I don’t always agree with you but this is spot on. It’s just a different world today. MC wouldn’t have 4 titles in a row if they were still the same legacies that they used to have. my buddy had some stories of the old freshman coaches like Barz, Harnedy, etc. He was a mid 90s guy but we were laughing about how big bonecrusher(don’t know his actual name) and he told me that they had a guard that was 5’5” 260 who was a complete beast. Haha. I wonder if anyone would know who he’s talking about bc he didn’t tell me the name just the description.

As far as the way you were coached. Good grief I’ve heard some stories of the old days at a lot of high schools not just MC.

One of my favorites was a suburban public high school head coach who had a sophomore OL up on varsity who was excellent but wasn’t using the right technique. He was trying to lead with his head. To fix that the coach made him practice LIVE without a helmet for a week.
funny but crazy at the
I didn't play OL but O always felt bad for them as Coach Frank Lenti was the line coach and if weren't in the proper splits you would hear a loud crack and the back of your calves would feel an immense stinging sensation.

I'm not disagreeing with what your MC alum friend said but it's just a different era and generation of kids that's all gimme and a lot of sense of entitlement. Now that money is on the table with College NIL deals and high schoolers getting agents it's just a new era that a lot of us are wrapping our heads around. Sad thing is it's going on at most schools. I know a ton of BR alums that are pissed that BR is no longer the "Neighborhood School" and they sold out but a lot of them were the same ones several years ago that were complaining that they never win.....damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Tell your MC friend that no student there is getting a free ride, someone is paying on their behalf either through a funded scholarship where it's funded through the family or the originators.....mostly alums. And back in our days at MC very few scholarships were given because not many existed because the cost of tuition was a lot lower because of higher enrollment and less expenses.....it was just the old building and a gutted out classroom as the weight room. Improvements and additions had to be made.

The way we were coached, disciplined, talked too, treated, it just wouldn't fly in today's time. I feel like the old guy when I was a kid saying "That damn Rock and Roll" 😀, but it's true.
I’ve stood in the endzone for far too many St. Francis seasons where they went 1-8, 3-6, etc. to criticize the way the landscape has evolved (in our favor).

Touching on your point about Rice and MC…is St. Francis a completely and fundamentally different school than when I went there? Absolutely. Is that for the better? Without a doubt…academically, culturally, athletically. I think that’s true also for a lot of these schools.

I'll be honest and I obviously follow HS Football closely, I never heard of St. Francis until maybe 10 years ago. I heard Wheaton I immediately thought of WWS and WN as a distant second. Big turnaround indeed.

I like Benet hoops. I like the blazers and khakis. Sue me.

The football team I watch the most outside of The Brook is East Side. I like the style of ball they play and the moxie. I pull for conference opponents and down programs. Have a respeck for LWE.

most hated: Romeoville (but I feel bad about it now), Andrew, and Providence. Those last two could go 0-9 and all would be right in the world.
Blazers and Khakis? EA did that first :)

Youre gonna hate this. I hate EA hoops. It goes back to the spring of 2020, right before COVID. That lil scrappy Tomcats team knocked my #2 seeded Raiders out in the regional championship. Only thing that made me feel better was the tournament being cancelled. Cant lie I had a terrible cough that March that started in January.

But if EA does the blazers and khakis I salute that 😂

They also knocked out OE and WA. My son was training with Tom Boatright at the time and he had two grandkids on the team. I had to miss the WA game because my son was being inducted into the Honor Society (last normal night I remember pre-Covid). Another dad, who also had to miss and worked at WA was going to get me into the next game as a Camera guy, because at the time they were going to have no fans, but still play.

EA - State Champs :)

My "others I follow" has changed over the years usually based on where kids of friends/family are playing. Certain years I have rooted for Rice, Hinsdale Central, Montini and Naz for those reasons alone. Typically root for Joliet West because its my home district and the Oswego schools because I work in the district. I also tend to pull for ESL and I am not really sure why.

On the flip side, as I have aged, I really don't root against teams any more. Back in the day, I really disliked Providence. But I know a lot of really good people who have gone there as well as have numerous friends with kids there, so that has definitely subsided quite a bit.
