I keep thinking that if the SEC would have their way, they'd force Mitchell to play anywhere but in the SEC UNLESS it was at Mizzou. They don't have a roster spot for him. So it's not going to be there.

And with how much money Mitchell stands to lose being forced to go to any other school, that is massively deterimental to his earning power. Who is going to pay him as much as he will make at UK?

Answer is : nobody.

I just don't see a judge allowing the SEC to prevent him from coming and playing because Sankey has his panties in a wad. More and more, I am getting the feeling this is all posture by the SEC and Sankey, desperate to try to seem relevant. Same thing for everything the NCAA is doing.

Why you always arguing with everybody?
Who are you? If someone argues with me, I’ll argue right back. Got a problem with it? I try and be calm and leave everyone alone but I have a clan of losers that stalk me. Are you in that clan?

and who was I arguing with? I was agreeing with said poster. Can you not read either?

I find it hilarious that beatle is the only like you have gotten. Lmao. Takes an idiot to know one I see.

The SEC isn’t doing any of the nonsense they have suggested. They would get sued out of this world.

Right. “50% of that sports operating budget for the year”. That’s well into 8 figures when you take everything into account. There’s no way any program or college was ever going to pay that type of fine without a legal battle. Don’t care what they voted on.

Bingo. And who gives them the right to take that money? And where would it go? More raises for presidents and AD’s? F that.

Like someone else posted…it’s all posturing by the SEC! No way will they take that type of money from one of their schools. Zero chance

Yup. Especially Kentucky, that’s the only reason anyone knew the SEC played basketball for decades.

Question is… imo, why is the SEC fighting this so hard. A really good UK team does nothing but make more money for the SEC. I just don’t get it.

Any action taken by the NCAA or SEC that that cost UK, a player or Coach money will lose in court. Life liberty and money and the right to earn it wins.
Mitchell situation i dont think really has anything to do with wether he signed a 10 day or not. Its that UK just signed a rule stating if your not in portal on time you cant transfer intra conf . On letter of law I dont know how we navigate that . As a UK fan I really hope we can.......... How would you feel if another big sec school was trying to do what we are - would you say it should be allowed or screaming no way its against a rule they just signed ?

Mark Mitchell in all reality could just say he automatically was put into the draft, stayed in and played a few summer league games under assumption that he couldn’t go back to college, learns he can go back and go to court and wins his case, transfers to Kentucky probably gets 4-5 million, now SEC says he cannot go to Kentucky but that’s where he has his TRO.

So effectively SEC is stealing mark Mitchell’s money and by denying a transfer to Kentucky would be putting his purposeful Kentucky TRO as useless

in my very limited understanding of law I’d assume this would be trump card almost and really could get the judge to sympathize with Mitchell

We need an order striking down the SEC's rule for conference transfers. After that we are in the clear.
Correct. I imagine the attorneys are going to ask the court to apply severe punishments to the SEC & NCAA if they try to punish member schools for playing players the court deemed eligible.

I would think the courts would have no problem making that statement.

When did UK sign that? I would have to know that to give an opinion. If they signed before the players were granted eligiblity then I have no worries when it comes to court. If they signed after then it might get challenging.

I currently have no worries and think he will play. If he doesn't I'll be extremely surprised. Somebody needs to tip a judge.

If another school was doing this with a player that was eligible other than the timing of when he entered the portal I wouldn't make a big fuss about it.

It was just last season we watched Bama try and play that one guy. That was way more of a crazy thing than this Mitchell stuff.

The 2022 class getting a 5th year of eligibility shouldn't even be a battle.
It’s such a weird stance for the SEC to take too. They are putting in a lot of effort to keep a few players from capitalizing on their talent for 1 year, while allowing other classes to do it. I mean, I get you don't want legit pros coming back to college, but why try so hard to prevent a select few kids from playing?
Sankey is going to hear it loud and clear when he walks into some of these stadiums/arenas. I hope it was worth it and if Mitchell cant play for us due to his bs, he's going to get it both barrels.

I’ve only seen one idiot blame Pope for this. You can blame him for us needing a 4 so desperately bad at this point but you can’t blame him for trying to get Mitchell.
I've seen a few on here blame Pope for Mitchell not entering the portal, claiming Pope screwed this up and should have known better. I'm not kidding… . or surprised.

Pope was studying to be a surgeon at one point, not a wizzard that could see the future.

I can't either, my friend.

It's like the SEC tournament restarting in 1979. They've all wanted (SEC schools and the league office itself) to get Kentucky out of the tournament as fast as possible ( because they have always known UK will get a bid to the "big dance" - as opposed to this little one that they decided to throw) when they reinstituted prima-nocta otherwise known as ... bringing back the SEC tournament. :p

Throw a big shindig, hopefully get someone OTHER than Kentucky in the NCAA tournament. It was true in 1979, as it is now.

But when Kentucky is out of the SEC tournament, whichever host city is throwing the party in, they universally ***** and moan if Kentucky gets beat early. Businesses suffer. Fewer SEC basketball fans to fill the stands. It don't look good for the league.

I started going to the SECT in 1979 and remember how the atmosphere was then. In Birmingham, Kentucky fans brought everything. Big Blue Mist. The rest of the league combined was a drop in the bucket. Sure, it's changed a lot since then, but the league and the other schools universally want to keep Kentucky down.

They need to realize the league is much better off when Kentucky basketball ( and Big Blue Nation) is strong, present at the table, and the rest of the league rasies their game up to be included in that national discussion.

THEN you've got a story!

Who has legal standing to file the suit? All the schools signed off on it.
Like that evens matters rn.
signing a contract appears to be overrated

Also I would assume the man himself Mark Mitchell would have the legal standing to say Kentucky has already promised me 4-5 million and they are the highest bidders, so if you force me to not go to Kentucky then your effectively stealing my money

Anatomy of a crisis, Rafters edition.

Early last week: Pope signed Mark Mitchell. What a freaking genius!

Two days ago: SEC rules Mitchell ineligible. Faaar Pope immediately if not sooner.

Yesterday: Perhaps Mitchell can play after all. You alright, Coach.
This is the mindset and DNA of your most typical VILLAGE IDIOT. Their IQ is lower than the ounces found in a Mountain Dew can. Ignore them en mass. They are simply too stupid to talk to.

The sec knows they can’t win. And they’re doing a little bit of posturing to save face but in the end I’m sure their lawyers have informed them they can’t do anything. They also can’t circumvent the law by punishing the school because that indirectly punishes the player.
idk what will happen with the crooks at lsu and their shady shenanigans but I can say I 100% believe Mitchell will play here and they will not do a thing about it.

What's the deal with LSU? Are they doing something different than us? I honestly don't know. Just asking.

Guy making $45,000 in the G-League? That's a professional athlete.

Guy making $5,000,000 in the SEC? That's an amateur athlete.

The transfer portal rule was and is primarily a football rule. It was intended to keep other SEC schools from tampering with players during and after spring practice. The way it has been applied in the Mitchell scenario is ridiculous. And probably wouldn't be happening if he had signed with a different SEC team.
I completely agree. If he had signed with Florida making them an even bigger threat to win a title Sankey would not have said a word. One week after Mitchell to UK began to look good. Sankey sent out a memo to all schools reminding them of the Conference transfer policy and that he would enforce it. That was most certainly directed at Mitchell. Sankey was hoping he would just move on to another school. Sankey loves him a 10 loss UK. It fills all the other Arenas that sit empty when UK was dominating the conference.

On what basis are the players going to sue? They're being allowed to sign. Schools are allowed to have by laws that are mutually agreed upon that don't violate the law, which those don't.
Not being academically eligible is another such agreed upon rule, though the way this farce of college sports is headed, who knows how long that will last. Schools are free to play players who aren't acemdically eligible, and they have in the past, and they received penalties for doing so.

I'll save you some time and effort though, if you're doggedly determined to see professional athletes become eligible to play collegiate sports, you and I are never ever going to agree and I'm not going to expend any more time or effort on you trying to get you to see that. It's that simple. Peace.
South Carolinas QB admitted he won’t be taking any classes this year. I guess that’s one way to not fail a class.

Been trying to get actual signed pros to play. What they’re doing is wrong. Theres no argument to that. We’re just getting lumped in with them when it’s a whole separate issue

In the end MM will play. The NCAA is losing every case and I could see even the LSU pros getting to play with no ramifications.
At this point it seems ridiculous to act like there are rules. The rules went out the window when the NCAA set on their as NIL was becoming a thing. If they would have embraced this years ago they could have actually set guardrails. Now it will take congress to get involved to clean this mess up and they suck at everything too so that will be another fiasco.

You're pi$$ing into the wind. After 30 years of UK internet boards and multitudes of posters stating this fact over & over, many here will never acknowledge or understand. They think the college sports world revolves around UK hoops & that's the way the world really is to them.
