The way I read it is no they did not. They will allow the player to play but will still assess the penalties they outlined on the University for letting it happen.

Me too. The schools voted 16-0 for those rules. So schools are free to sign pro players, the SEC can't ban them due to court orders. However member institutions who have voluntarily entered into an agreed upon set of rules and penalties absolutely CAN impose those penalties.

Basically, you can sign them and we can't stop you. But you'll pay a steep price for doing it.

Anyway, more will come out on this making what is and isn't permitted with all of this. Eventually we'll have concrete definitions and answers. For now it's just a bunch of internet sleuths opining.

This in no way addresses Mitchell.

Kiffin and LSU.....I suppose it's nice to have a fresh villain. He rehabbed his image at Ole Miss and FAU and now here we are again with this clown.

I’ve grown to respect him. Why? Because he knows nobody cares about anybody else in this world, so he returns the favor and doesn’t give a crap about anybody else and does what makes him happy.

Anatomy of a crisis, Rafters edition.

Early last week: Pope signed Mark Mitchell. What a freaking genius!

Two days ago: SEC rules Mitchell ineligible. Faaar Pope immediately if not sooner.

Yesterday: Perhaps Mitchell can play after all. You alright, Coach.

This feels more and more solid like he is going to be good to go. SEC looks like dog **** and it feels like they've really screwed the pooch on any future oversight without massive public scrutiny. Feels like the Mega conference kinda lost the first real battle it ever faced.

I’m disappointed in the sec following the bigs lead so quickly.

I’ve said over the years that the sec doesn’t do anything in favor of Kentucky. We carried the league in basketball only to get the best upcoming team twice a year. And NO ONE, wants to see a successful Kentucky football.

Would be a weird thing for them to announce imo if that’s what it means. They would be “allowing” the player to play only in the sense of not physically preventing him from playing—which was never on the table in the first place.

Get off your computer and go outside and find a friend that is real person. You're well past creepy and have diseased this board with your "all things UK suk and when somethinng good happens to us or when we win I always vanish but if we win big I'm the biggest UK fan ever" troll schtick. Sad stuff. Bye now, Sally.

The TRO protects the school too. This is solely in the hands of the courts now. The SEC isn’t willing to fight this anymore. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze

The 2022 class getting a 5th year of eligibility shouldn't even be a battle.

Not sure this addresses the Mitchell not entering the portal in time though.

It would have to allow for him not entering the portal. Anything other would be unreasonable and appear vindictive. When a judge makes a decision , it's stands to reason other bylaws would need to flex in order to comply with the order.

The issue is that a single Judge's ruling can be overturned by a state higher courts. These single judge rulings will be appealed. The story is not over.

That's not how it works. Kentucky could sign LeBron James and the SEC also couldn't stop it except for incurring penalties.

And they will get smacked with the biggest lawsuit they can imagine. The players have all the cards since the NCAA pretty much let them a few years ago. The SEC is just posturing to not look like the balllessness they are.

I’ve only seen one idiot blame Pope for this. You can blame him for us needing a 4 so desperately bad at this point but you can’t blame him for trying to get Mitchell.

On what basis are the players going to sue? They're being allowed to sign. Schools are allowed to have by laws that are mutually agreed upon that don't violate the law, which those don't.
Not being academically eligible is another such agreed upon rule, though the way this farce of college sports is headed, who knows how long that will last. Schools are free to play players who aren't acemdically eligible, and they have in the past, and they received penalties for doing so.

I'll save you some time and effort though, if you're doggedly determined to see professional athletes become eligible to play collegiate sports, you and I are never ever going to agree and I'm not going to expend any more time or effort on you trying to get you to see that. It's that simple. Peace.

You can’t say you can do what you want but if you go to x school, we’re going to do this to x school. That isn’t legal. Not when the courts stated you can go to whatever school you want. For now at least.

MJ talked about it on KSR on Thursday I think it was and had a good analogy. Check it out if interested.

and what a straw man argument. Professionals? Define a professional? They get paid for their work? College hoopers are professional by definition. And no, I don’t consider someone who played summer league a few games for an NBA team to be a “professional”. Big difference between Lebron and Mark Mitchell.

Don’t get me started on euros who played “professional” since they were kids and can somehow just slide in to an NCAA/SEC team without a word from the hypocrites.

Peace with you my brother, no hard feelings. Just different opinions and I reckon that’s okay.

You're not disagreeing with me. I'm simply telling that guy, the default is the NCAA or SEC can't physically restrict any player from playing. They can only incur penalties, if there isn't legal protection.
Do you expect them to have security remove said “illegal” player? lol. Of course not. That would bring a whole nother can of worms.
