Pizzzzza, my wife and I rode out and went to the SG game. SG kid #6 is an athlete. Best player on the field for either team, by far.
Southern Gap is an absolute beautiful facility. We got to tour the school, and there is no question in my mind that it is the best planned high school in Virginia. Very few people in Buchanan wanted to lose their high schools, and I fully understand that. But what they have built is “opportunity” for their kids. The career path programs they have instituted, and the physical infrastructure to support them, will serve the area well for decades to come.
A couple of really neat things about the football field. No track around the field, (track is a separate, stand alone complex), puts the fans on top of the action. The field was purposely built in a “bowl”, which gives a true stadium feel to the facility. The stadium is literally connected to the high school. The concessions, press booth, coach’s areas, restrooms, etc. are all part of the high school building and are up and overlooking the field.
The game was pretty good for an early season game. Holston surprised me. SG came out and scored in three plays, and stopped Holston just as quick when they kicked off to them. But then Holston began playing a lot better. Penalties at the worst possible times began to affect both teams, but it became very competitive as the first half wore on. Halftime score was 14-6, but could have easily been tied. SG #6 picked off a pass in the end zone that would have been an easy TD. #6 timed it perfectly, and stretched out at the last second and caught the ball literally as it was in the hands of the receiver.
And let me tell you about the crowd. Unbelievable. Had to be 5000+ there. Cars were parked at least 3/4 of a mile along the entrance road. And yes, they do have tons of parking around the school.
And the view, unbelievable. Of course, when you are literally on a mountain top, you know the view is going to be spectacular. And it is.
One more score from last night. On a night when Kenston Forest honored one of it’s most dedicated and loved supporters that recently passes away, KF beat Broadwater Academy 63-8.

Greenbrier Christian Academy Varsity Boys Football team won their game against Rappahannock County High School by a score of 43-0.
A consolidated school bringing a community together? My goodness. We need more of that in this world. Sounds amazing. Destination viewing for sure for the people in that region.
And I bet when they start making the playoffs, that their home games will be rocking even more. About a five hour drive from me, but I need to put this in my things to do list.
Dinwiddie, you are hardcore dude to drive all the way from there down to Buchanan County. We (Graham) will play Southern Gao next year as the Grundy Golden Wave returns home to the Southwest District like it was in for many decades before Grundy High lost population and dropped to Class 1. It's not Grundy anymore, it's Southern Gap consisting of Grundy, Council, Hurley, and Twin Valley High, but to me when we play Southern Gap next year, it's still Grundy.
I don't have any details or score to report but I had a brief conversation today with some Waynesboro people and they told me that Rocktown "rocked" them pretty good in their scrimmage last night. I assume the scrimmage was played at Waynesboro.
So that may mean that the expectations for the Little Giants may not be all that great this year after all. As for Rocktown, I think they took their lumps that first year in most sports, but as they establish their identity, they are only going to get tougher.

We are headed out to Union next month. We were going on Sept 12th to see them take on your boys, but a conflict with my schedule came up. So we are going the following Friday.
We will go see Liberty-Bedford this week. Then, staying close to home on the 4th, going to Central of Lunenburg game.
‘Not sure on the rest of the dates, but going to try to catch Clarke County on a Friday and Handly on a Saturday. Plan to catch a game on the Eastern Shore, moth likely Northampton County. Louisa is high on the list, and so is Magna Vista.
I saw the Northwood Stadium when we were in Saltville today. I was impressed. Fairly high capacity seating.

Union/Graham would be a must see game, but I'm afraid that Union/Tazewell will not be.
Tazewell appears to be very down this year.
Yeah, that’s why I originally planned to go out your way on the 11th, but I just couldn’t make it work. I doubt that Tazewell will be very competitive, but that’s secondary to why I want to make the trip. I want to say hi to my old friend Coach Harless, see Union live, see Bullitt Field, and just enjoy SWVa.
