Been a lot of debate about our farmers. I know a lot of them have been requesting this.

On the surface this seems like a great thing. Will ranchers be able to sell to customers? Inspections?

either way, I like the idea

What does this even mean?
Currently if you have a cow or other animal and butcher it yourself, you are not allowed to sell it to your neighbors.

It prevents a lot of "farm to table beef" if you will. I'm not sure how big of a deal it is but I know a lot of ranchers have been askinf for it for a long time.

There are also complaints of monopolies in meat packing industry, i think from both sides of the aisle.

As long as USDA inspection is involved it should be fine....

And that's the rub. It is exorbitantly expensive to have a food safe, USDA inspected meat packing facility, as it should be.

I truly don't know how much this will impact small farmers, but see the massive amount of meat being recalled from Argentina to see how big of an impact improperly butchered and packed meat has.

I see it the other way: locally butchered meat being cleaner and closer to what inspectors need. I would imagine a ranchers cares just a little bit more than some packing plant worker getting paid 20 an hour

if nothing else, it requires more people (employees) to do all these inspections

and we've seen a constant decline in that personnel for about a decade, with the largest drop in 2025

Not much,... Setting up a functional meat processing facility at scale is an extremely expensive proposition,... Anything that does happen here would very like be small in scale.
Yeah, agreed…that was my thinking as well. Seems like this doesn’t really do much.

I am all for this. However, if these smaller operations are going to take this on, hopefully they understand the liability.

I think I heard a podcast it was with an organic rancher I believe and RFK Jr. and they were talking about processing their own meat. It is actually cleaner to process their own meat vs. going to larger processors.

I buy beef from a farmer that is an owner of our company, he goes to the local butcher shop in town to have it done. It's much healthier (this butcher shop probably has FDA stuff I would assume otherwise they would be shutdown). Any case, the beef is processed and frozen right away. Large processors spray it with anti-microbial and package with gases to help preserve shelf life. I also learned that store bought hamburger for example could be a mix of 100 different animals taking the trimmings off of better cuts, where as local is purely that one animal.

I think I heard too that local / small butchers have less ecoli issues, etc. than the large processors because of mixing of ecoli with the whole process, the need to spray and wash the meat with antimicrobial etc, can miss.

So long story short this could be really good and healthier for America and possibly drive down costs and give more competition.

FDA is not involved with meat inspection,... USDA.
