People thought I was awful for supporting local businesses and local workers during the time the real king, Lord Pritzker, had the state locked down tight, because I could catch and spread Covid.

OMG ... federal law affects Texas exactly the same AS IT IMPACTS THE OTHER 50 STATES. It cannot make Texas more or less attractive than California, because it impacts them equally. (There's some ways this isn't 100% correct, but it usually involves federal spending being directed to the state, so there's no reason to assume Paxton or Talarico would be "better" here)

I thought you geniuses understood politics. You tell us you do all the time. But when we actually get to the details, you guys are completely lost.

Bottom line, James Talarico in the Senate will not impact Texas vis-a-vis competitiveness/attractiveness with California, because they are in a national legislature. Bemusingly, this is why the "Ted Cruz went to Mexico during the power outage" thing was so laughable. Summarizing a Historic 2025 Crime Report with Charts & Tables​

The FBI released its 2025 Crime in the United States report on a Friday afternoon which wasn’t there fault but also was super great for getting a ton of attention on the fact that murder fell at the fastest pace ever recorded to the lowest rate recorded since the FBI started its modern estimates.

It wasn’t just the US murder rate that has reached a historic low though as clearly seen in the below table of every crime type.


There’s another way to visualize how far things have come though — bar charts. I think it is helpful to look at the crimes that have fallen the most over the last few years and truly see the change through the magic of bar charts. To do that, I highlighted 2025 as well as the last time each crime’s rate was as low as it was in 2025.
Here’s violent crime, lowest since 1968:


The murder rate, lowest since at least 1960:


Robbery, also the lowest since at least 1960:


The property crime, lowest since at least 1960:


The burglary rate, lowest since at least 1960:


The lowest theft rate since 1962:


And the lowest motor vehicle theft rate since 1961:

All available evidence points to another large drop in nearly every crime type occurring in 2026. The recently released Crime Index sample of 590 agencies has murder down 17 percent, violent crime down 6 percent and property crime down 10 percent through June 2026.



This year is on track to be the fourth straight year with a double-digit percentage point drop in murder. It may not set a new record, but the drop in murder this year will likely exceed any year prior to 2023 in terms of the largest drop in murders from one year to the next.



Finally, I have to point out that clearance rates for murder, robbery and burglary were the highest in decades. The robbery clearance rate interests me a ton given that the 1960s clearance rates aren’t particularly reliable.



Summing things up, I would say that 2023, 2024 and 2025 were all historic in terms of declining crime and 2026 is looking like it will be another historic year. Sometimes all it takes to see history is a couple of bar charts (with some tables sprinkled in).

So correct, James Talarico will have nothing to do with governing Texas. Almost nothing specific to Texas will occur because Talarico is in the Senate (other than him being elected from Texas). Individuals in Texas are impacted by federal law, of course.

This is basic federalism to me. (You would never something like "James Talarico governs North Dakota," I think we can agree on that.)

I realize that politics is your identity, and you can't handle the thought of someone you perceive as "to the right" betraying the GOP. I on the other hand can't believe what the GOP currently is or that intelligent people defend it.

By the way, do you think I don't understand what the Senate is? That's your argument. That I don't know the Senate impacts federal policy. It's obvious in the context of the discussion - where I specifically address why Talarico impacts California and Texas equivalently - the point I am making. 2) He says he is for a big welcome mat in the US for immigrants. He tries to say he also is for secure borders but it is careful words chosen by his PR consultants. Has Texas got enough room for millions more now legal immigrants, plus Californians?
3) He will vote with the herd to put DEI in the military and overturn merit
4) He will vote with the herd for anything else the leadership tells them to, just look at the 2 Dem moderate senators in AZ. They vote the party line.

I didn't mis-state anything. You are trying to create an interpretation that obscures what I thought was an obvious point. Talarico/Paxton is a national office, and Texas has surged because its state-level policy is largely successful. The whole discussion revolved around a comparison between states themselves.

I get the narrative that wants Texas voters to view Paxton/Talarico as if it were a Governor and AG race, one which is particularly salient on the right. It's just not one.

It would probably be preferable for Texas to have Talarico/Paxton running for Insurance Commissioner or something. Senate is an important job in national politics (only 100 Senators). But let's be real here, it's far more important for Texas' future who wins the Governor race and probably the LG/AG races.

There are tons of "party reasons" to vote for Paxton over Talarico. I don't sit around and argue that there aren't. The Supreme Court is one, the fact that both parties don't have much dissent when their team goes too far right or left is another, you could add plenty more.

I am going to quibble a bit here. Texas has benefitted tremendously on the economic front from immigration (including illegal immigration). Who do you think is building houses/taking care of lawns/cleaning houses/cooking food/so on in Texas (and Arizona)?

There's a long debate to be had about immigration, the best system. But immigration is definitely a major part of the economic rise of the Southwest.
