Miami and Florida State to the BIG?

It's gonna happen eventually. The southeast is the last corner to conquer for a nationwide super conference.
Miami is actually a fairly selective academic private school. A lot of people don't realize that. Really not a bad add. And I'd take Florida State over the University of Florida hillbilly dirtballs any day.

Have to admit, I actually hate this. Understandably with TV ratings playing a role, a footprint into Florida is logical, but a conference from Oregon to South Florida, well, that's just not great.

I don’t see it happening. Then again, I don’t see as well as I used to.
What's the difference between Oregon to South Florida [a maybe] and Oregon to NJ [already done]?
With the college sports billed now being pushed back to Sept. for any vote wasn’t there language in there about max limit of 20 conf and realignment. Not sure if he would prevent this or make it less likely if it was passed.
We will get where the B10 and SEC are more like the AL/NL or AFC/NFC anyway where each league spreads coast to coast so might as well jump on those schools now instead of waiting for later.
An extra hour of flight time, I guess not that big of a deal. From an outsiders perspective, I guess being in the central time zone benefits for travel in that aspect as well.
If superconferences are inevitable, I would love to see them limited to football.
All other sports should revert to the traditional, smaller, regional conferences.
Also, if the B1G adds teams, I think you are still more likely to see AAU-member schools added, as every current B1G member is a part of the organization (except for Nebraska, which was voted out in 2011). So that means probably no Florida State. But Miami would be an option, as would someone like UNC.

Crazy how different the image is academically vs athletics. Also interesting that the B1G would add another private school.
The current bill if passed calls for the limit to be 19 schools. Not likely the B1G would add one school, but who the heck knows at this point.
Why 19? Seems like kind of an arbitrary number that makes no sense.
I believe on the B1G show they said that number was put in specifically to try to keep the B1G and SEC from expanding further. It was purposeful. One of the reasons neither has signed off on the bill..

FSU is also very selective academically. U.S. News ranks it as the 25th best public university. Sadly, Iowa has fallen off the face of the earth. Governors, legislators and regents have taken the shive to Iowa's universities. Thank God for Nebraska! Of the four, only Clemson may be down at our level acadenically.
But why 19? 20 is a nice round number that lends itself to balanced divisions.
Again as I said, this was evidently on purpose in the legislation. I have to assume they figured like you that they wouldn't want to do 19 teams so they made that the cutoff. It makes perfect sense if you take into account all the stupid bills our Congress puts out.
I wondered if the 19-team limit was done so that the B1G could add Notre Dame, if needed, but most other expansion would be blocked. I have no information to back this up.
There was some discussion about that on the B1G show as well if it was limited to 19 teams if that would be to bring ND in. but again the 19 team proposal was not from the B1G, (who is currently not supporting the legislation) it came from the committee in Congress.
I still believe that the B1G end game is a (4) 6 team division (24) team conference. I believe it'll look something like this:
Pacific Division (Washington, USC, Oregon, UCLA, Stanford, Cal)
Midwest (Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana)
Great Lakes (Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue, Ohio State, Notre Dame)
East (Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland, Miami (FL), Florida State, Virginia)
Pacific Division (Washington, USC, Oregon, UCLA, Stanford, Cal)
Midwest (Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana)

That's what I've never understood about this.
What revenue are these schools actually generating from being associated with those conferences for basketball and other sports that they wouldn't have already gotten from football to begin with?
I understand it's a boost to some of these smaller programs like SMU to be in the ACC for basketball, but what extra revenue are they getting solely from that avenue and is it worth the travel expenses? Same with all their smaller sports?
I have no idea why they couldn't do what some other small revenue sports do, and what a lot of G5 and other mid-majors/FCS level schools do being associated with different conferences for different sports.
And to a broader point in general, if we wanna go back and involve football, if the academics of the conference are afraid of losing Rutgers, then keep the university in the f***ing conference academically, and let them f*** off and reform the Big East where they belong.
Same goes for Maryland, and Oregon and the other Pac 10 schools.
If you want those research dollars then stay in the f***ing conference academically. That shouldn't need to be a joined-at-the-hip scenario with athletics. It's just small-minded narrow picture thinking that gets us in these f***ing problems in the first place.
Unless it's Notre Dame. And they want to hold out as an Independent until they're literally under water where nobody can hear their muffled cries for help............

I don’t think that would survive a legal challenge. Not sure how Congress has the authority to mandate a limit on the number of teams a conference can have.
Common sense should mandate the limit.............unfortunately they don't want to go that route.
They don't, which is why they would have to pass legislation, which will doesn't look likely.
Although, you can't play yourself, so it does make sense to have a round number of conference competitors.
Also, that would mean you could play half the conference every two years (9 on, 9 off) ...of course that would totally disrupt the rivalry games, so I guess that is a non-starter. Never mind...let's go back to 10 schools total.
It's a MAGA Congress that bows to a dictator and funds illegal wars but can find no money for health care, education, housing or anything else--unless it benefits billionaires. What the hell would you expect?

Isn’t there already a salary cap in college sports? Each school can only spend around $22 million.
Imo they try and stop the NIL or regulate it they are just setting themselves up for another loss in the courts.
