LSU's brass even voted in favor of passing these rules. The member institutions voted 16-0 in favor of adopting them.
Which is why it is highly unlikely this gets beaten in court by a player suing to become eligible at an SEC school. Sorry LSU players, your school just told you they don't think you should be eligible. In fact they just empowered the SEC commissioner to severely punish their own school if you ever get into a game at LSU.

I'll be interested to see what other conferences pass similar rules by unanimous votes.

It was a 16-0 unanimious vote by the SEC schools. That puts them in a great position to enforce these rules.

Let's say an LSU athlete sues. The judge will look him in the eye and say "LSU literally just voted for these rules. Why should you be exempt from the rule if your school believes you should be held to it?"
The rules are very loosely worded. Easy holes to poke in them. I guess there could be a more finely described version of it. Like who decides what is and isn’t an actual contract. And if you didn’t enter your name in the draft how can you withdraw your name?

While some talking heads ran their months yesterday, all they did was make it clear they didn't know what they are talking about.

Players with expired eligibility are automatically entered in the NBA draft. There is no mechanism for them to remove their names. So the SEC rules about not removing your name from the draft are clearly not referring to those players.

To put it even more clearly, Mark Mitchell is not impacted by these new SEC rules at all. His eligibility is still entirely dependent on his Louisville court case, and the SEC interconference transfer rule.

And if that’s the case he will be eligible

Considering it's the wild west now in collegiate sports, I have to wonder why Sankey is arbitrarily deciding to be heavy handed and put SEC schools at a disadvantage in relation to other conferences.

He doesn't meet the SEC's rule about being in the portal by April if you want to be immediately eligible at a new SEC school. A rule UK voted to implement. I still think that is the biggest roadblock for Mitchell. Because at the end of the day Mitchell could have transferred anywhere. He chose UK knowing full well that UK voted to implement an interconference transfer rule that leaves him ineligible for '26-'27. That's going to be tough to beat if the SEC enforces it. A judge is likely to ask why he should be exempt from a rule that UK supports, and why Mitchell would have to just picked from the hundreds of schools that didn't have that particular eligibility rule as a roadblock.

Every conference is adopting this.
Talking about the previously existing SEC rule stating a player transferring between 2 SEC schools must be in the portal by April. A rule UK voted for. Mitchell did not meet that deadline.

As Mitchell's case now stands, the SEC transfer rule is his biggest roadblock to playing for UK this season. At any non-SEC school he's completely clear of that issue.

If I’m Pope I just try to serve my full half season penalty at the beginning of the year. Be ready to go for conference season and let’s roll.
Pope seems to be pretty cautious in general so my opinion is they thought this through and believe the risk is minimal. Personally I think the new rules collaspe in a court challenge.

The prevailing sentiment is the new SEC rules will stand up to court challenge. 16-0 uninamous vote by the SEC schools. A player can simply go to some other school not constrained by these rules.

And again, these new rules don't impact Mark Mitchell.

All of this is downstream of the 5 in 5 rule, these guys did not have the opportunity to decide what to do in the spring, but their "decision" is being held against them. Mitchell specifically did not sign a contract, and could not have "withdrawn" from the draft even if he wanted to.

I’m not sure why people say Pope seems cautious. He’s pretty ambitious and forward thinking, kind of seems like a risk taker to me. Think his personality and demeanor are why he gets labeled the way he does.

It’s past time to take a stand against these bastards.

“When in the course of human events…”
Oh buddy, there's at least 1000 things going on in America right now that needs to be stood up to before we start a revolution to get college athletes even more money and more free classes. I mean, UK literally just voted for these new SEC rules.

That was covered in the TRO. Nobody is worried about the sec transfer rule.

You are wildly incorrect with that statement.
I’m not worried about the transfer rule. It’s already been taken care of internally. From what I’ve heard through some aau coaches and other coaching friends Missouri not being against it helps Mitchell and the portal thing. It’s a rule sankey can bypass easily if no contesting of it from the previous school.

That means jack if what they are doing is illegal in the eyes of the judges. SEC doesn’t trump the government.

That’s good to know Missouri isn’t fighting it. That would be a bad look if they did. I’m sure if he knew he had a 5th year, he would transfer regardless.

Schools can't sign away someone's rights on their behalf.

I think the schools have something up their sleeves personally. LSU reportedly already backed out the vote and abstained. That makes me think maybe UK was told Mitchell is good.
Let’s freaking hope man. This is all just too complicated and should have never have been a thing If the NCAA had a lick of sense.

I meant that he seems to hold his cards tight to his vest . Given his past comments on waiting on various rulings from the ncaa etc I would imagine him and the administration must feel confident that Mitchell will weather any challenges. I'm glad he signed him it's a great pickup for us.
