Penn State fans should be more grateful for Slumlord Bob. He's largely responsible for Iowa doing just well enough to keep TnT at the helm.

Before corby comes to white knight, TnT are good coaches but they'll never sniff the championship again.
You missed one other point. The combination of Slumlord Bob and TnT gives this forum plenty of fertile material to ridicule and gloat over as the Penn State juggernaut continues its total domination of the Hawks.

Simply tossing money around wasn't the cause, but it isn't a solution, either. Only DT has it actually figured out thusfar. Only DT.
I am not sure DT figured it out. He was there from day 1. He was part of the foundation, he was there and watched as things were tweaked for improvement and then he learned to apply all he learned by running his own, very elite club. DT learned through experience and is simply applying what the master has taught him.

Is it me, or has Iowa gone down hill ever since Bob started investing. A very consistent slope on that decline as well. I am not necessarily saying tossing money around is the cause, but the negative mojo can't be ignored.

Perhaps constantly accusing Penn State of cheating when most of the wrestlers recruited by Iowa also are recruited by PSU and are close with wrestlers at PSU annd know it to be untrue isn’t a great strategy.

Looking at Iowa's current roster: the only 2 guys PSU recruited were Crookham (while in HS) and Mocco.

Iowa probably recruited more PSU wrestlers. Lilledahl after enrolling at PSU lol. Sealey being the reason M* no-showed Wyoming Seminary lol.

And more guys recruited by both schools who went elsewhere.

Gut tells me that after the initial calls, when recruiting gets more serious, PSU and Iowa pools aren't as similar as we might think.

But: the guys all know each other anyway, so word is getting around regardless. And I suspect most of these guys just laugh off Slumlord Bob-isms.

@johnstownsteel just bookmarked this on the HR for reposting in January after somebody like Connor Harer rides the snot out of him in the 3rd on the way to a 5-1 win.

According to him he will be wrestling 149 🤷 . I wouldn't be going down into that meat grinder if I were him. My opinion Brandt will be better on top then Connor and that's not a knock on Connor

Iowa would be way better off if they simply tried to recruit the guys we recruit and not recruit the ones we do not. They are often fixated on Brands-esq, in your face, old Iowa style wrestling which does not translate well against this generations creative/scrambling wrestlers.

Nicolls trying to downplay the AJ pursuit by the Brands (and him - he was all in favor of recruiting the choad) is next-level gaslighting

Amazing.

It is far past time to move on.
Saying Tom tried to get AJ jr into Iowa for years is wildly inaccurate. There was one time, it did not work. That's it. One cannot control what another sez, does, etc to imply something else was going on”

The context here is that the REALSpooner was addressing this gem about St. Brands and his brave decision re: Amato:

Fair point. I just think of Harold Nichols ISU, John Smith OSU, Joe Seay OSU, J Rob Minn. I know age didn't get all of them, but our/my old guy approach doesn't resonate with the elite younger guys or at least hasn't as Iowa's talent pool drains.
I get the feeling that TnT have high moral standards and they aren't willing to be unethical. Many kids may not like that and many parents may not like it, because they are in it for themselves above all else. Who would have thought having a strong moral fiber would tick off so many people.”

Their moral standards must be on a sliding scale considering their willingness to fight, recruitment of AJ, etc.

Their stubbornness is their defining trait. It is what made them champion wrestlers and it is what is now holding the program back
.”

(My editorial comment: Parents love seeing the Brands threaten to kick their son’s coach’s ***. I heard the KD pipeline to Iowa is going to start rolling any day now) 🤷🏼‍♂️

I thought one of Nicolls jobs with Iowa wrestling WAS to be the immoral and unethical one.
He also is mostly right about Brands and Ferrari. I am pretty sure it was Bob Nicolls who kept giving him money and whispering sweet nothings in his ear while fawning all over him for a year trying to get him into school.

What owner of a billion dollar company uses slang like that? Was the one extra letter too hard to type?

Going to wrestling boards to build street cred is LOL

So, you're saying yes, that one time, Tom desperately wanted a sexual assaulting, nearly fatal crash causing, teammate attacking, parents' section bird flipping BPD sociopath in the worst way possible and it was Beth who had the integrity to put a stop to it. But, to be clear, only one time. Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up.

It’s been true for at least a decade on HR and it’s various permutations that they believe that money drives collegiate wrestling success. They convinced themselves (as a defense mechanism) that PSU was successful because of cheating, slush fund, etc. Anyone even relatively inside PSU wrestling knows that even in today’s world PSU is not buying wrestlers… they weren’t before either.

I never wrestled, but looking at the lifestyle, dedication, work ethic (from wrestlers and parents) required to be elite while knowing that wrestlers have no pot of gold like higher profile sports makes it obvious.

No one wrestled to get rich. Sure as hell no one wrestles to get famous.

Few wrestled to get the .25 scholarship that they had a 1% chance of getting. That might change w NIL and other money coming into the sport.

But it hasn’t changed much yet. So Bob’s $$$$ are largely irrelevant.

You missed the jab. Ross beat up a ton of small town kids and some are now proclaiming him the national champ favorite for the upcoming season. The point was that Ross went to OKST and this is the Iowa thread so I was slamming both Ross and the fact that Iowa couldn't sign him.
Oh, that’s exactly what I was driving at! Just camouflaged it quite a bit. You and I are on the same page.

There are some breathless videos of Ross destroying a conga line of fatties at the Iowa State Championships. I mean, it’s like watching Single A private school football in North Dakota. Let’s see him in some real folk style matches before crowning him

Iowa wrestling stat of the day - The only BIG teams that have had a National Champ they recruited out of high school more recently than Iowa are Northwestern, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska 2x, Minnesota 2x and Penn State x7.

With 14 teams and 7 of them recruiting champs, Iowa is statistically in the bottom half of the league in wrestling.

Ross could be an absolute beast, especially if he grows into that frame..
I don’t know where Ziola and Ross will fall this year, but they both look ready to me. I would not be surprised if either of them win a national title this year.

Ross is getting in a lot of work with Wyatt.
