Part of the gig is passing on kids who turn out to be better than what you saw and projected.

Coaches recruit a couple dozen kids a year probably more and sign 5.

Before Pope, did we routinely target Mormon kids? Obviously the transfer portal and BYU moving into a power conference changed landscapes. But I don't recall targeting a ton of known Mormon kids where BYU would even be a potential recruiting battle in yester years.

I mean obviously Pope is Mormon, but I can't say without looking it up if he was a Mormon back at Washington when he transferred to UK, or if BYU was trying to get him to transfer there.

It’s never a miss no matter how many times we are in the final choices to some on here. Longshot probably, but a miss nonetheless. I think we prioritized MM, but it is something that our Mormon coach couldn’t recruit to BYU and now can’t get them here either over BYU. Oh well, get MM at all costs now.

Pope trys to say that we have a top 5 portal class every year but other than MM, we didn't get the big fish from there either. 2024 our highest portal guy was Garrison at #20. 2025 we got Quaintence, which was a flop, but the next highest recruit was Lowe at #36. 2026 we got MM but then our next guy was Diallo at #28. Not good enough to be successful at a Blue Blood school. Sadly, have wasted 3 years. Thank you Mitch.

I find it so funny how you think you can quantify a players ability by they’re transfer portal ranking and act like kentucky has some great history with high ranked transfers prior to mark pope era but that isn’t true seeing the portal just really popped off a few years ago.

Also just use your brain and eyes and tell me is Jackson shelstad better than Zoom/wilkins? Because he certainly ranked higher

Seriously? What does that particular religion have to do with not coming to UK. Do we not recruit (and sign) Muslims for example, just because we have a Mormon coach? We've had several Mormon players among UK's athletic teams and several Mormons in administration roles in our Athletic Department over the years. Obviously Pope is targeting more Mormon players because he has connections and ins with those players and families, which is why we are battling BYU, the Mormon flagship school, so often now. I'll excuse him for "missing" on an inelgible player that he had on the backburner and wasn't trying to get and landing his first choice, the better player. Take 2 weeks off and then quit.

We sure have been going to battle with BYU a lot in the past 2 years for recruits and transfers and seem to be losing a good amount. Before this stretch I had not thought of BYU hardly at all. Weird time to be a UK fan.

BYU isnt landing kids because of it's Mormon values lol. Its landing kids because.. again.. they are rolling out big time tech/Utah jazz money, and secondly because of a head coach with strong NBA ties.
