Expecting us to dominate on the field without as much NIL support as the top teams is insane. What do you expect our AD to do in this world of CFB? I mean come on man. Our fan base wants incredible results and for us to do it on a shoe string budget. Makes sense. :cautious:

We have to spend on staff and facilities. We also have to spend on players - more than we are now.

Bunch of financial geniuses on this board that apparently are very familiar with running a multi-million dollar organization.
Lots of people in here have ran very successful athletic programs on XBox and PlayStation

I expect to go 3-30 against top 25 teams...that is it. We still haven't reached those heights.

DRIVING DONATIONS
Nebraska Athletics brought in a school-record $71.66 million in
donations in 2025-26, surpassing the previous mark of $71.29
million in 2024-25. Nearly 17,000 donors pushed support of the
Big Red to an all-time high. The donations helped the Huskers to
their best Learfield Directors’ Cup finish since 2001.

This is from Dannen's annual report today, he got 71 million in donations and 78 million from the Big Ten yet we're still poor and can't field a ranked team. Not including ticket and merch sales also. 🤔

The fact it barely beat the previous year is genuinely concerning.

But didn't Matt say last year we had everything we needed NIL wise to get the BEST players? One publication had zero NU portal guys in their top 100. So either we over paid, misjudged, or Matt was giving us a line of BS. 9 months later, and now they need more. NIL is important. I get that. But so is your ability to evaluate portal players, and develop the recruits you have. When you bring in 17 portal guys, your not developing anybody.

Unfortunately he said that before they figured out what the market ended up being. The inflation was remarkable.

Can you please pony up or get the **** out.
Your choice.
I am a good Christian and I give my money to helping people in need and not Matt Rhule. I can't believe some of you "Christ lovers" would donate charity to a losing college football program instead of helping people. Imagine what 80 million dollars could do for the state in terms of young childhood education, college readiness, technical training for young people, or just food, medical, and therapy for the poor. Pathetic but predictable.

As far as I can tell, there are about 50-60 impact players available in the portal in a given year. And about 200 who can help shore up a weak area on a team but guys who are not NFL caliber. You have to keep in mind, the REASONS a player hits the portal. 1. They want more money that their current school can or will give them. 2. They are not as good as they think they are and their school lets them walk. 3. They are buried on the depth chart behind legitimate NFL level guys and want to play...AKA cash in on NIL. And even if we can match an offer from Oregon, USC, Miami, climate then becomes a consideration. Guys from the South are not excited to come here for that reason alone. You can talk NIL till your blue in the face, but the simple facts are, unless Uncle Warren drops a huge donation on NU, we are never going to be at the top 10-20 of the NIL money list. That is just a fact.

The way forward is to develop players you recruit, win some games that matter, put players into the NFL, and rebuild your brand football wise.

Don’t want to hear your crying and I do both. It’s my money and I prefer to donate more to Husker Athletics.

“I am a good Christian …” Ha! You sound like a pretentious, emotionally retarded douche, which doesn’t back up your claim. And aren’t you the one who bragged about being a fatty that sits on their *** all day? That’s not Christiany either. Maybe you meant you’re a good Christian in the same way Biden claimed he was as a good catholic? In that case, I get it.

“Right now it’s time to turn it up. We didn’t do it because we didn’t have to. Today we have to. There’s a fine line. Depending on where you stand on that line, we either push across it or we don’t push far enough.”

I don't think anybody wants us to compete with Indiana, Oregon, OSU. People want us to be able to take advantage of opportunities for success and for charity given to Rhule to be met with results. Last year we had a very soft schedule...FOUR of our toughest games happened to have the head coach missing for the game...we finished 1-3 in those games, losing by an average of 20 ppg. The only other difficult game was against Iowa, who was just above average. A competent well-coached team with a veteran qb, and the best rb in the conference should have won 10 games, ended the year strong. We didn't have to compete against the best in the sport and still lost 6 games. That is where the anger comes from. Even this year we have SEVEN layups...a competent well-coached team should easily win 8. That should be expectation in year four..30 million in handouts to the coach.

I mean isn't that kind of the goal of the coach. They give you millions, you kind of just hope they shut you down and still give you millions. Imagine being a doctor, lawyer, teacher, police officer. You get hired...they hand you your 10 million you would make over your career on the first day...and then expect you to show up to work and perform for 30 years in a high stress environment when you have already been paid. The compensation system is completely broken. And it isn't like "College football coach" is the most moral position to start with.

Can't really blame him. He had an existential crisis and breakdown in Carolina...his career was in jeopardy...and then a dufus from the middle of nowhere calls him and offers him 80 million guaranteed. He came to Nebraska and realized everybody was as dumb as the AD, including the new AD. He wasn't equipped to win, as he said "it wasn't the best job, it was the right job". So he has pretty much spent his time lining his pocket. Lol

I don't think evaluating the compensation model of college football is a regurgitated thought. I think it is a valid conversation. Should hyper-competitive psychos be given 80 million upfront to do a job that requires huge personal, physical sacrifice,,,and should we be surprised when they hire all of their friends and then start their own NIL fund, podcast, and push for an extension instead of actually trying to win. They already won the day they signed the 80 million guaranteed.

Would you feel comfortable working with your lawyer if they were already paid 10 million the first day they started, and if they got fired they would get paid another 10 million?

“We are not flirting with the top of the league when it comes to our player support, whether NIL or rev share or cumulative dollars. Part of our challenge right now is to put us in the same position at the top of the league as we are with facilities and infrastructure and other investments.”

“The No. 1 item on the job description for my job today is ability to generate revenue,” Dannen said. “I will say I do almost feel like we spend more time apologizing for doing the job that athletics requires in 2026.

“If we don’t do our job, our future is severely limited. No one’s doing this because they like having people upset and calling and yelling and threatening. That’s not the way this is done.

“We’re doing it to put the University of Nebraska athletic program in a better position for success. Today the economic piece is much more relevant and prevalent than at any time in our past.

“But let’s not forget. We had suites before anyone else. We were finding ways to generate revenue before anybody else did. Which is why we don’t have debt. In some ways, we went 25 years and rested on that.

“Right now it’s time to turn it up. We didn’t do it because we didn’t have to. Today we have to. There’s a fine line. Depending on where you stand on that line, we either push across it or we don’t push far enough.”
Everything is all about money. Osborne won and did not need a lot of money. Granted things have changed and not for the better the past 20 years. I see no way states like Nebraska, Kansas, Wisconsin, etc can match the alumni funding that comes from Texas, LSU, A&M, etc. It's called OIL money. As Eddie Chiles, a Texas oil man back in the 1980's once said, "Don't have you an oil well, well go out and get you one"! Eddie was once the owner of the Texas Rangers

You aren't wrong but it isn't as simple as that. Nebraska fans have plenty of money to finish in the top 25 every year. There just isn't pressure to spend it well. There isn't any accountability. And it is a feedback loop. Coaches show up, overpaid with too much leverage, they look around and nobody really cares what they do or if they win for 2-3 years, the entire university system is filled with lazy, cozy long term professionals...nobody takes accountibility for the losing of the last 25 years and the coach finds resistance, decides he is already paid..threatens to leave for a better job, gets an extension and rides it out until the program hits another rock bottom. It is culture more so than money.

To win Nebraska will have to think outside the box. An unknown coach, an investor board which demands profits from donations, a short incentive based contract outside of the agent cartel for both coaches and AD, a unique offense which needs limited NIL, spending all NIL on fast/talented defense. return on donations if season goals not met. Something unique or we will just be the worst of the same.
