That said, I sure would have liked to have beaten Bame in '81 too. Although the Dick Pace Egg Bowl Screw Job would have still been in effect.

I might have missed it if already mentioned, as this seems like the most obvious no brainer of all time.

But if not - 1998.

Beat Tennessee in Atlanta.
Lose to Memphis at the Liberty Bowl.

Don’t see how there could possibly be a better option. Everything else relies on further hypotheticals to make it special. This gives us the bird in hand. Undisputed SEC title. No other scenario could assure this 100%, or assure the only thing that could trump this - a BCS or CFP bid.

ETA: I was lazy, and definitely missed it.

Well heck, just change the 1998 Memphis football game to a loss (which didn't count in the SEC standings) and change the 1998 SEC championship game against TN to a win. We are now 1998 SEC champs in football!
This, I was just about to pull up that schedule and see what nonconference game we could sacrifice for the win against Tennessee. That game and the ladies basketball games with Notre Dame are two of the biggest gut punches for where "we almost had it"

Just now thought of this, but considering how it played out, I might trade a number of wins to have beaten Auburn with Cam Newton. Auburn may have still won it all, but I'm betting they wouldn't have, they'd have fell off a little and dropped some games. And then those damn Bammers wouldn't have convinced our folks to go public with that story.

But of course, nope, worst case imaginable Miss Stake football scenario is what actually occurs.

I'm going off the cuff. 1988 swap La Tech win and Ole Miss loss. Would've been hilarious to be 0-10 heading into the Egg Bowl and beat those 17ers for our only win. I guess instead of Tech and 10 it could have been Toddy and 10.

That year we lost at usc …was that 99?
2000.

That was the best overall football team, combined with the chance to do something special, MSU has ever had. You might could argue 2018, but I still think it's 2000. We won big and lost small, and that's the trait of a championship roster. We just choked too many damn times in the Miss Stakish of ways. A better QB might have overcome some things, but oh well what might have been.

Yes. A better QB would have helped.

We lost all of our away games in the SEC - Carolina, LSU, Arky, and Ole Miss - had the chance to win everyone of them. Pissesmeoff no end thinking about it. USC had a good team but they ended up choking down the stretch and got destroyed by Florida who we beat handily earlier in the year. The Ole Miss loss was singularly bad.

The Shreveport Snow Bowl was fun -- but it kinda made you forget how disappointing the season was.

After reading the rules carefully, I would trade MSU’s loss to Alabama in 2014 for Ole Miss’ egg bowl win that same year.

But realistically I like the 98 Tennessee/Memphis swap. That UT game was heartbreaking.

Arkansas was a home game. I was there snow, sleet, and rain. Lost in OT. Beat Kentucky pretty handily up there in early November.
