If it keeps him far away from the football team I’m all for it. Maybe he’ll sit up in the booth like his hero Joe Pa and leave the in game decisions to the football coaches.
I am no fan of Joe Pa. I live in PA and have lived with obnoxious PSU fans since 1994. But it simply is not true that Joe Pa sat in the booth during games. He did let his assistants do most of the coaching. Did not wear a headset during games. But his success as a head coach speaks for itself. Yes, he was rightly fired in disgrace for his disgusting turning of a blind eye to Sandusky’s rapes. But the dude could coach. And if Rhule learned a few successful coaching habits from him then that is a good thing.

Yes, for most of his career he was on the sidelines, but towards the end around the 2000’s he started to. I don’t deny he was a good coach. Just making a comment in jest.

At least he had the sense to leave the radio gig when employed by the University. Can you imagine doing both? It would take a pretty pathetic dork to continue to do both.

Gus Felder. More great Rhule coaching lineage here?

Damon’s new role is one where a lot of coaches cut their teeth and launch into a great career. Some directors of player development move into college position coaching jobs, while others have gone into senior administration roles with an P4 athletic department.

Ours? Goes into high school coaching. Nice career trajectory for Felder: NFL to college to High School. Is Middle school next? Our player development is a major problem.

I am excited to see what Damon can do. I will not give him more or less hope because of his history with us, instead, I am just thankful we are shaking up a very weak part of our program and bringing someone in who appears to be knowledgeable and highly motivated.

So many of these moves are 3-4 years late. But glad we are seeing change

So torn on this one. Love me some DB and always wish him the best. So this promotion is great for him and I couldn't be happier for him.

That said him and Ravi used to get me through half my work day and I'm gonna truly miss that. Gonna have to figure something out for sure.

I actually like Ravi unlike many on here BUT when DB isn't there his other "guys" just don't do it for me. Outside of Ravi and DB Shane is the only guy I care for and he rarely speaks so I'm torn.

I'll give em a shot but I may have to find me another morning show if they just promote those kids from within. Just not enough substance for me when they are featured on the show.

Bobby Bowden gets that same stigma sometimes. Maybe older Bobby was more relaxed but younger Bobby absolutely was a great coach as well.

Dr Tom was one of the few who never pulled back as he aged. Probably because he was OC but I'm sure he let Charlie run his own ship as well.

I'm curious- how would you define player development as it relates to this role?

He just got a huge payraise and a tremendous benefit package with a better lifestyle. Good for him. It will be interesting to see who they get for his radio gig. I enjoyed his explanations of what happened post play.

Their position coach and HC are the ones primarily responsible for on the field development, while the Director (Damon's new role) is someone who can help with most the other issues of being college athletes at a P4 level.

I think these Directors act as a Trusted Advisor and are a crucial bridge between coaches and players. VERY important to be frank and honest with position coaches and the HC.

I think it's a key piece to the overall development of these kids and we see very little of it IMO. They can be mentors of the players, help with all sorts of life issues and connect it to football and the coaches. Great player development is not just "Hey, lift these weights and run faster."

If he went up into the booth late in his career it was probably so he could be close to a bathroom. I still remember the game he crapped his britches and had to leave the sideline and run to the locker room. 😂😂😂

DB does an incredible job announcing the state football playoffs. He does his homework and has fact based takes on those broadcasts - he knows his stuff. Will have to listen with no sound - the test of the announcers are weak-

Hey. Thats NOT funny. Happens to the best of us. Was it Larry the Cable Guy that said “never trust a fart if you’re over50” or was it Ron White?

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not familiar with Benning outside of his time on the football team. What do yall see in him that makes him a good/great hire?

Bowden was 80 and Paterno was 84 in their final years as head coach/

Dr Tom was only 60.

My thought was "Great, another Rhule sycophant". Damon bends over backwards to defend everything Matt the Hat does.
That is why they hired the football "smart guy" At least it will only be for a year or two. Damon Benning? Really? Another Rhule yes man. Now you know why this program will remain what it is. And why the clown coach will always be just that, until they can his ***. That will be soon. So Damon Benning? He uses big words. Know-it-all...Whatever. He did play for the Huskers, so that is a home run!!! And very typical of why this program is in the state that it is.

Would make sense and follow the trend

I expect to learn we didn’t interview anyone else, either
