What years was IHSA football at its most competitive level? Is it now? Who were your top five players you liked to watch at that time? What teams made that time special?

Also speaking of Chicago teams, is this time in history the most interesting time of watching young talent in Chicago or was it another time?

Sox - Murakami
Cubs - PCA
Bears - Caleb Williams, Loveland
Bulls - Caleb Wilson
Hawks - Bedard

Others - Vargas, Montgomery

Not a clean sweep for all Chicago teams but 1984 was pretty good:
Cubs-Disappointing loss the Padres in the NLCS but the future looked bright with Davis, Durham, Sandberg, Dernier, Trout, Sutcliffe, and Smith all being 28 or under.
Bulls-MJ's rookie year.
Bears- Lost to the 49ers in the NFC title game but next season went 15-1 in the regular season and won the Super Bowl. Payton was the only offensive starter over 30 in '84. Hartenstine and Fencik were the only defensive starters over 30.

I'll preface by saying I'm being biased here, but for me IHSA football was at it's peak in the late 80's to the mid '90's. The shoulder pads were huge, there was only 6 classes, games weren't streamed so attendance was higher, and those were my childhood years growing up playing under the bleachers at Morris games.

6 classes helped to make IHSA football so much more competitive.

They should have never messed around with 6 classes like they did.

To me, the IHSA peak was reached before the ego-driven and unsportsmanlike behavior on the field starting filtering down to the HS level from the pro and college ranks. The IHSA officials (or those leading them) let the genie out of the bottle on the antics and it has diminished the playing, coaching and viewing experience in my view. Hard to name a year on this.

Yep, I think it is a combination of things, but the last 10-15 years have been brutal on interest, coverage, fan attendance, and general enjoyment of the game. That would leave the peak years at somewhere from mid 1980s to mid 2000s in my opinion.

That is when they found the sweet spot of playoff classes/qualifiers, players acted like kids and didn't emulate the NCAA/NFL game on celebrations and twitter, and most importantly the transfer portal wasn't always open.

Now college sports and high school sports all seem similar to the professional level, just without the superior athleticism and skill.

I used to avoid the NFL in favor of the college and HS game. Now I might as well watch the NFL.

In the mid to late 90s from a media perspective. Nothing like the Sunday spreads in the Sun-Times, Tribune and Southtown that came out before week one. Street and Smiths College and national high school preview in the magazine stand at the mall.

I think one simple answer sums up a lot of the reasons above- it was at its peak before social media/true Internet boom was engrained in culture. Peak was before that. Then after is when we saw negative affects on attendance, behavior, media, interest, etc. There are a lot of good that came with the social media era. But in my opinion, the negatives out weigh them.

80's, 90's, into the mid 2000's things were different. Suburban Public schools were favored to win most classes or at least legitimate Contenders....Rock Island knocked out MC in 1997 and then Woodstock beat them for State.....Yes MC was always a threat, along with JCA and Providence. Rita was consistent. Loyola had a couple good years in the early 90's but then were a decent at best team until the mid 2000's when Holecek turned it around....But Rice and Marist was below average and Laurence was flat out dormant. Marian Catholic had a couple pop up years but the field was very strong with Suburban Public Schools....WWS was the powerhouse, Richards!!! Huge Powerhouse!!! Maine South, Prospect, HF, Bolingbrook, Morris, Metamora, LWC with the Paus Brothers, Thorton, Palatine, and just many more......and you know what? The boundaries that many of you piss on the CCL were all the same as they are now, but all those schools still dominated year after year....

What really started changing things was the transfers. Back then it was an automatic sit for a year unless a legit move was made. Then loop holes were found many more followed, now it's a free for all.

As discussed the fan experience, outside of a couple games, is relatively weak.....remember "The Cube?" That started it....it was made and made NFHS streams look good but it started the trend...then social media. I used to have to wait until the morning after and get the paper to see is MC won if I missed a game 😂. Then in 1998 I came across the Tribune message boards on my AOL dial up....then a year later I stumbled on this site Edgy Tim 😂.

The game is still great, but the experience many of us had and were lucky enough to be apart of will never be what it was. Nothing Gold can Stay.....yeah I used The Outsiders reference....

Wow great to hear about all these older media outlets everyone brought up. I used them all and have brought up the Tim Weigel helicopter in the past traveling to the Friday night games.

Yes, BOOM definitely changed things
It may just be me aging, but it seems that the lesson of learning the value of team is being severely compromised as the emphasis on the perceived value of the individual takes precedent.

High School football was one of the last places where boys could learn that (IMHO) invaluable life lesson, be it the team's star or the scout team player giving his all to challenge and prepare the the first team players.

The shame is that most football careers end with the last High School game and of the small number that will go ahead to play in college, many will end their careers with eligibility remaining as so many other pressures and opportunities present more appeal as they transition to adult life.

The genie is out of the bottle for most programs.

Agree with all of this. Taking my spot for a Friday night game in the bleachers was the best 9-14 evenings of the year for much of my life. Started to become a little less enjoyable in the 2010's and the last 3-5 years has been even less so.

I hope something can be done to allow the IHSA (and even NCAA) to redevelop some teeth and make this a true amateur game again. Nothing wrong with being forced to sit a year on a transfer not involving a documented relocation. But I agree that the genie is probably out of the bottle. The NFL was always my least favorite version of football because of its theatrics and focus on the individual. But now that all three levels embrace that, I may as well watch the best athletes play if they are all acting and behaving the same.

Not sure you can get that genie back into the bottle, especially in NCAA.

Don't disagree with you guys but I think it just kinda "it is what it is" at this point.

When adults figured out how to monetize kids athletics, it screwed everything up, adults ruin everything.

How about the days of Pat Disabato and the late Jeff Ponczak from the south and southwest suburban local cable Coaches Corner Show along with their writings in the Tinley Park Star newspaper? A real couple of characters were they.

Attendance and new playoff system aside, I think IHSA football is in a pretty good in what is happening on the field. With ISU and U of I doing well we have seen a lot of kids stay local for college and even seen some small school kids get national attention.

The media coverage isn't what it was because it doesn't need to be what it was. Through social media you can find all the highlights and information for the teams you follow.

Pod casters like Edgy, View from the West, radio station in Springfield, and others are phenomenal for helping stay up to date on what is happening in those regions. Media organizations keep cutting HS sports coverage or just use AI to write the articles so it is up to individuals to do it and get a social media following. Hopefully we need more regional podders come about in the future.

We got some great teams, great programs, and great players. The IHSA is really the only major problem with IHSA football. It may not be what it was for some old timers but we still have football and it's still the best high school sport in the state.

I was very fond of his show ... he was also a great guy in person.
Plus, I miss "The Big Guy" He would plug his sponsors shamelessly. I loved it.
MC63-as someone with some experience, in your eyes, what was the golden era of high school football in Illinois?

I think Channel 1450 has the top media coverage of game highlights the day after the game in today's games.

The SHG and Rochester coverage by them is great.

Byron has great coverage too by their local tv station. (Scott Leber).

I will add Sloche, Offszn and Sports Broadcast Solutions are good.

late 1980s -- MC v SR in classic games at 63rd & Claremont and Gately. DeLaSalle and Leo still had good teams.

Correct. I will say 1996-99. This is when we had the first CCL/ESCC merger and 6 classes that were seeded 1-32 and everything wasn't digital yet. The Star had a great section to used to have lower level scores.

I should have included in this post the on-air Blazing Trojan stunt by the duo in illustrating the former Bloom Trail HS mascot. That created a buzz at the time.

Being the grump Boomer that I am I have to say the 80s-90s. Speaking purely as a small school coach, there were a lot of good competition in all sports. Yes there were teams (Divernon, Waverly, etc.) that were not good in football as in other sports but they competed and didnt roll over!~ Funny thing is Im not a fan of 8 man football BUT those schools, not competitive in 11 man or battling numbers are now competitive!

2009 - 2013 was a great time for IHSA football, especially in central Illinois. Some competitive conferences and really good football memories in jr. high and high school.

85 and 88 seasons were particularly memorable, though devastating losses both years for SR at 63rd & Claremont. 1985 East St. Louis team was all worldly.

Playing the 88, and probably the 85 game at The Pit probably hurt Rita those games. Had the games been at Gately, as that was also BRs home field in 85, the turf may have resulted in different outcomes. Rita's front 7 in 88 was lethal and most of those guys were back in 89 when Rita won at Gately.

88 was a great call by Lenti and staff, we couldn't budge on ground game. The option was useless in those conditions, so he saw 4 Rita DBs was soaking wet pants and heavy muddy shoes and figured our Receivers were faster then your DBs in muddy shoes so let's try passing....it worked, Miller passed more that game then he did all year......Wernet ran Sierra right through MC to start the game and then didn't go back to him or Gordon much...again would have liked to see that game on the turf as it may have been more traditional offenses for both.

Interesting points. Losing twice to Rice in 85 was puzzling; just could not score against them

Mid-late 90s into the early 00’s was the best.

I think there was more parity back then, especially concerning public vs private.
