The NCAA never thinks in advance. If they were going to open up a portal with NIL, they should have installed guard rails in advance. Now that everyone is used to the free for all and excessive freedom, they'll never be able to peel it back. They should have gotten some arbitrator of CBA expert in to draw up sane rules around how it should work. Now if they try to install, they'll just keep getting sued because of all those who have benefitted already. At this point, a 5th year feel pretty arbitrary - why not a 6th and 7th year?

The stupid part is they granted extra years due to Covid and now it’s 5 and 5 but this years seniors fell in that inbetween year where it’s only 4 years. If you look at it from that perspective then they got screwed

The NCAA is largely irrelevant and is becoming more so as time passes. They may see it as being their one last power grab.

Ultimately the NCAA was an unfair organization with their decision making and failed to prepare for or do anything about NIL which was coming until it went to the courts and at that point, the courts rightly sided with athletes. They never actually had the power they believed they had but wielded it anyway. It's been a toothless organization for years and chose the absolute dumbest hills to die on, which hilariously continues in 2026.

The concept of " governing " rules for college sports has become a ball of confusion. Only people who are enjoying the chaos are the lawyers. As for this particular issue I can't figure out what the NCAA is trying to accomplish here. My only guess is they don't believe the Save College Sports Act will be passed, thus endangering the new 5-5 " rule" they are trying to implement.

The NCAA has no power right now because their rules have been ruled illegal. So, once someone gives them a set of rules they are actually allowed to enforce it’s important to them they be shown to still have their power. That’s what this is about.

The real reason is football. Being a basketball school, fans ted to think in terms of the few players lost or gained after the season.

But in terms of football, look and see how many players simply walked away from the team, quit working out thinking their career was over. Coaches moved on without those players in mind.

To make the system fair - for football players and any sport with more than the basketball teams - there needed to be a time lead - the next season.

People need to stop putting in “semi” when making this point. It is not just semi-pro now. Instead it simply is professional sports. Period. No need for qualifying language.

The fact that the NCAA still refuses to use the correct words doesn’t change that.

Not really if you believe like I do. Kentucky is in the Mix for 3 of the best guys if they get eligible. We saved a roster spot. The NCAA is completely loaded with ACC graduates. I once read almost 80%. It’s no mystery why we always have trouble getting anyone eligible and get hammered for things other schools get away with. If it was DUkE, Kansas or UNCheat that saved a spot and was going to bolster their roster. This wouldn’t have been the time to make a stand. They chose this because Kentucky stands to be one who benefits the most. IMO.
I just did some research on the Oberry ruling. Several other guys with almost the same circumstances, some with even more questionable circumstances they gave another year. Guys that did all years at power5. Yet, our guy who redshirted in FCS gets shut down.

UofL has 3 defensive starters come back on the team after the Colorado judges ruling.
