The Lack of Coverage Allowed by Schiano is Wild

He doesn’t care. He knows what his deal is. Needs to have a respectable season to live to breathe another season. Bet that’s what he’s focused on and if he thinks coverage might reveal things that could tip off his early opponents even slightly he’s not interested.

It would take a disaster season for him to be let go, his seat isn’t warm yet.

Was GS this tight-lipped in 1.0 era?
He wasn’t until 2014, where then NJ.com reporter Dan Duggan wrote down every play by play of a scrimmage and published it in an article.

Add in working for Urban Meyer, who does a similar practice and you have what you have today. However I will say though, there’s more college programs out there that cut off media access from practice than you think.

Minnesota is only giving three practices to media, WVU is entirely closed to media, and only had two media sessions so far. The list goes on and on.

This is on Keli now. To Cali's point, all this does and diminish interest and create resentment

To be fair - we don’t really know what’s going on behind closed doors. If there are truly tight position battles going on it’s his right to want those settled before inviting the distraction of talking head / third party views of what’s being observed (which is often not representative of a comprehensive big picture). I’m not saying this is what’s going on but on this particular issue - let’s give it another week or so and see if there are some decisions / announcement. Another couple weeks of radio silence isn’t making or breaking anything on the hype front at this point. It’s the least of our problems.

Agree in a sense. But technically the Vegas line is 4.5, right? Do you think he’d be retained at 4-8? There are 2 automatic wins on the schedule so a 4 win season would definitely qualify as a disaster, no?

Yes he’s retained at 4-8, three wins or less and a discussion could be had. 4-8 he gets another, 5-7 he gets another year or two, 6+ he’s here for the long haul.

The usual suspects are just doing the greatest hits again. We all now it’s dumb, especially when we have people who can and do give us great insights here. It’s almost dumber to have the same discussion every single day though hahaha.

Some of these posters have more in common with Rutgers AL than they’d like to admit

can’t wait until the season starts so they can talk about somewhat new topics

It’s extremely small-minded to think it provides any advantage. The football world knows the 5 plays (ie the playbook). And it doesn’t prevent distraction. Everyone in the program knows what’s being written or said about them. They all know the Big10 basement outside expectations.

It reminds of 1.0 not naming a qb before the Cinci game to ‘make it more difficult for them to prepare’ and Brian Kelly laughed it off and said it didn’t matter to his preparation before boatracing us.

While it’s dumb / extreme and annoys people on this board in the grand scheme of things it has very little impact on anything.

Aside from some people on this board nobody really cares about access or coverage.

It’s not like if Schiano opened the Flood gates we would have an additional 5,000 - 10,000 fans showing up for games.

Put an exciting product in the field and win, and win often.

not on you guys at all and don't think he was trying to intimate that, at least I hope not. your hands are tied and at his mercy/discretion to what you can provide. I think everyone knows this

get that but my point stands
I don't care about what is going on behind the scenes and various power plays. We're not competing for national titles, struggling to get to 6 wins. I highly doubt a more open approach is detrimental to the program.

I do agree the local press shouldn't be reporting play by play stuff etc.. however.

It does impact: the open scrimmage is an event that helps increase perception and growing the fan base. Not as much as winning would, but since 2.0 isn’t capable of the latter they should max focus on the public access and other outward-focused activities. Same idea as the Boardwalk.

I wish he’d let reporters post video of player interviews. Did anyone else notice the Rutgers Rant had audio up of the Surace and Lonergan interviews last week? It got taken down after a few hours.

…and this right there tells you how insanely far from even relevant (let along big time) RU is.
As I've said on The Round Table, people won't want to hear this, but I don't see a realistic (key word here) candidate out there that can do a better job than Schiano given what Rutgers has resources wise.

And this is why I only went to one game last season, and that was mostly to hang out with old college buddies. This program is hopeless.

It’s been like this forever with him. It just gets more glaring every year. I follow SC. The amount of actual practice video and content they produce is more in a day than Schiano has allowed in his life. It’s all so dumb. For a program starving for attention, he should do the opposite. Especially in today’s world.

His methods are harmful to the program.

I would disagree with this based on how Keli is handling other coaches contract extensions.

4-8 would be a disaster.

4 wins gets him another season? WTF?
He has a crazy big buyout and right now the over / under 4.5 wins. Like all the other coaches, he would get another season to turn it around. If he strikes out in 2026 and again in 2027, that would likely be it if I had to guess.

Oh I agree it would be a disaster, but all it would mean is his seat is hot in 2027, it wouldn't mean he's out after 2026.

Not Richie’s fault. I’m sure he would like to have actual real football content here. Look at this board. There is nothing to talk about because Schiano treats the program like Fort Knox.

I’m goong to give whoever we play first game a big tip that may lead them to a win. We will fair catch the first kick and punt.

Real programs aren't run like this. There are what, 18 years of tape on Schiano RU. Is anything really going to surprise an opponent?

Boomers just love to complain about things. Its fascinating and hilarious.

I'd argue the Yogi Roth/KJ interview was more entertaining and reached a wider audience than an open practice would. There would be 5 guys with white hair and beer bellies at the practice benefitting from it.

I’ve previously given Schiano his due for elevating a moribund football program (twice) to competitive status. However, if there is no legitimate breakthrough to the upper half of the B1G (winning conference record and 8+ regular season wins) within the next 2 seasons, how can he be retained? What FBS (Nevermind B1G) program will employ a HC for over 8 years to build a winning (not mediocre) program? There is a President /AD in place that have made winning a requirement. RU has been more than patient and supportive institutionally with him twice.

Rutgers doesn't have the resources to get to that level that you want, the ceiling is eight wins, not the floor. Six wins and going to bowl games, with a random season of 8 wins every once in a while is probably about the best you'll do until serious money comes into the program.

It doesn’t seem to me that Illinois and Indiana were in much better shape than RU a few years ago, yet they have ascended. I can’t see 6-6 regular seasons being tolerated after 7-9 years of the same coaching regime.

Indiana is a complete outlier in all of CFB, not many if any programs can replicate that.

Illinois was better off financially by a good amount.

Greg lives in terror of QB debates/controversies (since Dodd/Savage/Nova days of hostility). I'm not excusing Fort Schiano - just noting reasons. He was also subject to several hostile media campaigns (2008 unreported payment thing strategically set-up for season start, Tennessee and Penn St thing). Greg is good on his own general "hang-out" talks but likes to keep football, media contacts down to fluffy, cliché ridden chit-chats.

I don’t know. I get the buy out and agree if he gets 5 wins there’s no question he’ll be retained. But based on the way the schedule lines up, a 4 win season is going to mean a lot of consecutive losing to teams that will be perceived as beatable. The thing is - if he’s not 3-2 after the first 5, that is a disaster in its own right because it likely means we lost to BC. But if we do win that one, your talking about a 1-6 finish down the stretch which means that we’d either be ending on a really bad note with a home loss to Michigan State or entering that game having lost out to everyone other than Howard from USC game forward - in which case, nobody will give a crap about that final game at that point.

I do think it’s more about how the offense and defense perform than the wins and losses but if the defense improves and the offense doesn’t implode I don’t see how we don’t find a 5th win on the schedule.

Maryland and MSU are not very good, Wisconsin at that point might be in turmoil and their QB sounds like he might not be all that.
