Here is my annual breakdown of the upcoming U20 worlds. It’s my very favorite tournament of the year and it should be incredible with the USA, Iran, Russia, and Japan all sending tough teams. It will take me a bit to post every weight but I’ll have it done before the tournament starts

I hope everyone enjoys this thread and that it helps come tournament time. A lot of the names blur together for me looking at the brackets so it’s always helped me to go back and have this as a resource

There are a ton of US kids representing other countries and I’ll try to include them in my weight class breakdowns. I’m sure I’ll miss some so let me know and I’ll try to add them in

Enjoy!

Pretty weak weight overall. Not a ton of depth at all but some good high level talent. I’m not sure if Ozdamirov will be the Russian rep but he did win this tournament last year and Euros this year. Rashidov has won at every level he’s competed at. Ogawa is the guy I’m most interested in. Not many results but the ones he has are elite. Iran has 2 guys listed but whoever ends up going can compete for a medal. I think Cortez is very good but not great. I like his chances to medal but don’t see him getting on the top of the podium

Predictions-

Gold-Yamato Ogawa-JPN
Silver-Ulugbek Rashidov-UZB
Bronze-Magomed Ozdamirov-RUS
Bronze-Isaiah Cortez-USA

Edit-Flo has Magomed Magomedov as the Russian rep. He beat Ozdamirov at the Russian trials. I’ll still pick Magomedov to take bronze

The second straight weight without much depth but some good top level talent. I think Seidel is the favorite with Khateri and Assambek as his main challenger's. Abbasov can maybe get into the conversation as well. Bachmann is very good but I can’t see him putting together a complete tournament. Podium is definitely possible but I don’t see him on top. The wildcards are Yonashiro and Chaniev. Japan has been killing it at the lower weights at all the age levels and to make the team in Russia you have to be elite

65 kg is the complete opposite of the first 2 weights. Tons of depth but barely any truly top level talent. Bassett should cruise to a title. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t win this weight. The next group of guys is huge so the draw will be super important. I could see Tathashtikeh, Osedo, Isakov, Dimov, Brown, and Umarov all making a run and getting on the podium. Aloiev is a guy that can go far if he’s healthy. Morales is a US kid who wrestled his senior year at Lake Highland Prep. He’s had pretty good results. Last year many on this board said look out for Karson Brown. He didn’t end up having a great tournament but I think he can get on the podium. Predicting this weight after Bassett I might as well just pick names out of a hat.

70kg is the best weight so far. It has good depth and truly top end guys as well. I think Khalili is the favorite but Robideau can absolutely win it all. Khalili has been successful at every age level and has some monster wins lately. At Zagreb he beat Abhimanyou, Ian Parker, and Kemertelidze. He has split with Tumur Ochir in their last 2 matches. He also has an 8-2 win over Gaidarli who Duke beat in the U20 finals last year. He has to be considered the favorite going in. He is also Irans 70kg rep for senior worlds.

Robideau continues to get better every time out. He wrestled Zain tough and has looked good on the senior level. At U20’s he dominated. I expected Melvin to give him a tougher go but Robideau owns that series.

After those 2 it’s a pretty big group of guys fighting to get on the podium. Karimov won U20 euros while Bharaskar won U20 Asians. Tabaldiev and Altengerel have both competed a ton with pretty good results. They have been wrestling up at U23’s and seniors so should be well prepared for this level of competition. Seidakhmet and Bitzmurzaev are capable of going on a run and wrestling for a medal. Merov is an unknown but will undoubtedly be tough and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Matsubara surprise as well.

Like usual, 74kg is loaded with talent and depth. At the top is James, Wagin, Aghazada, and Seilbekov. Wagin has wrestled a ton and won at every level. He is super strong and physical and is a very good handfighter. Dynamic guys like Lockett and James give him trouble though. Seilbekov absolutely dominated at U23 and U20 Asians with his only close win coming against Mamivand. Aghazada is wrestling really well with dominant wins at euros and a super tight loss to Wagin. His only loss at U20 worlds last year was against Giadarli who Duke beat in the finals.

There is a large group of guys close behind that have good wins and some bad losses but should be fighting to get on the podium. Kazharov, Mamivand or Zarrinkam, Jumanazarov, Yoshida, and Uslu all have the talent to go on a run and be fighting for 3rd/5th. The draw is always important but in a weight with this much talent it will make or a break some of these guys

Alessio Perentin will be interesting to watch. He’s a top recruit who greyshirted last year and will be a freshman at Cornell this season. He beat James in folkstyle at the start of last season. I’m not picking him to place but he will be a tough out and I bet he beats some top level guys

I can’t say Jayden is next topic when he has guys like Wagin in his weight but I am confident in picking him to win gold. The levels he jumped this year are super impressive and he seems to get better every time out. Beating Lockett in 2 straight to make the team after his showing at WTT shows he is more than ready. Wagin will try to bully him if they meet but James is so slick and dynamic I see him picking Wagin apart. This is the weight I’m most excited to watch

Predictions-

Gold-Jayden James-USA
Silver-Manuel Wagin-GER
Bronze-Nurlan Aghazada-AZE
Bronze-Nurdaulet Seilbekov-KAZ

The US team is incredible in these first 5 weights. I have them going bronze, gold, gold, silver, gold. Things get much tougher now though. The upper weights are tough internationally and other than 86kg and maybe heavy we don’t have undeniable guys

Super weak weight overall but with 2 of the very best guys in the entire tournament in Khaniev and Gharehdaghi. Khaniev is the defending U20 champion but he has also improved massively in this past year. The run he is on in 2026 is very impressive. He won U23 euros, U20 euros, and the Ulaanbaatar open entirely by early termination. Just last week he won senior Russian nationals and will be their 79kg rep at worlds. He beat former world champion Usmanov on his way to the title. Khaniev is my favorite but Gharehdaghi can give him a challenge.

Gharehdaghi has shown continual improvement but has really jumped levels in the past year. His breakout moment was winning senior Asians this year where he beat Olympic champion Jamalov. He will be Japans 79kg rep at senior worlds. Khaniev vs Gharehdaghi could be the biggest potential match of U20’s

After those 2 there is a small group of guys competing to medal including Burton, Esmi, and Yadav. None of them have many results but all come from strong wrestling nations where you have to be good to make the team. Esmi beat Yadav in the U20 Asian finals as well. I keep going back and forth with Burton. I tend to place Americans too high in my predictions but I’ve also learned that the guys who have a year in a college room perform really well at this tournament (Stanich, Rademacher). This weight is pretty terrible so he should definitely be wrestling for a medal depending on his draw. I can’t see him beating Khaniev or Gharehdaghi but he should right there with anyone else.

One last guy to mention is Oleksiienko. He has wrestled a ton and at all age levels with some success. He won’t challenge the top guys but can get in the medal match. He was just 2nd at U20 euros losing only 3-2 in the finals to Alibakharchiev from Russia.

Predictions-

Gold-Ismial Khaniev-RUS
Silver-Keyvan Gharehdaghi-JPN
Bronze-Sobhan Esmi-IRI
Bronze-Ryan Burton-USA

I don't think I am as high on Ogawa as you, he is very good and could win this bracket but I don't put too much stock into him being JPN's Senior Team rep, as Sakamoto was the Senior rep last year and took 5th at u20s

Predictions-

Gold-Bo Bassett-USA
Silver-Zalimkhan Umarov-RUS
Bronze-Isa Isakov-KGZ
Bronze-Ali Tathashtikeh-IRI

Who do you think wins 57? I can definitely see Ozdamirov winning but I’m not even sure if he will be Russias rep. Rashidov can win it but he only beat Nagai 4-1 at Asians and Nagai was 4th at the Emperor’s cup that Ogawa won. I also think Ogawa is much better than Sakamoto. I’m not super confident in Ogawa winning but more confident than the others.

86kg is a really good weight with talent everywhere. There are 3 age level world champions competing. I have Shamsipour as the favorite with Sinclair, Begenjov, and Kostiuk close behind. Shamsipour is a past world champion and has been competing and competing well at seniors recently. He had a good showing at Zagreb where he beat last years 79kg world champion Kougioumtsidis while losing to Zahid and 2-2 to Gamkredlidze. He has shown he can compete with the best in the world at 86kg. Begenjov hasn’t been able to reach the top like he did in 2024 where he beat Ryder in the finals but he is always right there and is wrestling well right now. He just won U23 Asians, was 3rd at senior Asians, and 2nd at U20 Asians with his only loss coming to Shamsipour. He has the talent to put it together and turn that result around. Kostiuk doesn’t have the name recognition as the 2 guys above him but last year he won both U17 euros and worlds. This year he moved up to U20 and has had continued success. He was 3rd at U20 euros but his only loss was to Khaniev and he has moved down to 79kg for this tournament

Yepremyan is probably next in line. He has competed a ton with mixed results but has a ton of good wins and has been competing well this year. Abazada, Okazawa, Khajiyev, Lorincz, and Mukutov all have the talent to upset someone above them and fight for a medal

I really love Sinclair and think he can win this thing. The kid is fearless and loves to compete anywhere and against anyone. His matches in RAF drive this point home as he has faced Zahid, Olympic champion Ramazanov, and world bronze medalist Saipudinov who he beat. The only thing that gives me a little pause is his performance at U17 worlds. I really expected him to bring home a medal but he ended up going 1-1 and placing 8th. I expect him to have a great tournament and a potential match between him and Shamsipour would be one of my most anticipated.

Predictions-

Gold-Abolfazl Shamsipour-IRI
Silver-Aeoden Sinclair-US
Bronze-Alp Arslan Begenjov-TKM
Bronze-Artur Kostiuk-UKR

edit- Kostiuk has been replaced in the entries by Ibishov. With that change I have Yepremyan taking bronze

Super solid weight with high end talent and good depth. I have Rahmani and Togoev as the clear favorites with another 6 or so guys able to get on the podium. Rahmani has won at every level and has been mainly wrestling seniors of late. Last year he took 3rd after losing to McEnelly 5-5 on criteria in the semis. He took 6th at Zagreb this year but gave Hidlay a super competitive match only losing 12-9. Togoev doesn’t have near as many results as Rahmani but he has won both international tournaments he has entered. This year he teched everyone on his way to gold at U20 Euros.

There is a large group of guys behind those 2 who should compete for a medal. Bors is a past world finalist but his results haven’t been as good the past couple years. Myradov has competed at age level worlds 4 times and has finished as high as 4th. Lately he has been competing at seniors with decent results. He is wrestling well right now winning U20 Asians and placing 3rd at U23 Asians. Kurashvili is a past U17 world champion and is absolutely capable of bringing home a medal. Sas, Cetin, and Yergali all have good past results and recently placed high at Euros or Asians.

Mastny wrestled really well at the WTT and pan-ams. He is a high level recruit with another year of high school to go. I have a hard time seeing him put together the tournament he needs to too bring home a medal. 92kg is super deep with a bunch of past age level champions and medalists and I don’t think he’s quite on that level yet. This should be a great experience for him where he can get a feel for the foreign style which should benefit him going forward.

Sinclair is winning it.

I too have his U17 performance burned in my memory. It was an awful performance of doing nothing. But, apparently Askren had a pretty strong talk with him about being more active. And it's definitely shown. I thought he was going to struggle and just be ok at NCAAs. But he was far more offensive than I thought he was capable of.

I agree with you about Shamispour over Sinclair, I think Shamispour is just so hard to score on and that while Sinclair is dynamic and always going forward, the guys he can't beat are those who are able to keep it close and low scoring which I think Shamispour will do

With it being seemingly confirmed that it is Magomed Magomedov (almost no results) over Ozdramirov, I am going to put my faith in the unknown, because I think Odzamirov would have been the guy here, and Magomedov's results are solid and I trust his win to translate

Pretty solid weight overall. Petriashvili is a pretty big favorite and then there is a huge group that should compete for a medal. Petriashvili continues to get better and grow into his huge frame as well. He was super dominant at U20 euros. I see him as a big favorite and will be surprised if he loses. Dursunov has placed 3rd at both U17 and U20 worlds in the past and should be right there to do it again. Yang is a big wildcard for me. China doesn’t usually do very well at this tournament but he just won U20 Asians in fairly dominant fashion and has wins over multiple guys in this field. Noory and Sanakoev represent the powerhouse counties of Russia and Iran and have a decent shot to wrestle for a title

I’m super interested in watching Leibowitz. He has a cool story and seems to be improving at a good rate. He was runner up to world bronze Yoshida at both the Meiji and Emperor’s cup. Lacky has really good results on the international stage and can get on the podium

Boyle has probably been my toughest prediction. I keep going back and forth on where to place him. He is wrestling really really well right now. He went 12-0 at the US open and U20 trials with 11 techs and pins. His ceiling is super high and he keeps jumping levels. On the other side, at the upper weights it seems like the US guys either need some international experience or time in a college room before they perform well at this tournament. Boyle doesn’t have either of those things. He’s young and still has another year of high school. I’m hoping I’m wrong and he just comes out and performs at a high level and brings home a medal. I’m just not picking it though. 97kg is fairly deep with guys that have a ton of experience

I want to put Rupesh Rupesh as one to watch for here. India shocked us at 57kg u20s last year and if it is the same Rupesh, he went to cadet worlds before and took a bronze medalist (who nearly beat world champ Kenny) down to the wire. Also was a scrambly, funky, wrestler that can cause a lot of damage in the right matchup IMO

Really solid weight. 4 guys who have placed in the top 3 in previous age level worlds with 2 being champions. I have Nehad as the favorite. He has continued to get better each year and won U23 worlds last year while taking 2nd at U20’s. He’s a big dude who wrestles the Iranian style. Handfights hard and pushes everyone around the mat. Dursunov is right there with Nehad. He’s a past world champion as well and has placed at everything from U17’s to U23’s

Ronak is a guy who could knock off 1 of the above guys. He has been wrestling seniors lately and has placed as high as 2nd at worlds before. He was just second at U20 Asians but only lost to Nehad 3-0. Abramishvili and Darmaabazar have the talent to upset someone and wrestle for a medal

I’m super high on Ross along with everyone else. He is so athletic for a heavy and can look unbeatable when he is on. He has mixed results against big guys who control center and take ground like Nehad. I can see him winning this weight but I’m not picking it. He doesn’t have international experience which could figure in as well

Gold-Abolfazl Nehad-IRI
Silver-Dreshaun Ross-US
Bronze-Yusif Dursunov-AZE
Bronze-Ronak Ronak-IND

This US team is incredible but Iran is right there with them and Russia isnt far behind. I have the US with 8 medals. 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. Iran has 7 medals but 4 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze. I have Russia with 1 gold, 3 silver, and a bronze. The draw is so important in this tournament since there is no seeding. A bad draw in a couple weights can really swing the team results. 8 medals is a ton but I feel strongly about most of them. We are just a couple days away now and I can’t wait. This could go down as 1 of our best U20 teams ever. Tough to beat last years team with 8 medals and 5 golds though

My post brackets predictions for 61KG

Seidel has the toughest possible matchup rd 1. I kind of think he is the best guy here, and the timing of matchup doesn't change that for me. I have him taking this one and making it to finals after this. The other quarter is pretty week and I think Mendoza makes it from that side to the semis. Other side is tough to judge, but I have Assambek coming though. I think Bachmann goes over Chaniev, and faces semi loser Yonashiro for bronze. I would watch out for the Indian wrestler though, I think him and UZB could make runs.

Prediction:
Gold: Seidel
Silver: Assambek
Bronze: Khateri
Bronze: Yonashiro
5th: Mendoza
5th: Bachmann

At 86kg the final is in the quarters IMO, and I unfortunately lean towards the defense of Shamispour over the offense of Sinclair. Winner of this takes gold IMO. Sinclair's first matchup won't be a pushover though, he has to get through ARM or KAZ, two legit guys.

The other quad is much weaker, the Canadian is big for the weight, but nothing too impressive IMO, and the others outside of Georgia don't have much results to write home about. Japan's best results are losses to good guys, but that close match with Shamispour is enough to lead me to give him the edge to make that semi. I think India could be alright, but feel semi confident with my picks on the top side.

The third quad appears to be set for a Begenjov vs Abaszada matchup. Both are good but I favor the world champ to make the semis here.

The bottom quad has some solid guys, but I expect to see the Russian Mukutov come from there. Give me Mukutov over Begenjov in the semis, and Shamispour over Russia for gold.

Gold: Shamispour
Silver: Mukutov
Bronze: Sinclair
Bronze: Begenjov
5th: Scherrer
5th: Alimzhanov

When and what time does the freestyle guys wrestle ?

First group goes on Thursday at 4:00am
Seidel is 9 out on C so he probably won't go until at least 5am eastern and Sinclair is 20 out on C so at least after 6:15 am Eastern.

If one wants to watch the women, Brooks goes 3rd so probably 4:10 or 4:15.

Getting ahead with this one. This bracket is really hard to call. From the beginning there are tough matchups. Rd. 1 we see Dunia vs. Jowkar. Recently I would lean Dunia, but Jowkar's win over Khateri is as good as it gets.

The topside is stacked, but I have to take Magomedov over Elahi in the semis, with Rupesh in the quarters.

On the bottom side, I have Ismayilov over Rashidov in the quarters, and Ismayliv over Cortez in the semis.

Gold: Magomedov
Silver: Ismayilov
Bronze: Rupesh Rupesh
Bronze: Isiah Cortez
5th: Elahi
5th: Rashidov

Last of the day: 65 KG

I can't tell who India's rep is. There are 65kg Rohit's who are legit, if it is one of them then this bracket it interesting, unfortunately I can't tell.

Bo is my guy in this bracket, the rest is hard to shake out.

On the topside, I have Isakov over Brown in the top QTs and the other semi is weak, but give me K. Go.

On the bottom I have Bo making finals, from the top quarters, over Russia's Umarov in the semis.

Gold: Bo Bassett
Silver: Isakov
Bronze: K. Brown
Bronze: Umarov
5th: Rohit
5th: Askerbek
