Week 1 - Games of the Week Predictions

Bennington (0-0) at Elkhorn North (0-0)
- this matchup is intriguing to me simply based off the fact that Bennington is making the jump up to A. Elkhorn North is established, lots of talent (Bennington, too, of course) but EN has been in the trenches longer. Should be a fun game.
Elkhorn North: 21 - Bennington 12

Class B
Gretna East (0-0) at Norris (0-0)
- What game, in week 1, is better than this? Maybe none.. Firepower all over the field. 2 good OL groups. QBs that can make plays - both appeared to have a solid summer.
Gretna East: 35 - Norris: 31

Class C1
Pierce (0-0) at Douglas County West (0-0)
- There might be a better game or 2 in C1.. Not sure.. However, all eyes on Pierce. I have a sneaky suspicion they're back. Like, C1 State Champs, type of back... Stay tuned.
Pierce: 42 - DC West: 20

Class C2
Columbus Scotus (0-0) at Hartington Cedar Catholic (0-0)
- Sorry, Scotus, HCC wasn't actually punished. They just re-arranged practice days, didn't "lose practice" (all per the thread below, haha).
HCC: 27 - Scotus: 14

Class D1 (couldn't just pick 1)
Crofton (0-0) at Pender (0-0)
- Crofton looking to get back to the promise land (and they just might). Pender trending up, hey, nice facilities.. The ground and pound is just too much.
Crofton: 40 - Pender 30

Cross County (0-0) at Thayer Central (0-0)
- Cross County, back down to 8-man after a short stint in C2. Thayer Central coming off a great season in D1 last year, however, replacing several key pieces, especially some size up front. I think this one could go either way. Last with the ball wins?
Cross County: 34 - Thayer Central: 28

Class D2
Howells-Dodge (0-0) at Bloomfield (0-0)
- Old school, tough, physical, tradition, fun.
HD: 42 - Bloomfield: 26

Class D3
Burwell (0-0) at Anselmo-Merna (0-0)
- Cowboy bowl.. Two contenders in the deep, deep, class of D3. Early litmus test. I think this one will leave some bumps and bruises. Anselmo-Merna takes advantage of a forced TO or 2..

Watching Crofton and Sandy Creek closely. Both have very good week 1 opponents. I exprct both to pull away comfortably in the second half. But you never know.

On another note. I want EMF to tear Fairbury a new one. Disgraceful that Fairbury jump down from C1 to 8 man despite having a higher enrollment than any eligible C2 team. I would be embarrassed to be a Fairbury alum.

Crofton did what I expected them to against a very solid Pender team. I was surprised to see the Sandy Creek score. Didn't expect it to be quite as close as it ended up being, with that lineman from Sutton being out. Anyone have a recap on that one? Didn't expect to see 20 points put up against their defense.

I was at the sandy creek game. It was not close. Sandy Creek scored on every possession within 2.5 minutes, there was a running clock because they were up 35+ by mid 3rd quarter.
And pulled their starters near the top of the 4th quarter. Sutton kept their starters in the entire game and ran up three quick scores at the end. Trust me when I say they could have piled it on a lot heavier.

I was super disappointed in sutton's coaches, from the first snap of the game they ran the clock down to almsost zero before snapping. Essentially trying to limit sandy creek getting the ball. SC only had 3 possessions for 7 min in the first half and were up 22-0. I really wish Sutton gave their kids a chance to actually try and play and not try to prevent a blowout. They were running the clock down before the snap when they were down 30.

When you are overmatched - sometimes that is your best chance to win. Try to limit your opponent as many possessions as possible to give your team the best chance to win. Don’t know much about either team but keep hearing how good Sandy Creek is, so my guess is that’s what Sutton was trying to do.

You're right. Sutton was supposedly number four ranked in 8 man. I know they were missing a good player. But overmatched is definitely a understatement in that one. Sutton was no match in the trenches, and sandy creek's quarterback is as good as advertised. That is one damn talented team for 8 man.

Considering Fairbury lost by 62 points in an 8-man games, probably made sense for them to drop down from 11-man. Shoot, with that score they probably should be dropped down to D2 or D3....

Because they conceded the game from the first snap. Playing prevent offense from snap 1 all the way to when they were down 30. Still burning 25 seconds per snap. The strategy gave their kids no chance. From a fan perspective with no skin in the game, it was baffling. Ive never seen anything like it.

It may have kept the better team on the sideline but it kept them from ever gaining a rhythm themselves. It was just an awful strategy for a team thats suppose to be number 4 in all of 8 man. Take some chances. Be creative. Anything other than that.

First of all they are not necessarily the 4th best team in all of 8 man football. There are teams in D2 and possibly D-3 that would beat them. 2nd I am sure that their coaches know better than some dipshit on a message board what chances they had in the game.
