It was said Pope hosted Jaxon Kohler on an official visit when Pope was at BYU
They said Pope told him and his family he would rather wait and recruit him out of the portal in a couple of years and the family still resents that even though they like MP personally
Have'nt we told other kids to wait and lost them ?
What a strategy !
Hope i am wrong but I am picking BYU on this one
He is a Mormon kid from Utah and grew up not far from Provo
Big time kids don't want to be told you are our second choice and would you care to wait ?
Hope I am wrong and would love to have him.

Seriously doubt you are wrong. Pope needs to work on his sales pitches.

Before Pope, did we routinely target Mormon kids? Obviously the transfer portal and BYU moving into a power conference changed landscapes. But I don't recall targeting a ton of known Mormon kids where BYU would even be a potential recruiting battle in yester years.

I mean obviously Pope is Mormon, but I can't say without looking it up if he was a Mormon back at Washington when he transferred to UK, or if BYU was trying to get him to transfer there.

I have a hard time believing this. Pope was at BYU at a time when I don't believe that he was turning away a player like Kohler (#54 in 2022 by Rivals) and this was before the portal was in full swing. The portal existed but not like it is now.

Logic dictates that story is complete and total BS. Nothing about it makes any sense.

Not sure if you misheard the story or they mistold it... but Pilgram has said before that Kohler wanted to commit to Pope at BYU until Mich St came into the picture. Pope backed off because he didn't think he could win that battle and the parents still thought highly of Pope.

Pope in no way, has proven to be any better than BYUs new coach Kevin Young.
And this kid seems to have more ties/prefer BYU.

I dont know why some fans continue to beat this "but were Kentucky!" drum. Maybe we get this kid. But if we don't, why do I get the feeling this will be filed away as an excusable miss by some?

By all accounts the top 3 remaining players are Hall, Kohler, and Mitchell. If you want to believe Trilly, Hall wants to come to Kentucky but he doesn't have a committable offer right now. Kohler is down to kentucky and BYU, with BYU being the so called "favorites" because he grew up 15 minutes away. Mitchell seems to be a Kentucky lean if he gets his eligbility granted today or tomorrow in a Louisville court. What else does Mark Pope need to do with this last spot for it not to be called a miss or a whiff? (Not directed at you, just at the masses)
