Completely agree. Play it after the game. Before and during the game play bangers. Stuff that makes fans want to scream and stuff that makes players get hype.

Tradition is great. Play the soft soothing song after the game when we win and the fans can exit the arena and make it home safe to their good ol Kentucky Home.

Make fun of me if you want. I get emotional on Senior Days when they play “My Old Kentucky Home.” I would be livid if it weren’t a part of the tradition. Few things make me feel the way that song can at certain moments.

The honest answer is a lot of tradition doesn't connect with modern day players. The tradition is awesome. Best in the country. It's one thing to appreciate and respect it but another thing to try and make it relevant with modern times.

Find me one athlete in the world that wants to come out and warm up to Opera music. Or in this case a slow song tied to our tradition. Like OP said, don't cut it out..just change the timing of when it's played. I think most fans would like to hear it as they leave and celebrate a victory.

When do they play it before the game? I’ve been to dozens of games at Rupp over the years, and can never recall them doing that except on senior night, when it absolutely should be played (and sung) before the game. All other games it should only be played after. It’s a wonderful tune to play as folks are heading home for the night, win or lose. Many fond memories walking out of Rupp into the chilly fall/winter air, and sometimes falling snow, to that song.

Watching us play W.V. in the college baseball playoffs, I would have thought a team of players hooking arms and singing Take Me Home Country Road would be the hokieest thing ever but it was really pretty cool.

Thats not crazy. I'm the same way. Love my old Kentucky home. They would be crazy to get rid of it. But warm ups or mid game isn't the time for that kind of song imo. You can't get rid of it because that would be like saying we need to change our colors from blue to green or something.

I agree with OP. The time before kickoff needs to have appropriate music to hype up the crowd as Stein leads the team onto the field. My Old Kentucky Home always just tempers the buzz in the stadium on those magical Saturdays when we smell blood in the water.

To the people who think it's disrespectful in some way to play it at the end of game as fans file out....I would ask what about doing it between the 3rd and 4th quarters? That could be a solid compromise.

Truthfully, I think having it at the end of game will make it more meaningful. Fans will either stay and celebrate a win and sing in unison, or they will file out and listen to it in somber silence after a loss. Either way, it feels like those situations carry more gravity than before kickoff when we're trying to get the stadium pumped up before the first snap.

There's just something special about that hour to thirty minutes before kickoff. At every level. Grills rolling on a Friday night highschool game. Marching band playing. Like a magical feeling. Like you can feel football in the air.

Well i meant that in a respectful way. Hopefully it didn't sound like a jab at Rupp. Take any coach from that era and they just wouldn't fit in today imo. Just used Rupp as an example because he basically is our tradition.

Arena is named after him and he's the first person most people think of when you say Kentucky basketball. We uphold his tradition and legacy but at the same time we wouldn't want him coaching next years team I don't think. Not because he's a bad coach or none of the racist stuff they try to attach to him just simply it's a different time just like the song is from a different time.

Anthony Davis said he was going to OSU before he walked out into Rupp on game day. He seems pretty modern even if he has been gone for over a decade.

Modern day players love tradition that sets a school apart. They are no different than the players of old.

You know, after thinking about it, the OP has a great point. At many games from other teams, they sing "their" song after the game. The team locks arms and they all serenade the song with the fans. I think it would be a good change.
