Yes it’s very apples and oranges in some functional senses, okay most functional senses. But when you stand way back and look at it, in a lot of ways adding Mark Mitchell to this team would be statistically very similar to adding Otega Oweh back to this team. From last year:

Minutes:

MM 33.8 OO 32.8

MM 9.8/57.1 OO 10.2/51.4

3 PT Shots/%

MM 1.5/38.8 OO 3.8/33.3

FTA/%

MM 8.1/66.9 OO 6.0/73.1

Boards OFF/DEF/TOT

MM 1.7/3.5/5.2 OO 0.9/3.9/4.8

Assists/Turnovers

MM 3.6/2.1 OO 2.7/2.1

Points

MM 18.3 OO 18.6

OO was great and carried that poor roster. Blaming that team sucking on him is just ignorant.

Having an Oweh type player but at the 4 position would fit this team really well. The only slight concern I have with Mitchell is at time he gets a little Mo Dioubate about his game and just forces offense.

Sure take him off the team and that team doesnt finish above .500

What a goofy take
Never understood the Oweh hate. Very efficient player, 47% from the field on 14.0 FGA per game. Clutch as well. Was he flawed? Sure. But isn’t like we have someone every year on the roster who averages 17.4 ppg on 47.7% shooting in their career here, also 4.7 rpg, 1.7 spg and a positive AS/TO ratio despite being a non-passer.

Yes, Oweh was not perfect, but he did win three (3) games for us with last second-shots during his two (2) years. Pretty clutch, as you say !!

Yeah. If things go well he could apply enough pressure inside to make driving and perimeter shooting easier for our bevy of guards. He could possibly even put some OOMPH in our Zoom action with that hellacious passing ability (compare his assist/turnover ratio last year to what Amari did here, in fact). If things go the Mo way, derp. But we’ll hope that doesn’t happen too often.

You can't look at stats alone. Mitchell has the height and versatility to be that missing piece. Oweh wouldn't be starting over Momcilovic in any sane universe.

Mitchell gives us an immediate boost at the 4, and is a legit inside outside threat from the 4. He gives us a look that we were missing.

With him, this team could put 3 top options on the floor at the end of the game and you have to account for each of them. We aren't limited to zoom handoffs and spacing tricks. We can toss the ball to Mitchell, or Momcilovic, or Wilkins and let them go get a bucket. The SEC likes to hold the cutter and screen man to shut down our sets. We can work around it now if we need to.

A significantly more efficient Oweh just based on shooting splits.

Still rolling with my TJones comps. He’s an enormous add. Takes us from top 15ish, to solidly top ten and most importantly “in the mix”

With classes starting Monday, I would think we’ll know fairly soon. My gut says we get him but I wouldn’t sleep on him going back to Mizzu.

Yeah I'm really excited for his commitment...
I was under the impression mizzu has zero remaining roster spots available; along with money restraints. Come on down MM #3

A whole lot of truth to all of this, except the Mo reference. Here's why...He HAD to be that way for Mizzou. Mo just did it because that's what he did. Mitchell isn't that type of a player.

You know I was never a big Otega fan, at least in the regard he was going to turn out to be SEC POY. My take was always if he's your best player your team isn't going to be great. Low ceiling team, if you will. But sheesh, w/o Otega on that team...yikes, they'd have been just awful. Feel the same way about Aberdeen too really.

This is exactly where I see Mark Mitchell fitting in. He is a total replacement for Oweh. He has athleticism the strength of Oweh and he’s taller. But he would be the Bulldog whether he plays the three or the four I mean, I think about playing him at the three so he could defend a smaller guy, but you have Momi who might really suffer at the 4 because of his rebounding so he may need to play at the three nevertheless it’s still a replacement for Oweh. It’s like a piece of the puzzle we overlooked from the get-go and Mark Pope is a very lucky man to get this guy at this point.

Hes also the only reason that dog crap team made the ncaa tourney. And miraculouslu beat a cupcake to make the 2nd round.
Yeah, without a way popes tenure looks completely different. Maybe a first round win year one. But honestly, neither year was it would’ve been a lock to get into the tournament. Everyone who thought we overachieve folks first year it was because oweh. Made out the first round last year because of Oweh. We were getting smashed like nobody else until Oweh got it together last year. And I was really expecting for this team to suffer without his physicality and leadership.. honestly when we played Missouri I didn’t even notice Mark Mitchell so who knows he’s kind of a wildcard, but I do think he has the same skill set that Oweh did. I don’t know who this basically takes 35-40 minutes from. But it’s probably gonna be worth it.

I noticed him :). He was the main reason I was having a heart attack with 2 mins left in the SEC tourney game.

Go look at a globe for starters. If you wanna get real fancy, just go to Google Earth.
Talking about the other side of the argument, genius.
