Few takeaways from yesterday.

GR and OS looked pretty even. Dinwiddie wasn’t too far behind.

Green Run has the tools to finally get over the hump and win Class 5. Maurikus Banks is legit the best QB in the state of Virginia. Looks like he’s gotten taller and put on some weight. Huge offensive line and abundance of skill guys.

Oscar Smith didn’t show too much but they will again be the favorites to win C6. The freshman QB looks the part and they are fast and physical as usual.

The young Dinwiddie team showed flashes of Mills’ experienced teams of the past. They’re also starting a freshman QB and they have an impressive sophomore RB who broke a long run for a TD against Oscar Smith’s starting defense on the 3rd play of the scrimmage. Their defense did a good job of containing the two high powered offenses of GR and OS. GR scored on the last play (Banks threw one right on the numbers) and OS scored twice on Dinwiddie’s starting D. Lots to work on but they will definitely be in the hunt come late November.

Great scrimmage for all 3 teams.

Speaking of being favorites in class 6, there are good teams in 6 ( I still scratch my head as to why Madison doesn’t get mentioned as much as a top state team) but it seems to me class 5 gets the most talked about and ratings wise have more of the top public schools in the state. With that said, do folks really look down on the class 6 nowadays? The recent state titles Smith has won, they still have finished 4-5th in the final state rankings which is great but low for a champion at the highest class. Is it based on the team or the path of what it takes to win the title?

I think 5 and 6 should combine myself. Oscar Smith has been just about head and shoulders better than most teams they play in C6. Madison is a great program that hasn’t gotten over the hump, Freedom had their run and of course Highland Springs dominated the last half of the decade (Stone Bridge was right there with them). It’s been the same 3-5 teams in both classifications. I respect C6 but I think it would be more competitive if it was combined with 5.

I agree… I liked the A,AA,AAA honestly. It was definitively harder to win a championship but I guess less of a money maker. Highland springs, smith, Varina, would’ve all been Div.6

How would you compare the top C6 nova schools with the top 757 schools? Smith, kings fork, Maury green run Indian river

It make waaaaaay too much sense to the VHSL to combine Class 5 & 6, that’s why they won’t do it. Frankly it’s sad and it’s ruining the level of competition around the state. Since realignment in 2013 things have been significantly watered down so that everyone can get a participation trophy. It wasn’t like that in the previous years!! District Championships mean zero now. Teams use to fight scratch and claw their way to a 8-2, 9-1 record and still miss out on the playoffs. It’s just too watered down it’s no passion kids have nothing to work for because 4-6, 5-5, 6-4 can get them in the playoffs. IMO it should be ONLY be 5 Classifications with each region ONLY allowing 4 Playoff Participants. Make these kids work it’ll make the on field product significantly better.

I think the NoVA schools are legit. I think the problem has been that teams like Oscar Smith, Maury and Highland Springs have just been very superior over the last few years when the NoVA teams meet them. I don’t think there’s much difference in the better NoVA teams and the 757’s better teams.

I agree with those teams just being superior than the rest. I think the 757 has been more top heavy these past 6-7 years though than Nova. Nova more battle tested though. Freedom was mentioned… 5 power 4 skill players at once, we won’t see a team like that for a long time. They got bored with highland springs in that title game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesnt seem like the NOVA teams ever really play big games outside of NOVA during the regular season. It's a 2 way street but NOVA schools are going to have to start coming down 95 south for some big in state matchups.
They have over the years but you’re right, not as frequently as the 757 schools. Though Centreville played on ESPN against Gonzaga stone bridge has played good counsel and Martinsburg a few times I believe , those state championship Westfield teams that 3 peated against Smith scrimmaged dematha but they got blown out as vhsl isn’t up to par with the WCAC. Would like to see nova best vs 757 best early in the season though. I think they have better coaching up there but maybe not the “ star recruits” as the 757 schools have to showcase particular players. So that could be a reason also.

I think the VHSL should have a triple header like NC does. Pick a location and go. Think about it :
VHSL FRIDAY/SATURDAY KICKOFF presented by the Washington Commanders @ UVA

Friday:
Dinwiddie vs Westfield 1pm
Oscar Smith vs Riverbend 4pm
Maury vs James Madison 7pm

Saturday:
Highland Springs vs Centreville 1pm
Green Run vs Battlefield 4pm
Varina vs Stone Bridge 7pm
A slate like that would be an absolute dream!! That’s one thing about the VHSL that I’ve always had a problem with. They don’t advertise the kids like they should. Virginia is so far behind other states like NC Ohio Texas & Florida when it comes to sports and a lot of the reason is because the League is stuck in the early 00s still. It’s 2026 and kids barely have news coverage. If it wasn’t for VAPreps, sports coverage in VA would be down the commode.
I miss the Cox 11 Sports Report Matt use to do, Henrico Sportswire does a good job for Henrico schools. Sportsplug 757 is getting better but as a collective VA is still behind. The kids deserve better. I for one would love a *Virginia Preps GOTW* Matt on the call at which school he and his crew chooses for that week, an have it broadcasted on Youtube.
