My only experience with either of these frats was in the late 70’s when I rushed frats on the encouragement of my father. I attended a few events (mainly parties) at Sigma Chi and I was a legacy. The parties I went to were in the middle of the week, and as a science major, this was not really compatible with my studying habits or class schedule.

I did drink (beer was legal at 18 in my home state in those days) but never did illegal drugs. My main memory or non-memory was the day after attending one of the parties I didn’t remember anything from the previous evening except for crossing College Avenue on my walk back to my dorm in East Halls. I had wondered if someone had slipped something into my beer because I knew how much I had to drink and it wasn’t a huge amount.

I decided that frat wasn’t for me because I didn’t think that the lifestyle was conducive to doing well academically. I did not receive a bid and my father was furious because I was a legacy and he said they have to take you. I told my father it was fine with me. I just wonder if the frat was already into the drug scene then and the brothers knew I wouldn’t fit in. They were doing me a favor. I decided to become a Gamma Delta Iota instead.

As an aside, Sigma Chi had just recently occupied the old Delta Tau Delta house at that time after recently coming back from the dead. And the newly reformed Delta Tau Delta was the first resident floor (2nd floor) in my dorm that year. They then moved out from the dorm the following year to occupy another defunct frat house in town.
Where I went to college the Sigma Chis were the "rich boys" fraternity. BMWs and nice jeeps, etc parked in their lot. Not sure if that is the case at PSU but could explain access to cocaine.

While eating lunch with colleagues at the office today, the news on a TV broadcast this PSU story. Pictures of PSU logos across campus, “COCAINE RING” on the screen, and mugshots accompanied the report. Everyone at the table knew that I am a Penn Stater. It became the topic of conversation over lunch.

I’m such an a$$hole. 😞
It is all the fault of Surma and the gutless A Holes who railroaded and scapegoated Joe.

Drugs cut across all societal lines. I knew one guy who was selling bundles of pot until he burned out himself. He was 4.0 and upper middle class. Another guy was always high with a 4.0 in engineering. Photographic memory and went to work at McKenzie Group or whatever their name is.

Drugs in various frats was always cyclical back in the day. Some abusers would graduate while hard liners would join. I don’t think anyone ever had zero tolerance but it would be more confined. Of course, cocaine only became mainstream about the time I graduated.

Robinson’s dad just lost it all also. He will be out as managing partner of a major law firm yesterday. He is screwed.

It makes you wonder if it was an assembly line of pledges were bagging cocaine then why didn't some just leave and report it? Through the rush process they had to have gotten a few pledges who were not total druggies so if they all of a sudden were thrust into having to bag cocaine they would have done something and not just complied. They would have to have the sense it was illegal and participating in it would ruin their futures.
Yeah - that’s among the reasons why I’m not buying it …. We know how the OAG can get creative to form a convenient narrative

I cannot imagine the level of greed and narcissism necessary for already Uber-Wealthy college kids from Philadelphia to decide they need more money so they decide to buy and sell coke by the KILO.

Unreal.

Unreal.
If they are really wealthy, they'll hire a big law firm, roll over on some suppliers, and do no time.

Not at all. Where on earth did you get that?
My bad. It was the reference to some of the kids being out of state with money. That vacuum would be filled with or without them IMO, but overall I doubt a kid up there needed the money that badly. Greed is a helluva drug and it exists way too frequently today.

State College has seen a LOT of swapping in and out of houses by dead and newly-formed or reborn fraternities over the decades. The chapters become like hermit crabs with their shells.

Fox News just broadcast a piece on PSU's cocaine-gate, but they used the adjective prestigious to describe Penn State during their lead-in.

Do you consider Penn State prestigious? 🤷‍♀️

Meanwhile the powder sugar from your morning donut clung to your quivering upper lip somewhat conspicuously.

You should have offered them a bump. They would have forgiven you immediately.

Class of 1985. Had two siblings, also graduates, email me the story. My only thought was I didn't think cocaine was still a thing.
PSU is in the middle of nowhere. How else are these things getting to the campus. It certainly was in my days. The only difference is there wasn't social media or the internet back then. This latest episode won't change these dynamics.

Lived in Tenor Hall used to get 2-6 packs a beer a the bar go out and put them in the suit case. I would then go back in and get 2 more. Take the suitcase into the dorm and we would play poker and drink beers. I graduate Magna *** Lager in March of ‘71.

@Bwifan -- on your suggestion, I removed the post in question. I had to remove your post as well, as you used the Quote function, and even though the post in question was removed, the Quote still showed the removed post. (I never tested that extensively. It's possible that it would be removed in time.)

Thanks Tom. This is going to take a long time to fix. He is a PSU grad with the same name and someone pulled his pic off social media and pasted it into that post. His lawyers are watching all the TV stations, social media etc this is something that is literally ruin his career and life. He is very successful and in a high security job. His lawyers are going sue everyone who posts his picture. Media and people need to be very careful posting. We forget what rushing to judgement did to a football coach near and dear to us did.

Sigmachi was always rogue, even skivvy. Never liked their house. No surprise. They were always the ‘entrepreneurial’ house up the street when I was at a fraternity close by. We had five brothers arrested for printing counterfeit football tix but they were amateurs compared to sigma high.

Definitely was a shooting on the hub lawn in the 90s
I was being facetious. I was there when the shooting happened. My point was that bad sh*t happens all the time and it happens everywhere. This isn’t a sign of some Penn State apocalypse.

I guess I’m just tired of reading the “I’m ashamed to be a Penn Stater” shtick in here every day in every thread. It’s usually just whining about how the football team is ruining their life with poor recruiting and not enough NIL. Now a bunch of people get arrested and many lives could be ruined yet posters are complaining about feeling embarrassed like they’re somehow the victim because they’re Penn State football fans.

I knew someone that was there that day too. She credits a man running from the Hub screaming that someone has a gun to send her down towards college. She did see one of the victims, not sure if the victim died or not. You are right, bad things happen everywhere.
