We are in the process of trying to debulk a lot of the extra stuff in our house, and I came across the Clarion Ledgers that I kept from the first five days of September following Katrina’s landfall. I’m in the north end of the state, but I know a lot of y’all are on the coast. If any of you want them for ANY reason, let me know in the next few days and I will get them to you. I bought each of them out of a newspaper stand, so they don’t have an address sticker on them and have never been unfolded. They aren’t worth anything, but that storm impacted a lot of y’all in life-changing fashion, so they are yours if you want them. First claimant gets them.

I would really love to have them to give a my wife that is a history teacher. Those would be awesome for her to show to her kids when she goes over Katrina and her impacts.
I can’t think of a better use for them. She can also show them the Watson Ford ad selling brand new Expeditions for $28,000.

Inbox me the name and address you want them sent to and I’ll get them headed your way.

I’m assuming Devil and Hell won’t be adequate for UPS.

Yeah. The UPS guys kept running off, so we had to get a home up here. Sent.

I still remember reading the forecast synopsis from the National hurricane center and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. You never read that kind of wording from them.

I have some very close family that has been living in the Garden District in New Orleans for a good while. They of course decided to come up here and stay, and got out very early before all the absurd traffic got so bad. They also got lucky as far as damage to their house as well. Still some of course but was mild in comparison.

We were at my in-laws place for the weekend south of Hattiesburg for my nephews birthday party. I-59 was starting to get pretty crowded with people fleeing north so we packed our stuff up that Saturday night and came home. I told my wife to take a look around because it’s not going to be the same and sure enough it blew almost all the trees down around the house.

You were most definitely right to warn her when you said that, even though the hurricane was downgraded some it still did incredible damage to out shoreline and much further in even though it didn’t get the coverage it truly deserved! It absolutely wrecked our coast and inland as well. My 1st cousin Jennifer was married to Robert Doleac for a long while in Hattiesburg. I’m sure you know who they are, if not watch when we play USM and you’ll see plenty of advertising in their Stadiums etc.

I really don’t understand the disconnect some people had on Katrina’s strength. Lots of people stayed in homes pretty close to or on the beach across the coast. They acted like they were surprised by the strength but it was pretty well forecast it was going to be bad.

I guess we should be thankful Katrina downsized to only 140 mph at landfall. 😳
Good grief! That storm will be one that future storms are measured by forever!

When we cleaned out my mom’s house I found a North Mississippi Daily Journal from the day after Kennedy was assasinated. I wanted to save it but it just crumbled. The adds were more interesting than the articles. Car dealership in Tupelo had a daily $500 special.

I live pretty far up in NE Miss. What was left of Katrina was the strongest hurricane remnant I have ever seen here. We actually had a bit of damage from wind around. I don't think that had ever happened with a tropical system here.

If I remember correctly from the final report from Farm Bureau Insurance the only two counties that didn’t have a claim related to Katrina were Tunica and DeSoto.

Sounds about right. Lord knows we had claims all over Starkville.

You have to look for the funny moments from tragedies. Two young coeds walked over to our house in very high winds and rain. They asked if we had extra flashlights, batteries, and if we had any weed. I still laugh about that annually on the anniversary of the storm.

Damage was really odd everywhere. I was living in Brandon near downtown at the time. We never lost power and only lost tv a couple times when the satellite flickered because of the rain but never more than a few minutes.

I however had a friend and his family in Jackson that we just finally gave our housekey to him and his family because they came to our house daily because they were w/out power in NE Jackson for 3 weeks and were coming to our house to shower, cook, and get away from the craziness. Water still isn't working there**

I have a house near Ellisville in S MS that only had a few shingles blown off it on one side but have a friend in Laurel that had trees blown on his house and it was a total loss. Some were lucky, others weren't.

The positive I got from it all is I now am prepared year round w/ Honda generator, Bluetti battery power box, stored food and water, 50 gallons of extra fuel, 3 propane stoves, candles, etc etc etc. I was delivering necessities to the Pine Belt area for weeks that they couldn't get and I don't want to be like them in the future whether its hurricane, tornado or whatever.

"RIVALING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANE CAMILLE OF 1969."
This is the line that mislead a lot of people . Hundreds of people figured "well this can't be any worse than Camille" and anticipated the damage in their area being similar to Camille's and stayed while Camille and Katrina were two very different type storms especially in regards to storm surge .

I still think about the National media referring to MS as the landmass between Louisiana and Alabama
I watched the whole 6 (I think it was 6 parts) part National Geographic series on Katrina. How many references were there to Mississippi? 0. I was so pissed had it not been for Lt. General Honore the whole damn thing would have been a waste.

Katrina was just such a giant storm compared to Camille

Went down with a relief group a couple of days after the storm. Just incredible. So many homes and businesses just gone. No debris, just concrete slabs.
