I know, it sounds like a joke, but is it?

"Trump’s speech prompted Steve Bannon, his former political strategist, to predict the US president will declare a state of emergency on national security grounds to 'protect' elections."

Trump laying groundwork to impose national emergency by sowing election distrust

President’s speech, declassification of documents and heightened claims of noncitizen voting have experts concerned

A series of moves by Donald Trump’s administration to sow doubt in the integrity of US elections have intensified concern among voting experts – and sparked hope among election deniers – that it could declare a national emergency.

The White House and US federal agencies have released a string of documents this summer – including disputed analyses of alleged voting by noncitzens and historical intelligence memos – stoking expectations that the US president could move to exert greater control over November’s US midterm elections.

Trump used a primetime television address in July to claim – again – that US elections were vulnerable to foreign manipulation, and repeat the lie that the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Joe Biden, was stolen.

Trump’s speech prompted Steve Bannon, his former political strategist, to predict the US president will declare a state of emergency on national security grounds to “protect” elections.

“Take your No 2 pencil out,” Bannon, a rightwing commentator, said on his War Room video podcast on 29 July. “It’s coming. It’s coming. Just block the last week of August out. It’s coming.”

While Trump and his allies could try to use a national emergency declaration to delegitimize results of November’s results, experts say such a declaration would not supersede the constitutional restrictions on executive power on election administration. No president has ever attempted to invoke an emergency to assert control over voting.

Asked earlier this month by Wayne Allyn Root, a rightwing broadcaster, if he would “declare a national security emergency for elections”, Trump notably did not shoot down the idea.

“Let me just say, stranger things have happened, OK?” the president told Real America’s Voice, a rightwing cable channel. “I’ll leave it at that.”

The administration is “trying to lay the groundwork to declare some sort of emergency to nationalize elections”, said Aria Branch, a partner at the Elias Law Group, who led a lawsuit blocking Trump’s previous executive orders on election administration. “I think the president is looking for any opportunity to do that.”

do our national elections need protecting??

I realize that wouldn't stop an executive order from trump, but aren't all these complaints about elections a little (or a lot) overblown?

1500 fraudulent votes out of a billion votes over 40 years. Our elections were extremely safe…until the crybaby authoritarian showed up in American politics.

Are you suggesting Trump wouldn't do something crazy??? Trump would do anything to keep them from investigating his corruption and you know it. Where have you been the last 6 years?

Is this already up on Kalshi? I don't gamble and don't know how Kalshi works, but I'd like to see that. Can you provide a link?
TBH, I cant remember what I typed in to get to the site. I think I asked something to the effect of Kalshi and trump cancelling the 2026 election and up popped something headlined kalshi and showed 3% yes and 98% no

I'm not a gambler so I'm out of my league. I imagine there's some app

No, I would never bet on something like "would trump do something crazy" any more than I would bet that Trump would do something sensible.

The man is chaos uncontrolled. But, I don't want to jump to a conclusion and I'm pretty sure people are already working on lawsuits .

I just don't think any executive order (or anything else for that matter) is needed. Our elections system seems fine to me, and as someone else posted, we do have ineligible people vote, but to the best of my knowledge, no election results have been impacted.

I think you’re a bit naive. Should it take lawsuits to force Trump to follow the law?

99% yes. Almost all the honest Republican's were purged by Trump & MAGA. They aren't even allowed to say Trump lost rhe 2020 election. It's very sad, really.
We're free to say trump lost in 2020 but we all know that didn't really happen 😂

He won’t, but he will put his paramilitary around the polling places that can swing elections and de facto cause people to not vote

Ned forgive me but you are way way behind on this issue. US elections have huge holes that allow massive fraud to occur.
I might well be behind, I'll concede that. But I have yet to see where any of the illegitimate voters have turned an election. And, I take the same position on the machine/ballot fraud as I do on the Trump Epstein implications, I.e., it's easy to make accusations and while they might well be true, until there's some definitive criminal charge and conviction, then the accusations are are just that accusations.

I proposed before,we could do away with a lot of the angst about elections if we just had a 5 year mandatory sentence for voter/voting fraud.

Except Trump won't release the Epstein files and Dominion has won/settled multiple lawsuits, including against Fox News, on defamation.

Again it's just Ned being some obtuse moron to play both sides.

Ned it appears you have the attitude that nothings going on unless there are arrest actions taken. You are assuming people of integrity have been running our government and that fraud is rare because all these folks are honest and trustworthy.

President Trump is letting everyone know what occurred but if nothing happens related to accountability then its a moot point.

well just so we're talking about the same things here...there have been accusations about voter fraud other than dominion voting machines....and if I'm not mistaken the Trump Doj has released about 3 million pages of Epstein files...and so far no charges or prosecutions...

Scrubby was right again

They may ultimately rule that way but you need to stop listening to Benny Johnson

“If the Postal Service’s final rule harms the states, they may challenge that rule,” the court said in its order.

The Supreme Court’s decision did not address the legality of Trump’s executive order, only the timing of the challenge to it. Trump for years has made baseless claims about widespread voter fraud while specifically attempting to undermine confidence in mail voting.

“The court’s disposition of this application does not mean that any measure taken by the government to implement the order will necessarily be lawful,” the court wrote. “On that score, time will tell.”
