Just got destroyed by some bad weather today. Coach’s wife posted pics on facebook. I would be sick so close to season start.

What are we moving away from grass? Turf is awful for a multitude of reasons.
Most every high school has moved to turf. They justify it by claiming it to be multiuse where the band, soccer, track and everyone can use it in addition to the football team. Locally they posted an ROI based on this and maintenance cost compared to a grass field. I know they have already replaced it once so I'm calling their initial forecast BS based on this alone. Not to mention they are concerned about the athletes health but they put them on a surface that per AI can be 10 to 70 degrees hotter than grass and not to mention the increase in injuries associated with turf

From playing on turf baseball fields, can confirm it’s significantly hotter…. Not sure about 70 degrees but definitely 10+.

I believe they significantly understate the cost of repair, maintenance & replacement for turf fields. I hate them but I do understand that when you’ve got 2 boys soccer games, 2 girls soccer games, & a football game in 1 week, that can be tough on a grass field.

It was the foam padding that goes under the turf that got scattered. Maybe they can swap home games with West if it gets down to it…

Many of the foam pieces are ruined. I’m sure they’ll get them replaced in time for 1st home game Sept 4 vs West Jones. NEJ coach lives up the street from my mom & helps her out. His wife grew up on our street. They’re great people.

Ive seen the budget analysis for it. This is a "luxury" that is worth the cost for a high school/small college. NFL teams and SEC schools should never have turf.

Starting to see baseball/softball fields go to it.

A turf install for a high school is going to run between $750k and $1.1 million and have a 15 year life. There's about $15k-$20k of maintenance required. So even on the high end, you are looking at a 15 year cost of $1.3 million.

Intensive use grass fields are about $50k a year in watering, labor, maintenance and materials, so $750k.

A turf field can handle 16,000 hours of practice, games, band practice, tournaments, etc. while a grass field can only handle about 4,000 without having to be completely replaced.

I need the Madison and rankin parks and rec to get the new stuff then!
I don't know about the Parks and Recs, I do know Ridgeland HS got away from the rubber pellets a couple years ago. I remember walking on that field in 7 on 7 and my feet were burning. Last time I was on the field they had almost wood chip looking pellets. Significantly better!

Unfortunate, but it looks like the turf hadn't been installed yet, just the shock pad that got blown around so shouldn't be THAT big of a deal.

Turf doesn't take terribly long to install, but doesn't their season start like tomorrow?

70 degrees sounded like an anomaly to me too, that's why I added the "per AI" disclaimer.
Don’t know if the stuff on football fields fares better but having watched a lot of content while planning an outdoor home project, turf in full summer sun is one of the hottest surfaces you can use. Been shown turf approaching 150 degrees in sunny, hot places like Arizona which basically is too hot for pets to walk on.

I used to wonder why baseball in Mississippi seemed to evolve into a spring and fall sport........because obviously the rest of the known world views it as spring and summer, which is how it was when we all grew up. Well, the answer is simple.....heat, and heat on the turf. Can't push 100 games in during the day on Saturday and Sunday tournaments in the summer on turf without dying.

Jamboree at Jones Jr. College Saturday, then a road game next Friday at South Jones. First home game Sept. 4 vs West Jones. It'll all get finished in time.

These usage hours must assume a dry grass field. One heavy rain game on a grass field can wreck it beyond what can be repaired during that season.
I still prefer grass but, to me, wet durability is the biggest benefit of turf.

Not sure at what level schools have the budget to hire staff to maintain grass fields, but I remember the coaches being on the lawnmower and we’d be out painting lines during PE class. So if I were a coach I’d definitely be selling the benefits of turf.

A good grass field with modern drainage will drain as well as a turf field will. But few high schools in Mississippi have this. I remember one year West Jones had to move the return game with Madison Central up to Madison because of all the rain that week.

We had a game on turf in early May where we were pouring ice water down our catcher's shoes in between innings. His feet were cooking, and he couldn't move around to try and relieve the heat like the fielders were doing, plus his cleats had the molded bottoms.

Hell it’s bad enough during early fall seasons too. 2 years ago my son was playing rec ball games on Sunday afternoons at freedom ridge. Seems like his first game was the weekend after Labor Day. Over 100 degrees at 1 on a Sunday afternoon and it was miserable on those turf fields and freedom ridge.

That makes sense. I still think they're stupid and a bad idea.

Article says it was under construction, which makes more sense. I had not heard of the fields unable to take a storm as over half the schools have them in our area. It's all related to the cost of maintenance.

They won't swap with West. If it gets moved, it'll be played at South.
