I don’t think your history is accurate. Sherman violated the constitution consistently destroying private property and forcing people to quarter his solders. As you know Lincoln’s stance was that the South was still part of the Union the entire time. Depends on your definition of racist as it relates to the historicity of the term or its modern usage. If it’s the latter, then yes. If it’s based on the 19th century concept of race to reinforce white hegemony and superiority, then no.

My son was in a baseball tournament that was supposed to be in North Carolina, but some of the games were actually held in South Carolina. I didn't go - the wife went with him on this one. The first day they had 2 games, both around Charlotte and everything was fairly normal. Pretty barren and boring, but normal. The second day they had to go to Winthrop, and play against a team that was mostly from South Carolina. Both my son and my wife reported back that it was certainly "different." They wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Team they were playing were good ole boys with a Southern twang and crosses on their unis. My son, never one to hold his tongue, asked one of the kids, when he got to 1B, "so, uh, are you guys super religious or something?" The kid said "most of us aren't, but our coaches are." Just a weird, creepy vibe to it all, and we had a very ... uh ... multicultural team ... so they were on alert. Nothing happened, other than we beat the crap out of that team and they ended up hitting, like, everyone on our team, but our squad was glad to hightail it out of there and get back to civilization.
