Was just in Bassett a few days ago.. just a tad farther west is a really great area. The recreation there punches well above its weight. Actual trout streams!! I could see us owing a cabin up there someday. Great area.

Rock County was also part of Brown County, along with Keya Paha County, in the early 1880s. Doc Middleton and his gang of "Pony Boys" horse rustlers roamed up and down the Niobrara River valley hiding out & stashing stolen horses in the canyons along the river. A "lieutenant" in his gang was a young man named Albert "Kid" Wade. He was caught & arrested by law enforcement in February 1883. During on an overnight stay at the hotel in Bassett while being transported to O'Neill for trial vigilantes entered the hotel and took the Kid out 3 miles east of Bassett and hung him on a railroad whistle post. His frozen body was cut down the next morning and buried in the Bassett Boot Hill graveyard up on Bassett Hill. The future Rock & Keya Paha counties were labled "Mob Counties" by residents of the area.
