This guy went to great links to cheat at his member-member. But I think it’s a little dramatic to say it rocked the golf world. Club events like are magnets for golfing “creativity”.

And saying he “resigned” is a nice way of sugar coating his dismissal.

I played in a four man charity scramble earlier this summer and a group turned in a 57 which was absolutely BS. I saw the scores posted for my local home course this morning for their annual two man scramble and two guys turned in a 54. It would take two PGA pros to score 54 on a good day from the back tees, not two randoms from Podunk Ms who entered a local club tournament.

I used to play golf with this kid at Canebrake while he was in school at WC. He is something. He was a good golfer. Didnt need to cheat. Money does crazy things to people.

Shoot your best score one day one and then flighted and a blind draw after the round to determine how many strokes you can improve before being bumped up a flight - or two.
Played in one for several years with a buddy and we played pretty poorly on Saturday and was put in the 4th flight about middle of the pack.
Came out Sunday and couldn’t miss a fairway and the hole looked as big as a basketball goal that day.
Improved like 8 or 9 strokes, got bumped up to 2nd Flight and won the dang thing.
Good thing a lot of folks knew us.

Casual golf... cheat away. No one cares. The second you cheat with money on the line you should be put in jail for theft. I hate a ******* thief, especially one that has plenty and just steals for the sake of stealing. It's one thing to be hungry and steal, it's entirely different to steal and make no mistake, you are a ******* thief if you cheat at golf with money on the line. People were shot for a lot less in the Old West.

It's infinitely more likely for a 9 to shoot even than a 7 to shoot 3 under.

We played in a tournament, did the normal give yourself a better lie and little normal things. Had a good score for a scramble.

We were behind the guys who won and they beat us by 9 strokes. Pretty amazing since they didn't hit a single fairway with a drive.

Saw some competitions where whoever is leading has to tee off in front of everyone on the last hole. Pretty hilarious to see a bunch of guys slicing into the woods when they are supposed to be shooting a 60

I used to play in a weekly scramble. The number on each team varied depending on the amount that showed that particular Thursday afternoon but usually 2-3. You drew partners and two teams per hole. The other team kept your score and vice versa. $5 to enter and it paid two places. That’s my kinda golf.

He was determined to go for birdie instead of just protecting our score. We ended up making the birdie and finished dead last in Flight 1.

So instead of potentially winning $1,000 in the second flight, we won absolutely nothing because one guy needed to prove he could make birdie in a charity scramble.

Do Overs are given automatically but you can’t take a second Do Over until it’s repaid by someone in the group. If you declare on the first hole that you’re not hitting out of the sand then it’s acceptable to lay out of a trap anytime. We really just don’t care. Golf is just an excuse to hang out for 4-5 hours and we never play for money. Half the time we forget to keep score.

I used to play in a Saturday morning group of mid handicap players for very small, friendly stakes. One guy was so serious about the rules that he wouldn't allow any of us to even move the ball if it was next to a tree root. He eventually injured his wrist and had to sit out for quite a while. Karma.

Many Years ago the first individual tournament I ever played in when I was a member at Backacres in Senatobia I did something similar. I was a 6 handicap at that point and could shoot a 90 or a 70 on any given day when I played real play it as it lies golf. It was a two day tournament and I was in every bad spot off the tee that there was and shot a 90 something on day 1. I'm in flight 5 for day 2 and shoot a 79 and win the flight for like $500 in proshop credit. I was so embarrassed. I did get a new golf bag though.

man, that's the definition of sand bagging. Don't be doing that kinda stuff.

It happens all the time in scrambles and its near impossible to police that but that always rubs me the wrong way when I see people doing that.

My playing days are over thanks to multiple work-caused thumb surgeries, but two quick tournament notes:
1. I can remember two years back-to-back where I thought teams in the Birmingham alumni golf tournament might have a physical confrontation. The second place team both years was absolutely certain the winners were cheating via handicap. No one could prove anything because the frickin' club pros were handling the scoring, and whatever math they used, they wouldn't talk about like it was some sort of secret sauce instead of just taking a percentage of handicaps and having a max. Which, by the way, I always was against...we're paying you, why do you get to decide how our scoring is handled?
2. I had no idea the late Tyler Threadgill was a long drive specialist. I casually invited him to come play in the Nick Bell tournament one year trying to help Ms. Linda get more golfers, then he seem surprised I didn't pay his entry when he ended up on my team. Once he teed off, I realized he was constantly being invited as a ringer. We won going away, and even Dan Mullen, who both played and presented the trophy, was questioning our score.

i bet you’ve never won the net championship

I won my share, especially considering my level of skill. I don't make birdies but I make a ton of pars, that does not go well in a scramble as most of my shots remain playable but rarely are great. I am not short off the tee but not game changingly long either. I don't 3 putt often but I don't make a lot of longer putts either. My strength is getting up and down from just about anywhere which shouldn't be that useful in a scramble. I do better in medalist play when it's played down. I beat a lot of guys when they have to play their own ball that beat the crap out of me in a scramble format.

I think I didn't explain myself well when it comes to the cheating thingy, which isn't unusual for me. I didn't say I wouldn't sandbag, I said it was cheating. If everyone is taking a club length even to get out from behind a tree, you bet your *** I was taking one too. "Preferred lies" yep, in a scramble for sure. Then sandbagging? That's part of the scramble experience and it's known but:

When someone wants to see how good they can be and wants to do their best and not sandbag (cheat), I can respect that as well.
