a single season in Yankees franchise history.

AL Cy Young is closer than some Yankees’ fans think. Schlittler is definitely leading right now, but Cease is very close in basically every measurable category.

We open the day only three back in the East again. Of course, we are 3-6 against the Rays this season, so we’d have to sweep them when they come to the Bronx this month to own the tiebreaker. But who knows? Really just want to get Judge back…anyone heard a timetable?
I don't think he went on the west coast road trip for pleasure. I think he plays Sunday with Monday being a travel day.
You are right, lakelaw. Boone is an idiot. He makes the dumbest moves, or non moves on a consistent basis, especially in handling the bullpen. Since it was Warren's turn to pitch he was moved to the pen to come in behind Fried. So why pull him after 2 innings? Then Bednar scared the hell out of me like always in the 9th. I didn't see the Jones play that you referenced because I turned it off after 9 innings because of the Yankees abysmal road record in extra innings. Glad I did.
Jones led off the 10th with a run scoring laser of a line drive off Mason Miller and took second on a bad throw (outfielder overthrew the cut off man) that ended up with the catcher
Tried to steal 3rd, called out. Immediately signaled the bench to challenge. He knew. He felt the bag and the tag. It was a great throw by the catcher. Boone stood there for 2 seconds and waived off the challenge. Replay showed he was pretty clearly safe. My thought was it’s obviously close, it’s extra innings…that should be an auto-challenge. Especially with an insurance run 90 feet away
I felt he should have let Warren stay in at least 4 innings. Pulled him after 2. Smdh Then Bednar damn near blew it in the 9th and I knew they would lose it in extras. Yankees have the best road record in baseball but the worst road record on the road in extra innings. That's when managing matters and we have a fool manager. He challenges plays we will clearly lose and like you say doesn't challenge obvious ones in our favor.
Well…looks like we will end up 3-3 on the west coast trip. I guess that was about what we should have expected without a travel day to get out there. Boston swept the Os on the road and will end up only 3 games back in the loss column. Just…too close for comfort (glad we have the tiebreaker).

And the Rays lost. Yankees hit a lot of hot shots right at fielders and Bellinger barely missed a home run. Just bad luck. Cole gave up 4 homers. I hate spending my Sunday afternoon watching the Yankees score ZERO runs against ex Yankees pitcher Mike King who was sent to them for Soto. King is a good pitcher we could have used while Soto is long gone.
Well, I only missed by 2 days. I said Judge would play Sunday. He's playing Tuesday. I have to admit I had some inside info though.
Honestly, I'd rather have Jones in CF and in the lineup. We all know that if Grisham was available opening day of the playoffs, Boone would have him in CF and Jones on the bench.....even if Grisham hadn't played in a month plus.
Jones swing has gotten much flatter and the results are that he is absolutely scalding line drives. And they are finding grass.
And for everyone looking for dingers, line drives can go out of the stadium as well. Stanton has about 100 HRs on balls that average 20 feet off the ground in his career. Willie McCovey went into the hall of fame with home runs that just about took pitchers head's off and just never dropped
