Why didn’t Mark Mitchell entered the transfer portal back in April?

three of his very own teammates off of the Missouri team that had completed their eligibility, all put themselves in to the transfer portal in April in hopes that the fifth year would be made available. Our own Denzel Aberdeen did the same thing. Many others did also such as Arkansas’s Malik Ewin and Florida’s Micah Handlogten. He must have been so confident in his own ability that he would make an NBA roster, but why not always have a back up plan or some type of insurance in case he wouldn’t?

Pretty sure all the rest you’ve mentioned had injuries or limited playing time or juco years, and were hoping for a waiver.

Jordan Pope is one of the few that entered for this reason.
So all 3 of his Missouri teammates had injuries?

So what? The fact remains that he had no eligibility remaining and therefore no reason to enter the portal. How hard is that to understand?

He thought he was going to be drafted. He had no intentions of ever playing college basketball again.

Plus he has a dumbass agent.

This. I think he was just so confident he was NBA bound that he didn’t see this backup plan as anything he might ever need.

Then got a rude awakening when the draft and summer league didn’t go as expected.

He hired his brother as his agent, nuff said. Injuries had nothing to do with the players that did it by the rules. Had he entered the portal while it was open, he wouldn't be in the shape he's in. His Missouri team mates, and numerous other players, did it the right way and are now eligible. He screwed up, and now wants the rules changed to accommodate he and his brothers stupidity.

Maybe the others got better advice than Mitchell did.
Bingo.

Mitchell didn't hire a good agent. He hired his inexperienced brother Brandon to be his agent. His brother has been using the 15% he makes off Mark to start and grow his own agency.

Had Mark just hired some random agent from CAA, he'd have been advised to enter the portal in April just to cover all his bases.

There was no rational reason for him to have been thinking about the college portal at that time.
Both sides can be true. Yes, he should have entered his name as a preemptive measure. Abeerden did; Trimble did, etc. But also, the timing of when one enters the transfer portal went away once the courts granted him elgibility. The stating of a player "must enter the transfer portal during the sport's normal time frame" should be disregarded after a player receives eligibility and has the portal re-opened for them.

I truly don't see how the rule holds up in court. I do believe either a) Sankey gives in or b) the court rules in Mitchell's favor because some arbitrary rule is being used outside of the scope of it's creation.

Looking at the media and rival fans, it's comical to see the "objective" stance because none want Mitchell to play at Kentucky. Other fans comments on this forum are proving the point that Kentucky + Mitchell is only a problem because it will make Kentucky a contender.

Well guess what, the college basketball world is about to find out that you don't mess with Kentucky and basketball. Pope and Batt should and will go scorched earth to make sure Mitchell can play.

I didn't say just injuries, but yes they all have a story.

Crews was a juco one year and only played 9 games in another season. Stone had season totals of just 13 games, 13 games, and 9 games and missed all of the year before last at WVU. Stone would be trying to play his 7th year, not unlike Kepnang. These two would be eligible under the old rules. Phillips only had 20 games at LSU his freshman year, but very limited minutes. He's had minor injuries his whole career too, but would've been looking at an Aberdeen-like waiver.

I love Chick Fil A, but I’m not gonna go there on Sundays hoping they miraculously change their policies. Instead I just go eat somewhere else. Same thing with Mitchell, why do something with zero guarantee of it working when you have another option

His agent was his brother. He has since retained other representation. His brother probably didn’t advise him too just in case. Other, more seasoned agents covered all bases

Isn’t it such a small thing to change though? It’s just common sense for Sankey to see all his buddies that did something stupid ( enter the portal with no eligibility) get to play, but he can’t. It’s just sour grapes and Sankey being petty. The inter conference transfer rule was put in place for Football. It was to stop players from going thru spring practice with a team. Find out they were buried on the depth chart. Then transfer to a program they would play against. Coaches would want to question them about our playbook, plays and players. That’s why the rule was adopted. It was never meant for something like this.

I'd have been first in line complaining the moment UNC's coach offered any former dook player in the transfer portal. Mark Mitchell, Nik Kamenia, Darren Harris, Jeremy Roach, Sean Stewart, TJ Power, Jaylen Blakes...

There is not a single dook transfer I've ever wanted to cheer for in UNC jersey. But that's because I consider dook to be our arch rival and I still believe that means something. You are free to cheer for whomever you want.

Duke is not our arch rival, so that's a false equivalence.
