Anybody ever take Waymo?

I took a few of them last year when I was visiting my son in Austin. For the most part, it was very normal. I will say that on one occasion when it pulled out in front of crossing traffic, it is not a move I would have made at the time...

I’ll take the computer cars over humans. From ChatGPT:

A new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study published in July 2026 found that Waymo’s driverless vehicles were involved in 68% fewer police-reportable crashes per mile than human drivers in the same locations and years. The study covered about 50 million miles of fully driverless Waymo operation in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin.

There’s actually newer Waymo data

Waymo’s own analysis through March 2026—covering 220.6 million fully autonomous miles—shows even larger reductions for serious crashes: 94% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries, 82% fewer crashes involving any reported injury, and 82% fewer crashes involving an airbag deployment, compared with its human-driver benchmarks.

I rode in a Waymo in Atlanta earlier this year. It was a smooth experience! No issues at traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, even navigated around a cement mixer truck double parked. Just a little unnerving seeing the steering wheel move back and forth.

You’re asking the wrong person. Be grateful there isn’t a spring mechanism on the seat that would eject you through the sunroof. (That particular technology isn’t expected to go online until early 2028, is my understanding.)

Waymo going with a classic Aston Martin. Nice.

Used them twice this weekend on a trip to Austin. I purposely only used them for short trips but it went smooth. Not sure I could use them for highway trip though.

The computers are going to tell you to trust the computers. Got it.

This will never work. Trust me.

I took it on New Years Eve. I have an older Tesla and don’t trust Full Self Drive (on my model year), but I didn’t have an issue trusting Waymo.

I recently had a loaner Tesla and I used FSD without a problem. The new models rely on more and better cameras.

Not sure if you are being facetious or not, but self-driving cars are absolutely going to be standard in the future. There's a reason the pilot isn't flying your airplane as it hurtles 500 mph across the sky - it's safer on autopilot.

Yep, you need to upgrade to 2024 model year or newer - Hardware 4 supports the latest version of FSD. Its FSD function is phenomenal.

It is a good assumption to make for any of my posts that I am being facetious, joking, etc. Although, there is usually a little truth in jest.

I was in a cab in Chicago one time getting onto an expressway, and the cabbie slammed on the brakes, pulled over and got out of the cab. 30 seconds later he comes back and says "That's a damn nice shirt someone lost there!".
I think we could all use a damn nice shirt once in awhile!
