The irony / hypocrisy…if Afari (and every other 2022 athlete isn’t ruled eligible immediately).

If they are cracking down and implementing 5 for 5 to prevent O’Berry from playing because he’s exhausted his eligibility based on the same justification.

Seems like a slam dunk legal case…the NCAA either applies the eligibility standard or it doesn’t.

O’Berry graduated in 2021, I don’t know how it was even a possibility for him to be eligible. Afari should add some depth, he graduated in 2022, a true 5 for 5.

Totally agree with all of this, however, he seems to be in on every tackle, sometimes players just have a nose for the ball.

He was best at nickel and even decent as olb. As ilb he was just bad.

Ya he was involved in tackles but people give that stat way too much weight. Linebackers shouldn't even get a tackle credit if its more than five yards beyond the los. That's where he padded his stats because he was constantly letting ol get into him or just out of position.

That happened because he wasn't good at having to read the entire set of keys (instead of half the field) and couldn't navigate the extra trash that comes with being inside. Then he was too light to disengage when blocked.

They need to just put him back outside. If he gets anything beyond depth snaps at ilb we're in big trouble.

Here's the unpopular/uncomfortable truth about afari: hes too small to be a linebacker but too slow to be nickel or safety.

He's a tweener. Anyone heavily relying on him is in big trouble.
I totally agree. …he never bulked up and kept his speed like we imagined his first two years. Godfrey sort of jumped him as better interior LB last year IMo

I’d hope this to be a depth piece and not playing over Bo Barnes and Godfrey inside plan

as far as Oberry….i am sort of not feeling good about losing Soles and not sure on our edge pass rush. This can’t be helpful to lose a potential player over there. But maybe Sam Greene and Cowan were higher in depth chat?

Imo soles was fun but overrated because he was such a one trick pony. Was only about 220 which is crazy light. That's why greene took all those reps when he came back.

If greene can stay healthy, he will be really good. Iirc we added another strong edge so i think we really upgraded that position.

Soles was tied for leading sack..granted 3.5 ain’t amazing. But it’s hard to argue he wasn’t best edge rusher and he was a freshman…so he can add weight I don’t know who else we added off the edge to rush passer

I guess Cowan might be as good going forward.//but UK doesn’t appear to me to be good off edge

Soles was good in obvious pass situations but he was tiny. When he had to play more snaps, he just couldn't hold up.

I know the coaches have said they want the defense overall to be versatile, but I wonder if the loss of O'berry/addifion of Afari will make this defense more 4-3 or 3-4?

Seems you may have some guys to play 4-3 DE... coaches specifically mentioned transfer Tyler Thomas & Tr FR Ben Duncum as showing potential...So, in a 4-3, you could have

SDE: Humphrey-Grace 6'4 271, Ahmad Breaux 6'3 278, Brian Robinson 6'5 257
NT: Chops Harkless 6'3 346, Kalen Edwards 6'4 335, Dominic Wiseman 6'1 298
DT: Tavion Gadson 6'5 303, Jaden Williams 6'4 290, Ahmad Breaux 6'3 278
WDE: Sam Greene 6'2 251, Tyler Thomas 6'5 260, Ben Duncum 6'5 224

SLB: Cedric Works 6'5 247, Lorenzo Cowan 6'3 250
MLB: Bo Barnes 6'1 244, Grant Godfrey 6'3 240 (when Barnes needs a breather), Tavion Wallace 6'1 241
WLB: Grant Godfrey 6'3 240 OR Alex Afari 6'2 227, Antwan Smith 6'3 226

The depth certainly looks a little spotty to me... I especially don't see how the front DL depth is there to play 3-4 very much... just not a lot of 290+ lb space eaters up front.

Probably 80% of the time we will be in nickel anyway.

I’d have Antwan Smith inside and Afari outside

Our depth is an issue across the board. Our starters are very impressive but we're a few key injuries away from being in massive trouble.

With this insane sec grind, we have zero chance of staying healthy. We need some depth guys to really step up during the season to try to preserve starters as much as possible then really step up when they go down because it will happen.

We're going to need alot of luck, otherwise it could be really ugly by the last three games. UL will once again benefit from the mental and physical beatdown. Hopefully we can at least pull it together to finally not quit in that game.

I am admittedly NOT a knowledgeable football guy, but it kinda looked like that to me when I was looking at several positions as well.
