Anybody keeping up with this? Is it about to be where we can walk in any gun shop and pick one up just like a gun is now? What’s the timeline? Seeing a lot of chatter about today being the final day for government to appeal.

They have until midnight to file an appeal or request a stay. Silencer Shop has stated they plan on shipping the first form 4 suppressor tonight if action is not taken.

The tricky part about the ruling is that it only applies to GOA members and purchases from Silencer Shop because they were plaintiff. Honestly I'm waiting till the ATF makes a clear statement that everything is good and Suppressors, SBRs and SBS no longer require a tax stamp.

The NFA was enacted by idiot politicians and supported by a stupid populace influenced by Hollywood.

1. Suppressors in Hollywood movies go "pew pew" and will turn anyone into a deadly silent assassin. Nevermind that suppressor use is mandatory in many European countries for hearing protection and public noise ordinances. The same European countries that many in our country want to emulate.
2. SBRs and SBSs..can easily conceal those bad boys under a trench coat like old time movie gangsters. A 16 inch barreled rifle or shotgun will be noticeable but not a 15.5 inch barrel. Go figure.
3. Not NFA of course, but the old automatic "switchblade" knife. It makes an evil schnick sound when opened so of course it is ten times deadlier than an ordinary pocket knife. Banned all over the place.

Hopefully it isn't challenged and goes away along with reigning in the ATF and their arbitrary and back and forth decrees on what is legal or not even though they can't make an actual law.
The downside will be supply and demand kicking in on the current inventory and production of suppressors.

Sounds like the DOJ does not plan to appeal the ruling. It was a stupid law to begin with and it more importantly, it was unconstitutional. I plan on buying another suppressor tomorrow, and I’ll probably order a couple AR-15 barrels while I’m at it.
Most of my ARs will become SBRs and will run my 300BO, 9mm and 450 Bushmaster suppressed.

In theory, if a friend had the equipment and the knowledge to build a suppressor, would those now be legal or is that still a federal offense?
"Should be". You can legally manufacture your own firearm for personal use. You just can't give it away or sell it. Suppressors are nothing but accessory items that don't change how the weapon functions.

Not exactly correct the 1968 Gun Control Act classified Suppressors as "Firearms". Yes you can manufacture firearms for personal use but you can not sell or transfer ownership without jumping thru some hoops.

Of course there is outdated language in MS NFA laws that restrict the purchase or manufacturing of a NFA item without a Tax Stamp. So as of today in MS you can't purchase a suppressor with only a 4473 and no Form 4 ATF registration.

After the ruling, there are 27 states that you can now walk in and buy a can just like any other accessory.
Mississippi is currently not one of those states.

That is why I prefaced it with "should be". There should be a cascading effect regarding suppressors as a firearm. Especially since they are in no way, shape or form, a firearm.

In theory an enterprising fellow could take a Roger 10-22, machine the barrel down to a uniform diameter, fabricate baffles from aluminum, port the entire forward 2/3s of the barrel, and then sleeve the outside with carbon fiber tube and all you would hear is the bolt cycling In theory. At a glance it would look like any other carbon bull barrel 10/22.

As a person who owns multiple pistols, shotguns and rifles, tell me what I'm missing? I don't know of any reason I'd want a suppressor, but maybe I'm missing something about them. I mean they look cool in movies when somebody gets offed with one, but I don't have any current plans for a life of crime or espionage.

I can slide the back door open and remove unwanted varmints without my lab going crazy like a thunderstorm just hit or my ears wringing. I'm also considering adding one to a 9mm PCC so if the wife ever needed to use it in the house, she wouldn't damage her hearing.

Here you go I saved you the machining headache. LINK

I have personally shot one of their complete rifles and they are stupidly quiet with standard velocity ammo. Seriously all you hear is the action. The only problem with them is they are a B**** to clean.

That's a good reason. I've shot so many things around my house, my neighbors are immune and my dog is not impressed.

Hollywood has created overreaching expectations on what a suppressor can do. When you get the planets aligned with the right suppressor, barrel, action, ammunition and environmental conditions you can get Hollywood quiet combo. Most of the time it is not a practical combination. Currently the most you can ask for out of a suppressor is to make it hearing safe less than 140 db. Granted I wouldn't want to sand next to someone all day shooting at 140 db but for a few shots it is tolerable.

If you look at Europe it is considered to be rude to fire a rifle or pistol without a suppressor (or moderator as they call them). Like Maxwell said I mainly use mine to dispatch critters in my yard in a subdivision. I have one on my 270 for deer hunting and I don't have to wear earpro when taking a shot either. If I had that when I was younger I would not have the hearing loss like I do now. Those Browning Boss systems were great for accuracy but hell on your ears.

Years ago I had a Winchester Model 70 300 win mag with a BOSS. Got lazy one day and shot a deer with the muzzle still inside the shooting house. I swear the walls bulged out and come back in. My ears are still ringing to this very day.

I literally had my hat blown off by someone sighting in their rifle that had a boss on it.

I got in to pistol hunting and bought a Magnum Research Lone Eagle pistol in 308 Winchester with a muzzle brake. Made the mistake of using one of the wife’s patio cushions for a bench rest one day while checking zero. Blew that sucker into about 200 pieces of flaming pillow stuffing.

I'm with you. Wearing my ear protection when I'm shooting accomplishes the same if not better ear protection. When I have used a rifle or pistol hunting or self protection I have never really heard it. I guess if I was storming a stronghold with other guys it would make sense.

That reminds me of when I bought my first gun. After I got to Starkville some of the guys talked me into trying deer hunting. I went to Bill Montgomery's shop at that time and he helped me pick out a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 with a Charles-Daly 2-7x scope (Still have it). He took me out to a shooting range to set it up and sight the scope. They were also sighting some other guns and one was a .300 Weatherby Magnum. There were multiple benches so I am at one and Bill is walking me through the rifle and how to load and adjust the scope. I was truly surprised on how much a rifle kicked since I had never shot anything more than a pellet gun. The next bench his associate pulls out the Weatherby and that thing about knocked me off my bench. It was like getting slapped on the side of the head every time he shot that thing.

You may not need one and that’s cool. I like to shoot pigs in one field without running off pigs in the next field. I also like to shoot without ear muffs. Most of my rifles also see an improvement in accuracy with a suppressor. I couldn’t tell you if the accuracy increase is mechanical or a byproduct of recoil and muzzle blast reduction. My wife and daughter definitely appreciate the recoil and muzzle blast reduction and I’m sure my son will appreciate it when he’s old enough.
Pretty sure I’m about to have my 375 H&H cut down to 21” and threaded for a suppressor because I’m tired of having the hell beat out of me and I can see a quieter rifle being a benefit after I shoot a Cape buffalo and I’m listening for his friends to charge…

That’s called “auditory exclusion” and the damage is still being done to your hearing.
