What happened to the few good coaches? Left for other programs? No suprise Westover is on the list. They have been unlucky since their first team they ever fielded in 1977. Always a have not in football despite having some talent. Too much local competition and never ever the ability to retain a long term coach despite having a few good coaches along the way.
The best coach looking back was probably the first coach, Bruce McFerren (spelling may be wrong). He was a good man, good coach but seemed to me he put alot more emphasis on defense and his teams always had very bland offenses. Each year there with him they typically went 6-4 or 7-3, good but there were always 2 or 3 local Fayetteville teams better. I think ultimately he opted to leave to coach at one of the coastal city teams, maybe West Carterett or someplace like that. After him its been like a carousel of coaches seemingly. Some came in with high hopes of turning it around, but they never seemed to last say more than 3 years or so. The best of those probably Milton Butts I believe his name was, a prior coach at EE Smith. They improved some under him but if I recall after a few years for whatever reason he returned to the EE Smith. The bottom fell out, rinse repeat. They have just not been able to get it done. Always a have not, never seeming to get their day in the sun. Pretty disappointing as an alum. But we have had pretty good times overall in basketball over the years. What happened to the few good coaches? Left for other programs?
Thanks for the explanation. It's always rough watching your school not succeed as an alum. The best coach looking back was probably the first coach, Bruce McPheffen (spelling may be wrong).
