Jackie suffering from anemia, is weak, and may have been exposed to some type of poison or lead.
On the bright side, she's being well cared for.

Bad news today. After getting the best of care and showing some signs of improvement, today it was announced that Jackie's red blood cell count had dropped back down. And they still have no idea what's causing the anemia.
Hard to be very optimistic in this situation.

One thing we can feel good about: is that Jackie is getting the best of care and that should give us hope that her health will improve enough to be released back in the wild and be reunited with Shadow.

Previously, they had made everybody nervous by announcing that her red blood cell count had dropped...after some earlier improvement... to 13%. Tonight they announced that it had dropped even lower to 10%. She's not improving. It doesn't leave much room for optimism.

A great loss and a story worth telling
>Long before she became an online celebrity, Jackie was believed to be the first documented bald eagle hatched in Big Bear Valley, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.<

A lot of people...including some teachers and their whole classrooms...have followed her for years.
Tough night.

RIP Jackie and it looks like Shadow might have a new mate
after doing a google search on him , I found:

>Following the death of his longtime mate Jackie on August 10, 2026, bald eagle Shadow has been spotted visiting the famous Big Bear nest alongside a new 4.5-year-old female eagle known as KD1. Wildlife observers noted that KD1 first visited the nest just hours after Jackie's passing was announced, and Shadow returned to the nest shortly after to spend time with the new visitor.

Nest Activity and New Interactions
    • KD1's arrival: A young female eagle, designated KD1, appeared at the nest on August 10.
    • Shadow's return: Shadow returned to the nest shortly after the encounter, with KD1 following close behind.
    • Spent time together: The two eagles spent several minutes interacting at the nest before flying off.

What This Means for Shadow
  • Natural behavior: According to wildlife officials, it is common and normal for a surviving bald eagle to seek a new partner shortly after losing a mate.
  • Uncertain future: Organizations like the Friends of Big Bear Valley note that while a new bond may be forming, it is too early to confirm if KD1 will become Shadow's permanent new mate for future breeding seasons.

There is no confirmation that KD1 is female. Only speculation due to size, behavior, and vocalizations. The eagle is tagged but the sex was not confirmed when tagged. We shall see.
