Jake went 3-5 tonight with a couple doubles in the Pirates win. Pirates have played 119 games and he has 371 plate appearances so he should now qualify for the statistical leader boards (3.1 plate appearances per game). His .300 average would be tied for 7th best in the National League. Awesome to see how well he has done considering some of us, myself included, weren't sure how well he would translate to the professional level

Does he have 371 plate appearances this season or career total?

371 this season. His at bats are lower than that but those don't count sacrifices, walks, and HBP
He only has 340 plate appearances this season, unfortunately. 308 at-bats. He’s at 2.85 PA/game right now. He really doesn’t have much of a shot at qualifying for the “individual championships” as MLB calls them, because of the stupid 3.1 rule. He’d need to play every single remainimg game nearly start to finish to qualify.

It’s such a stupid rule.

Well guess that's what I get for trusting the AI plate appearance number. Like you said, stupid rule. He is still doing great

He’s like 24 off right now. Batting leadoff helps. If he's in the lineup as much as he’s been lately, he’ll get it. First double tonight was close to a home run. He’s getting a lot more PA appearances per game lately than he did earlier in the year because he was a late sub in a lot of those

He has 340ish official plate appearances currently in 119 game & 370 is required to be listed among the leaders.

He has been playing every day for the last 6-8 weeks after platooning early in the year & doing a short stint on the injured reserve list. He will get enough at bats to qualify for the batting title if he continues to play every day for the remaining 6-8 weeks.

Cruz should come off the 60 day IL this week. I assume that will affect his playing time unfortunately

I think it probably will, but there are other injuries and performance issues right now to where I still this he’s playing nearly every day. It’ll be close. O’Hearn’s injury and Ozuna’s awfulness keep doors open. Valdez coming up and being good does impact it. Could see Cruz DHing some

It’s incredible to me how consistently terrible the free online AI answers are. I don’t trust it at all.

Cruz and O’Hearn coming back might hurt him, but they did release Ozuna, so they may see a lot of DH duties.

He’s playing really good ball. I think he’ll stay in the lineup a lot down the stretch and obviously leading off will help a ton with getting the needed PAs.

It certainly would be cool if he finished on a heater and came literally out of nowhere to win the NL batting title after not even showing up in the rankings until the last week of the season.

He has averaged 4.3 PA per game over the last 10 games. If he continued that pace for the rest of the season, and only missed 3-4 games, he could get there. Guess we’ll see.

Since I posted a feel good duck & dog buddy thread already today, it’s time to get back to my playa hata roots.

There were a few around these parts who were adamant that Jake wasn’t and would never be MLB material. I think a few of them are no longer around much, but I honestly can’t remember who they were.

Feel free to respond with some names or just out yourself here.

Yep. There were a lot of “he will get called up for a cup of coffee” and “he is nearly 70 years old (tic)” statements and they were VERY confident in their predictions.

I'm sorry to say that he just badly misplayed a ball hit to center and gave away a few extra bases. Other than that though, he's been awesome as a Pirate... Batting right at .300 on the season.

At his age and old school game that modern analytics hates, I didn’t think he’d ever get the chance. And really without those he should have been up a couple years earlier. I’m happy to be wrong.

edit, I never doubted he could play at this level if he did get a chance.

I sorta remember you having doubts he’d ever get the chance most of us knew he deserved.

I was like you. Doubted he’d get a shot, but felt sure he’d find a way to stick if he got the chance.

It would be so soul satisfying if he got hot for a couple of months and won a batting title.

Type of player a coach craves. Team player, fundamentals are so sound. He is a classic baseball player. I hope he is able to stay with organizations that value his talents over wanting long balls.

That does seem to be in the running for the dumbest sports rule out there. So somebody with fewer plate appearances could qualify because they only played full games when they played?

Mangum is a good bit off the highest average, but there’s an interesting exception to the 3.1 that I just read about. If he doesn’t hit 502 plate appearances on the year (min for 162 games) but he still would’ve won the title if he did have that many, he wins the title. For example, if Mangum was batting .350 at the end of the year with 500 plate appearances and the next closest person was batting .320, he’d still win because his average would be well over .320 even if he had two more at bats without a hit

The Tony Gwinn Rule. He led the league in hitting but was 4 plate appearances short of the minimum. But if he’d gone 0-4 would have still won the title. So he won the title.
