Mount Gay became my rum of choice after we went to the distillery on an excursion. I’ll try other stuff but always come back.

I've been making my old fashioneds with the addition of banana liquor (provides a sweetness and you can adjust the simple syrup accordingly) and black walnut bitters. Not necessarily an everyday old fashioned but a nice twist to change things up
Taste in Ridgeland has a banana old fashioned and it's fantastic. I had no idea that was a thing, but damn it's good.

It’s one of the few of the big producers where the flagship brand is not the name of the distillery. Heaven Hill definitely knows what they’re doing. Evan and Wild Turkey are two that I always have around.
My Dad has been an Evan man for a long long time. He will turn 85 this month.

FWIW, if you’re unaware, the bottle is modeled after a traditional copper pot still used to distill whiskey.
That’s pretty cool, wonder how it stands up to or compares to my Woodford Reserve Master Collection or any Woodford small batch. Just curious if someone can tell me? Also I haven’t seen Willet in my area. Tupelo probably has it though I’d think. Which is 25 mins away roughly.

Was this seriously ever a question or are you just trying to make a funny lol. In case your serious its mighty phallic so depends on if you like drinking from bourbon dicks with the balls at the bottom 😂 seriously I drink some good stuff and never heard of willet before. Now I’m intrigued but without the penis shaped bottle.

You've never heard of Willett? Granted, I wouldn't drink the one in the OP, but it's been around and there are some higher end ones.
I'm just not a big bourbon drinker, saw a $140 bottle just sitting willy nilly in the wild and wanted to ask.

This would be my choice for bourbon to stock at my house. It's dang good for the price. There are better bourbons and there are cheaper bourbons but I don't find any better at or below this price point. To me, they don't get significantly better until the cost almost doubles and that prices me out except for special occasions.

Look, I am slowly becoming a easy at the end of the day relax kinda drink with a cigar guy. I don't know much about Bourbon. Can someone point me to a smooth bourbon without a lot of the burn? I have been drinking mostly four roses.

For me, Elijah Craig is good.

For me it's Sazarac Rye for my old fashioneds, home made simple syrup and black walnut bitters. For me the orange peel and bada bing cherries are a must. For an added flavor, soak your cherries in brandy, I smoke the drink occasionally as well. Every day bourbon is Buffalo Trace at $35 or Woodford Reserve from Costco. Eagle Rare is probably my favorite middle of the road bourbon, either neat or a block. Bourbons are getting more readily available as younger generations don't drink at the rate that we do and distilleries have added capacity.

edited to add, if you like Rye's, Angels Envy makes a Rye that is top shelf, will run you just shy of $100. Drink it neat or with a drop of water to open it up

Wouldn't say I'm a big drinker. My worthless advice, sip it, don't drink it. Get a half ounce to an ounce and just enjoy it slowly. Try it neat, then with a tiny splash of water, then ice. Completely changes it each time. Then try pairing it with different foods,. I limit myself quite a bit on purpose but I like trying new things if something catches my eye. Picked up some Double Oak Chicken Cock last week for a great price and it's pretty dang good. I refuse to pay above about $120 for bourbon and even that's a reach.

1783 used to be my standard bourbon purchase.

It is a great example of what the bourbon craze did to the availability of great whiskey at great prices. It used to be a nice step up from Evan Williams standard colored labels. It had a 10 year age statement on it and I can clearly remember buying it for $12 a fifth and I’m pretty sure I paid under $10 about 20 or so years ago.

I strongly believe that barrels that would have gone into 1783 are now reserved for things like Henry McKenna 10 Year and others that start at $60 a bottle and head north.

I’m ready for the crash and bottles sitting on shelves for years again.

Buffalo Trace , makers mark, angels envy, whistle pig, wl weller. If I'm feeling like spending more snd I can find it blantons. If nothing else is an available above woodfood or wild turkey. Or I move over to the scotch.
In the summers though rather have a margarita.

Sounds like we could drink together, I keep a pitcher of margarita's in the fridge this time of year, all made from scratch. Hands down would much rather have a scotch vs. most bourbons, problem is most decent ones have gotten pricey compared to comparable bourbons. I would add Eagle Rare to your bourbon list. Cheers and Hail State!

Get a barrel proof Elijah Craig. It's probably the best tasting thing in the photos unless one of the Wellers is also a 107 Antique.

I was just watching this show called “Sugar” on Apple TV on my smart tv and during one part they spoke about Willet and it must’ve been a special small batch or even more than that as it cost around $100 a shot. So aparently they have some premium stuff. I’ll be damned if I ever pay $100 per shot or even close but my point is the timing couldn’t have been closer to when I posted on here originally. Wow

Willett’s a pretty small producer and they put out quite a few different single barrel bottles with long aging, so the prices can get up there on rarity alone.

The pot still bottle is kinda what they’re widely known for, but bourbon snobs I know aren’t into that one. More into their more rare ryes, etc.

Btw, I just looked back at the original post and realized that Willett pot still bottle is a 1.75L, which I’ve never actually seen in the wild.

That price is not ridiculous for that big bottle.

Most likely the Willet was the Purple Top for that price

Generally, a bottle is paid for after 3 shots at most places, so you're getting killed with those.

Yup.

For anybody interested, this is the whiskey list of one of the best whiskey bars in the world in DC. They have a ridiculous list of selections going back decades and they sell most all of it by the shot. This seems like a great business model in a town with stupid levels of government funny money…
