I'm sure a majority of folks would agree with you, at least as far as this being a favorite Metallica album, but to me, this was their jump-the-shark record. I didn't like the new direction at all.

Of course, they did not consult me prior to its recording or release, and so it goes...

I always viewed it as Metallic maturing and growing into a slightly different sound. They weren't the kids or young adults playing only thrash metal anymore. This happens with a lot of band that have significant longevity.

Fun Fact: Metallica and NJ...specifically Old Bridge were instrumental in the early days of the group!

The Old Bridge Metal Militia were (and are) a pack of gregarious headbangers from Old Bridge, New Jersey, who populated all the NYC and NJ metal shows in the 80s. Whenever bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anvil, Mercyful Fate, Exciter or Venom—to name just a few—came to town, the Militia was there in full force. You could find them packing the front of the stage at L’Amour in Brooklyn, at Club 516 in Old Bridge, at the Sunshine Inn in Asbury Park, at the Academy of Music in Manhattan, or almost anywhere in the Tri-State area that heavy metal bands and the burgeoning thrash movement were on display. Jerseyites with names like Metal Joe, Rockin’ Ray, Bulldozer Bob (who became Lars Ulrich’s drum tech), Metal Maria (who has since become a publicist for many prominent metal bands), Jethro, John Boy, Tony Bologna and Party Artie would descend to raise hell, slam beers and bang heads. “Everybody had a nickname back then,” Old Bridge OG Rockin’ Ray Dill tells us. “If you didn’t have a nickname, you were nobody.”

Yeah, I think that's a fair read.

In my own case, it just took them too far from what I enjoyed about Metallica, whose sound was innovative and unique in the earlier years. Then again, there are very few bands whose later sounds I enjoy more then their first few albums. I'm trying to think of a band who, for me, is the exception to that, but offhand, I can't.

I never ever cared for Metallica but even at their worst, better that the fake auto tuned 💩 talentless garbage of these days

I think this is a common criticism and is a bit overstated. In my opinion, there are a significant number of talented and good musical acts out today. Are there a lot of crappy, artificial pop music acts today? Of course. Mainstream pop/rock music has deteriorated but there was some bad pop music back in the 1950s through the 1990s. There are more ways than ever to discover decent music today, people have to make the effort. I’m 68 and there are quite a number of musical acts with younger musicians and singers that I listen to and would pay to hear live.

Incredible album! As a kid, when I was home alone after school, I'd take it from my brothers collection and crank it on my mom's stereo.

Adding on to the nostalgia theme, there is a documentary being made about the sometimes forgotten “Summer Jam” rock concert in 1973 at Watkins Glen NY. The concert attracted the largest audience of any concert at the time with an estimated crowd of 600,000. The concert featured 3 of the best and most influential Americana bands of that era, The Allman Bros Band, The Grateful Dead and The Band. I was just a little young to go (15) and was just really getting into rock music. I became a very big fan of all 3 of those bands. Some of those too young to make it to the Woodstock Festival in 1969, made sure they got to this one:

It’s not all doom and gloom:

Led Zeppelin's 'Rock and Roll' named greatest drum intro ever by Ultimate Classic Rock
Some songs need a few seconds to grab your attention. Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" needs about two.

Before Robert Plant sings a single word or Jimmy Page unleashes a riff, drummer John Bonham announces exactly what's about to happen with one of the most recognizable openings in rock history. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, it's also the greatest drum intro ever recorded.

The publication recently ranked the best rock drum intros of all time and placed "Rock and Roll" at No. 1, ahead of countless classics that followed in its wake. More than 50 years after the song's release, it's still easy to understand why.

55th for Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East
I was there at the Fillmore when they recorded that album. On the album you can hear someone in the theater yell out "Play All Night".
And they did.
One of the best live albums ever recorded.

Weird that I'd ever agree with you, but IMO Who's Next is that rarest of albums...as you said...every song great.

I was there. Drove up from Highland Park with my friends. Jamie was 18 and had a car. I was seventeen could share in the driving. The other two guys were 16. I told my strict Italian parents that I was going camping. I didn't tell them where. The entire trip was amazing. I have nothing but fond memorys of it.
