1-2 is exactly what Big Game historically did against those type of teams. I guess what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander?
So you are admitting that you don't expect better results from Campbell? But Franklin was so inept and Campbell does so much more with less. Going 1-2 against 3 loss teams isn't excellence at the highest level.
Nor does it properly represent the "history of this program." Neither Michigan, USC or Washington project to be top 3 teams in the Big Ten. Of course those teams have typical conference schedules.
If talent acquisition doesn't improve the real pain will begin 2027-28.

Lots of talk and it’s easy for him to say in 2026 but the landscape and toxicity was very, very different for BOB and Franklin.
In other words shut up and win games.
We had the leadership from Hell if we can even call that leadership. It was actually a hate filled powerplay.

The biggest strength of this team is its schedule. I'd like some honest participants here to estimate the season record if PSU had Ohio State's Schedule (Texas, Indiana, Michigan, USC, Oregon). Or Michigan's schedule (Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana, Oklahoma).
It's easy to approach a season with confidence when you have 9 teams "without a pulse" and 3 teams you claim are big games but all could have 3 or more losses at season's end. I'll wait for history to repeat itself in 2027-28.
Keep in mind, I've maintained for years that every win is to be celebrated. But, I've converted to the BWICAC philosophy and I'm only counting "big game" wins. Cue the popcorn.
Franklin couldn't beat UCLA or Northwestern last year so...yeah

Actually, HCJF made serious hay against teams like that.

Over the last 10 years HCJF won around 70% of his games against ranked - but outside of the top 10 - teams.
And actually had a well above 500 record (I think around 60%) against all ranked teams not in the top 5. (keep in mind, there are about 6-7 coaches in all of P4 with 500+ records vs ranked teams - so HCJF's record against such teams would have to be among the top few in the nation)

HCJF's hurdle wrt wins-and-losses (and what raised the ire against him among much of the fan base) was the inability to beat the teams in the top 5 (I don't recall the exact record vs "top 5" teams, but something like 1-12 or thereabouts).

The current schedule (and, IIRC, the 2027 schedule) would have been tailor made for HCJF.

Here are some choice quotes in this thread..
"The biggest strength of this team is its schedule"

This is kind of like getting a comment from your boss..."Your biggest strength is you usually have a smile on your face."

I don't even know what to say about that.

Then another beauty...

What??

So what if USC or Michigan has two losses and we handed them one of them? Is that not a big game because they have two losses? What if we beat Michigan but then Bryce Underwood gets hurt after our game and Michigan loses close games to Indiana, Oregon and OSU?? Is our Michigan game not a Big Win?? What if we beat Michigan but Bryce Underwood does not get hurt but they lose close games to Indiana, OSU and Oregon then our win is not a Big game win? But Michigan is still a top 15 team win because their close losses are to all playoff teams? I'm so confused!!

Is everyone following because there will be a quiz at the end of the season after we moved the proverbial goal posts 20 times during the season as to not give Campbell any credit for anything.

So there is a possibility we could go 12-0 but have no Big wins??? Inquiring minds want to know?? That means we don't have to give Campbell any credit and can say BGJ would have done just as well.

Everyone beware that this could happen and if it does everyone should know we have 0 Big wins and Campbell gets zero credit because he won all easy games. Let's set the record now. You can't treat my hero, BGJ, like that and get away with it!!

I wonder if this same poster gladly counted our wins vs SMU or Boise State as a Big wins?? USC in 2024 on the road could not possibly be a big win then...oh wait maybe it was??

What history repeats itself in 2027-28? The history in 2026? And is it bad history, good history, luck history? What is it? Not winning any Big games history? Getting lucky and winning one Big game but we got lucky so we don't count it as a Big game history?

The season cannot start soon enough so we can begin the fire Campbell campaign.

Beating a 3 loss team is not a big game. There are 9 teams "without a pulse " on the schedule. Not my definition. This has been the longstanding position of the long suffering BWICAC. It's only fair to be consistent.
As for the strength of this team being the schedule. That's my opinion. My reasoning is the absence of Oregon, Ohio State and Indiana on the schedule. This means PSU at best plays the #4 best team in the conference.

Results will be all that matter.

If we've learned anything here, it's that 10-win seasons are something to sneeze at and that only big games count.

12-0 or go home.
I used to be happy with a 10-win season and a New Year's Day Bowl game. Not any more. I now see how Penn State fans demand perfection. FIRE MATT CAMPBELL if he loses one game this year!!! Penn State fans demand and deserve perfection and a national championship EVERY YEAR!!!!

"We're trying to win football games, don't misunderstand that," said Paterno. "But I don't want it to ruin our lives if we lose. I don't want us ever to become the kind of place where an 8-2 season is a tragedy. Look at that day outside. It's clear, it's beautiful, the leaves are turning, the land is pretty and it's quiet. If losing a game made me miserable, I couldn't enjoy such a day."

Screw that thinking. After seeing how Penn State fans were, it's win at all cost. Paterno didn't have his priorities straight.

As long as tOSU remains what they are the rest of the conference will be fighting over table scraps.

Indiana caught lightening in a bottle last year. We're not close.
That doesn't matter to Penn State fans. We're to beat Ohio State and Michigan and now Oregon and USC every year. Because WE ARE PENN STATE DAMMIT!

I agree! It's something we were never going to do with Fraudlin. We must strive to do better than the last regime did under that snake oil salesman.

I an so sick of the stupid “what Penn State Fans deserve” drivel - you must be pretty thick to not understand that this program aspires to be competitive with the likes of OSU. This is not a fan issue - we are along for the ride. Why would we pay a coach millions to beat cupcakes - we already did that with Franklin but he wasn’t hired for that but that is what he was - we will see if Matt gets it done - time will tell. Hopefully the Franklin Fanboys figure that one out or just slide over to a VT Fanboy.

Dozens of schools pay their coaches "millions." Penn State's coach isn't even top ten in salary...nor is it's NIL war chest. Better watch out for those cupcakes.

After reading most of the posts, Dear Lord please let the season begin.
I personally look forward to the Campbell era in-game threads. They are so comical year after year that my teenage son sits with me and reads them with me and laughs when posters go off the deep end about what’s happening in the game. How many times we fired and anointed Franklin in the same thread. I am sure it will be the same this season. The first time we punt against Marshall, we will be re-hiring Franklin back into the hc position and sending Campbell back to Iowa St in that thread.

Those happy to see Franklin leave will never want to rehire him. Campbell could go 0-36 over the next 3 years and James still had to go.
Game threads will consist of...
Those that love Franklin and hate Campbell
Those that hate Franklin and therefore love Campbell until they hate him
Those that freak out regardless
Those that try to tell everyone to relax (I'll do that plus explain its not always the QB's fault lol)
